Backing Up is Hard To Do

OKAY! So, no one guessed the number I was thinking of (211), but Roastsnail came the closest with 210! CONGRATULATIONS! And thanks everyone for trying! Hope you all have a great New Year!
Well at least no one got hurt.
Also really disappointed I didn’t win. Guess I can always just print out of copy of that one on my own and pretend I won I guess.
That’s both sad and a great way to handle failure.
LOLs XD I did a similar thing a long time ago.
I guess it IS less fake if you believe in it real really hard.
Now THAT’s the attitude of a Hope player!
Why is it that EVERY TIME I read the comments on this or any other webcomic, I get Homestucked?!
i thought i was being super clever with my 1924-marlon brando guess :( o well.
This is without a doubt the best written webcomic around. I read a number of them and enjoy them all (shoutout to Girl Genius and Spinnerette) but this webcomic is the one I find myself quoting or going over the good lines in my head, milking them for wisdom. As to the latest example “th’problem with project cars….” one of many pearls of wisdom scattered by this strip. The chance to see a macho, two-fisted character who is neither a jerk, a creep or and idiot is simply additional happy for me. Keep up the awesomeness!
XD I love how Kratos is all like I “probably” would’ve flipped my shit. There’s no probably about it! Also, I love how much taller he is than Wolverine and the Commander.
The GoW designers talk about him being proportionately drawn as though he’s nine feet tall or something like that in a making of documentary. That’s a little over-the-top and makes staging REALLY DIFFICULT, but I figure he can at least be seven-foot-something. (and really, I don’t think he’s SUPPOSED to be nine feet tall considering he seemed pretty average Spartan height when he went home in that one game)
Kratos really stands out on this particular page. Never noticed him being that big before. Logan looks so tiny next to him XD
Maybe game developers had “nine heads tall” in mind? That would be something around 7′, if I recall correctly.
Though have to ask about something else. What is a project car exactly?
A project car is some manner of older vehicle that you buy with the express intent of fixing up as a hobby. Some folks play sports, others draw, some even paint miniature soldiers and wargame. And then there are the gearheads …
It doesn’t necessarily have to be an old car, it could be any car. Although it does take considerably more work to turn a rusting junkyard squatter into a shining garage queen.
Yeah. I have a project car that I have been fixing up a few years now. It’s a Bradley GT. I started it with my father.
Keep in mind that Logan is a bit of a short guy compared to many others and what he lacks in height he makes up in rage, claws and muscles.
And hair.
Anyone can grow rage, claws, and muscle. Only real men can grow that kind of hair.
Haha, coincidentally right after posting my comment I noticed it popping up on my Tumblr dashboard:
http://art-and-sterf.tumblr.com/post/39466331999/grimchild-a-word-about-head-proportions
According to those measurments, Kratos would be around 8 heads/6’5” tall.
Nine feet? Bullshit, dear game designers XD Nobody sees him as THAT tall.
It could be proportional. Remember that before Hugh Jackman Logan was supposed to be a short man. If you assume something in the 5-5.5 foot range the Commander would be close to 6 foot and Kratos stands at a resonable and manly 6.5-7
Don’t you worry, I remember well how short regular comic book Wolverine is ;) Thought it was obvious enough, so didn’t need a mention.
It’s just comical to see fairly tall Commander being head shorter than Kratos and then Logan, over head shorter than Commander, looking like a dwarf next to Kratos.
If what you say is right Zaid, then I”M taller than Logan. Leme see. ughhhh I’m about 5’8” rough estimate… and most likely even Jared could throw me over his shoulder, okay? Now that’s pretty bad! I dont even have an eating disorder like alot of girls my age do…
Jared’s six feet tall, originally he and Commander were supposed to be the same height, but it made it difficult to frame commander next to all the 7’+ characters like Sten and Kratos so I bumped him up.
Oh God, Bayonetta. It seems I’m not the only one who thinks she’s an unsexy, elongated freak and the way she’s sexualized in game just makes it worse.
Well, Bayonetta is actually most of the time used in defense of PURPOSELY sexualized females (with Emma Frost used second to her), considering she was created that way and it’s all in-character.
