He just did it to be dramatic

I finally got a chance to beat the new Phoenix Wright, Love these guys, it feels like coming home. Also it was my birthday on Saturday, I’m 27 now.
Well then, Happy Birthday.
Ms. Squid:

And now you’re even older…
But not as old as me! My birthday’s tomorrow (the 23rd) and I’m going to be 31. Yowza.
Me too, girl. May 16th 1983 ^_^
Heh. May 15th here…1980. Ha! I’m older! lol
Now you just need to beat Professor Layton and his bumbling sidekick Phoenix Wright.
Assuming you haven’t.
Who said that?
^The butler did it.
That last case was easily one of the craziest, intense, and fun cases I had ever had the pleasure of playing. The reveals caught me off guard, which most of the cases are easy to just go, “Bad guy is clearly bad.” Love that game.
well then happy birthday Coela.
also I have yet to play at Phoenix right game so I don’t really get why all the fuss is about
The last case of Dual Destinies has Wright and Edgeworth facing off, as they did in AA1 and the last case of Justice for All. There’s a cutscene right as the trial starts, where Edgeworth takes off his spectacles in a dramatic way. (He goes through the whole trial not wearing them, even though he’s always wearing them outside the courtroom.)
It’s just poking fun at Edgeworth needing (or not needing) glasses. And this comic’s humorous take on it certainly made me smile. The joke is pretty simple; there’s not much hidden meaning behind it – which is good, as jokes that are easy to understand are the most well-received.
And on that note, happy birthday Coela! May you continue to live life as you always do – exhilarating, manly, and always finding ways to make people smile.
Well… I need tp play these games at some point. They are showing up enough here to make me want to play them to get in on the joke.
Happy birthday for Saturday. We are the same age and share a birthday. What are the odds?
Well, it’s the internet, so probably about 1:1.
1:365ish?
Greater than that. You have about a 1 in 365 chance of sharing a birthday with a given person (give or take, depending on the season and whether you were born on February 29th), but to determine the likelihood of being born on the same day in the same year as a random person, I think you’d have to divide the number of people born on that day by the number of people living today. But even that doesn’t account for how many people born on that day are still alive. If you’re 117 years old, the odds of meeting someone born on the same day as you may be nonexistent, irrespective of how many people were born on that day.
I still think that nothing really beats the most badass of all prosecutors beating his head against the wall when you beat him.
Or when another prosecutor beats you unconscious in the middle of the courtroom and no one gets mad at her.
Or calling an animal to the stand as a witness not once, but twice.
Just what is the Justice System like in the future that this is all viable in court?
Hey, at least he started the session with STYLE! That’s what really matters here, right? It’s honestly been a while since I played a Phoenix Wright game. I should probably get on that at some point.
Also happy birthday, Coela.
…dramatically removing your glasses leaves you unable to see? That doesn’t make any sense! I suppose next you’re gonna tell us that pumping a shotgun to intimidate punks does something like eject an unused shell?
Well if it’s anything like walking away from an explosion, it’s stupid but totally worth it for style points.
In real life, believe it or not, most of the time you DON’T have to fire a shotgun. Intimidation is key.
And then we invented the AA-12 because sometimes intimidation is silly.
And then we made shotgun shells that fire mini-bombs cause why not.
The AA-12 can in fact auto-fire mini-grenades from a 32-round drum magazine.
Happy birthday
It was also my birthday on a saturday however I’m 29 :(
Damn I want this game..! (Being broke suuuucks.) Congrats on the B-Day! Feeling as old as the lovely, squinty-eyed prosecution must be now?
Edgeworth is roughly 34, so Coel’s got another 7 to go.
I think in Phoenix Wright universe with their near-future timeline I’m forty.
(ARGH! I forgot about timeline differences!….but wait….isn’t there a flaw in Coelasquid’s logic…? …EUREKA!)
OBJECTION! That means from Murjana’s testimony and yours…by comparing the timelines, at this current moment in time, EDGEWORTH IS YOUNGER THAN YOU! Ergo, Murjana’s testimony is either a compliment or false on its own merits!
Happy B-day, Coelasquid ^_^
Heh… Dramatic effect? You all should’ve watch the live action adaptation version. It’s not a bad movie, but still you can watch it for the lols ^_^
I’ve been reading these for a few months now but this is the first time I’ve written anything and can I just say, Wow it’s amazing, it’s like every character ive ever wanted to see in one comic and its here! And you know how to handle them all as well :D
Wait. You have the same birthday as me (though you’re too years older than me)! Happy belated birthday!
A slightly belated Happy Birthday to you! Hopefully it was a good one.
happy (a bit late) birthday!
Happy belated birthday! :)
Dude, I turned 26 on Sunday. We’re practically twins woooo
Happy Belated Birthday, Squid! Had a heck of a weekend too, two birthdays on one day but parties split up on the two days.
Absolutely love how Edgeworth goes from sexy man to complete dork in 2 panels.
*Sight* Growing up in a legal family just means I can’t even watch someone play Ace Attorney without being pissed off at how fast and loose they are with legal procedure. You don’t deserve to wear that Atticus Finch inspired three-piece suit Phoenix Wright!
Not that I disagree, but that’s like martial artists complaining about Devil May Cry or RWBY being unrealistic.
Granted, I hear both those complaints regularly, so perhaps yours deserves a little more attention to pull even!
…I’m not sure where I was going with this.
The entire conceit of the story is that the court system has gotten so weird and shitty and clotted up that everything gets resolved in three-day-or-less flash trials. Like that’s like watching Iron man and being like “this is ridiculous, these jet propulsion exoskeletons are completely a work of fiction that isn’t a real thing!”
I’ve always found it a little odd that that very thing was directly explained in the 1st game (Phoenix only took 15 seconds or so to explain it, but it was there), though in every subsequent game it’s not mentioned or even handwaved to be taken for granted.
It was a little disappointing that the Jurist System thing (as seen in Apollo’s last case) isn’t seen or even mentioned in Dual Destinies. Not that I’m ragging on DD or anything (I