It doesn’t excuse those weird-ass proportions, though. Seems like her character designers came from Liefeld’s school of female head-to-height ratio.
Her designers just have a very specific fetish that not many others share.
I always pictured him as a five-foot-six ball of Spartan rage myself.
To be fair, everyone is taller than wolverine. His canon height is supposed to be 5’3, an inch shorter than the average womans height in the U.S. Any normal sized dude will be way taller
The moment Jeremy receives a compliment everything goes sour. But at least the Commander has more work on his car he can do now.
Uh… you mean Jared?
The Captain never compliments Jeremy though, even when he trains his Polywhirl to use Bubblebeam
Dude, get the name right. It’s not “Jeremy” as both Jabba_the_bib and Kiapdx say, it’s Jared…
I mean come on people,get it right…
I think he wanted to mod a new ‘project car’. Liven things up a bit, Y’know?
The varied heights of the characters is a nice touch. This would make the commander just over 6 feet tall. Even if it is only drawn, still hate to see an old car damaged.
He’s supposed to be like 6’4″, Wolvie might just have cowboy boots or something like that on :P
Out of curiosity, what is the commander supposed to weight in at?
Like somewhere around 300lbs His physique is based on Brock Lesnar’s (who is billed around 270, but billed weights are usually lower than what the fighter would be outside of the weigh-in)
Yeah, they really should regulate all the weight cutting that goes on in boxing and MMA.
Nothing amuses me more than the blood on Wolverine’s shirt!
^Which makes him badass, mind you :D
Don’t dance until you’re in the end zone.
That is EXACTLY how my Pa described why it wasn’t such a big deal when I would wreck something he built. Love that.
I’m amazed you could even damage that thing. Thought the Commander would have that thing armor plated and framed with adamantium.
^Kinda impossible. Logan already annihilate all the Project X’s crew, so there’s no Adamantium available… Yet…
Going back in time to steal the Adamantium for the car doesn’t irreversibly screw Logan over. It can simply wind up back where it’s supposed to be through a series of self-fulfilling time-travel events, making it only kinda impossible.
^Ah, you mean Paradox? Indeed, it can happen.
Nah, he’d use one of the more workable alloys like unbelievium or unobtainium. Not sure if any of the pure elements — like bullshite or questionite — are malleable enough.
You got the naming conventions backwards.
-ium is for chemical elements. (platinum, uranium)
-ite is for minerals. (painite, stishovite)
His FACE in panel 4 was priceless!
Augh, I guessed 311. I should’ve went with a 2 instead. Haha, congrats Roastsnail! Happy New Years, guys!!
Thanks! Happy New Years to you as well!
KRATOS NO WE DO NOT CASUALLY SWEAR IN FRONT OF THE KIDS WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
Take a look few page back. Handsome Jack did say “HOLY SHIT!!”, & there’s Commander B’s cute little daughter, June! I’m getting a big suspicion that June doesn’t even know what those “bad words” are, because her DAD is just that kind of awesome person XDDDDD
Either that or the Commander just isn’t worried about people swearing in front of his kids. I imagine if you’re letting your kids hang out with Kratos, a few bad words is the least they’ll be exposed to.
Noooooo, my master plan failed… I was gonna go back and post 211
^Liar liar squarepants on fire :P
Just kidding.
Really love the Commander’s reaction and response. It shows a lot of his character.
I also love that you posted the results of the contest. I didnt win but its great to know I didnt win. I always wonder if the contest winner was ever decided.
You have no idea how happy I was to see Wolverine make an appearance! I hope he makes more appearances in the future, maybe with his own violent version of Canadian Guy, Sabretooth.
It’s really hilarious that Jared CAN drive forward, but reeaaally sucks at backward. & Commander… Wow! That’s the coolest, calmest reaction ever.
Anyone have any ideas why 211? The only thing I can think of is those information sites.
It was the number on the house I grew up in.
I grew up at 210. Maybe we were neighbors.
lol nice going kratos. its just jan 2nd n uve already made sure to win the award for understatement of the year
The Commander is a wise man.
And Jared is a hilarious pile of misery in the next-to-last panel.
Another great one. Thanks!
“Probably”?
Yeah, right…
Now that’s parenting at it’s finest, haha :)
I can’t figure out why there isn’t a whole in the wall.
A well-built brick wall, a low speed collision, and fairly thin sheet metal. The car body will crumple just like it did in the comic while doing barely any damage to the wall. Besides, it’s a ’57 Bel Air or something. He hit those wings against the wall before the bumper or anything with real structural integrity.
Man, have you ever laid hands on ANY car Detroit made in the 50s? The sheet metal is more like armor plate compared to what they slap on cars these days. But agreed, all he did was crumple the fins. Pull that bit out straight with a ratcheting cable and all shall be well.
The toughest guys are always hiding the biggest hearts
tyere was a report about a woman in newfoundland who ran into a moose on the road on her way to work. she arrived with th roof peeled back, thd windsheild in her lap, moose fur all over everything, and no memory of the crash. even 7 month later! jared is lucky he just crumpled the back…. but i bet he wishes there was no memory of it! plus, the moose incident is so manly@
Look at it this way. If Jared breaks it, then The Commander gets to fix it again.
Congrats to Roastsnail! :D
And thanks for running a christmas competition, Coelasquid :) :)
that tricky bitch!
Aah, Jared, yer a tragedy.
Love that last panel with the Commander’s pup holding a toy fish… er, it is a TOY fish right?
That’s his safety shark. He’s never in a panel without it.
This is why I love my backup camera. Trying to pull off a close-in maneuver in a F-150 is next to impossible otherwise. AND I can parallel park the thing with ease.
ahaa! An excuse to work on cars, Genius.
I love how the time-traveling, badass Commander is somehow still so down-to-earth. My kind of guy. :)
I just realized how the commander always combat parks his car. It makes so much sense, but how often do people think of that kind of thing? Nice attention to detail.
its more of a habit than you would realize, in my neighborhood i park front in, if im in a rough area, or in a strange area, i always back in, and its almost never done consciously, its just one of those things you do without realizing.
We always backed the car in at home. My mom’s in a wheelchair, so it made the back of the car more accessible to the ramp. I just instinctively think of cars as being backed into place now.
I started backing my car into parking spots a year or two ago, and I’ve found that it can make getting into a tight spot surprisingly easier than going forward. I’ve always had issues telling where my hood ends because of the way it slopes, so I always worry about hitting one of the cars on the sides, but if you’ve got your mirrors set up right then you can see where you are relative to both cars on either side. The only issue left is…illustrated very well here.
Which is a good thing since pulling out of a spot forward is MUCH safer than backing out.
Uh….why…why does the Commanders car look like Christine?
Hah. Love Jared in panel 7, in such a position of submission! It’s not often that the fact that Kanto’s in Japan rubs off on him, but it so does there!
YAY, you got wolverines size right XD
That…actually makes sense
I`m surprised that the Commander would even trust Jared with his kids, much less the car.
I mean what Jared is reliable only with kids and nothing else? It`s also kinda amazing that someone can park a gyarados in a cramped office and not park a car in an open space.
I call that Jared Logic.
It’s not that surprising. Some people are bad with things, but good with kids cause there’s a more real concious concern for their wellbeing. You can’t disappoint an Xbox afterall. Also, the Commander being cool isn’t that out of character, number one he’s never hurt Jared before, and number two, he’s probably had worse things done to him by just about everyone else he’s worked with on a daily basis because as careless as Jared is he never hurts people as much as the rest of the masculine brigade.
Jared is responsable for anouther living thing every day, Mr. Fish. He knows how to take care of things and be responsable for their health/safety/needs. Has Jared ever been irresponsable when it came to kids, Mr. Fish, Jonesy or anyone?
He trained mr. fish by bludgeoning, I guess that counts against him. and there was that time in the pokemon garden ;)
Jared actually handled that better than I would have, if I were in that situation. I think I’d be incoherent and sobbing behind the steering wheel had I done that to the Commander’s ride.
Am I the only one bothered by the Commander smoking a cigar and holding his kid? Although, with his genes they’re probably gonna grow up with a craving and tolerance for it anyway.
I don’t think it’s lit, it’s probably just there to look cool.
And that’s why the Commander is awesome. A note on height, Wolverine is supposed to be average, thing is that he usually hangs around taller than average heroes, and is often curved forward in his battle stance.
Comic book Wolverine is 5’3″
Am I the only one who noticed that there was no joke in this one?
There’s two, but they’re overshadowed by the heartwarming.
“I probably would’ve flipped my shit.”
“‘Probably?'”
And the visual one. Look at Jared’s face when he hears the CRNCH and lookit all the dialogue without punctuation. Then look at Jared once he’s out of the car anticipating the worst.
Both extremely funny, neither can compare to Commander badass using it as an excuse to work on his car.
Actually, I think he’s talking about giving the car to Jared. Also usually there is a joke at the end or a “punchline”
Is it just me, or does Jared vaguely remind anyone of Ben Paul from “The Walking Dead” video game?
I love Jared’s reaction shot oh-so-much. Thanks for making me smile.
211, huh? OK. Now if you don’t mind, I must excuse myself. I need to see some Libyans about some petroleum- I mean, ice cream.
lol good move commander. but i hope jarred’S got good muscle relaxant cuz he may have one hell of a whiplash in a few days/weeks
Wait, why is Wolverine so… Short…?
Because Wolverine is five foot three and Commander is six foot four. And Kratos is like seven foot whatever.
I think my actual favorite thing is how people like to just hang around the Commander and Jared, even after they have finished their business, to see how other things will turn out.
Want to work on a car but nothing needs to be done on it? Call a teen!
Reminds me of the time I had to call my dad to tell him I got in an accident. I was shaking and thought he was gonna kill me.
“Dad, I’m making a call I never thought I’d have to make…”
“Okay…”
“Iwreckedthecar! *wince*”
“Oh thank God! I thought you were going to say you’re pregnant!”
I literally fell over sideways onto the ground when he could care less about the car.
I’m noticing a distinct lack of airbags.
He slowly crunched a fin, if that sets off your airbags you’re driving a dangerous car.
Also doesnt help that cars of that model year don’t have airbags. I would be confused if one did pop out.
I would PAY to see an airbag pop out of a crunched fin. XD
That may be true if you´re quite wealthy, to get the best metal protection chemicles, grounding and coat of lacquer. For most people, a “project car” means nothing else than the never ending war against rust.
I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive Hugh Jackman for not shedding a few inches for the Xmen films. C’mon Hugh, they’re just forelegs – do you really need them?
he makes a good point about project cars
Wow. I didn’t know Kratos was that much taller than the Commander.
Maybe its just perspectives, but I always thought they were about the same height. But he’s almost a full head taller.
Weird.
Kratos is like nine heads tall, I always draw him as seven foot something. Commander is 6’4″. We already discussed this further up in the comments.
Band-aids on Wolverine? Isn’t that a little…well…superfluous? He’d be healed by the time you could stick them on him & you’d just get him mad at you for pulling the bandages (& a good chunk of hair) off again.
I think Sammy is my favorite character, and I’m not sure he has even said anything yet. There is just something so perfectly toddler-ish in the way you draw him with that shark, I love it.
My favorite part of this comic is how you drew Wolverine at his actual height. He’s a shorty. :D
And here I was just about how to make a comment about how flipping SHEESH, Commander and Kratos are tall, because they tower over Wolverine and Wolverine is not a diminutive man… But the only Wolverine I know is Hugh Jackman, so maybe Wolverine is short in the comics?
Still, my revelation about how freaking huge Kratos is stands, I guess…
Wolverine is supposed to be 5’2″ or 5’3″ in the comics.
Y’know, for a guy who was just mentioning the priority his children have over his car, it’s surprising he was fully prepared to see Jared get into a minor car accident with said children in the back seat.
slightly sloppy parking isn’t particularly life threatening.
Just when I thought the commander couldn’t get more… Yep, I like this guy.
It’s okay Jared. After all, everybody eventually learns that the best time to stop is when you hear a crunch…
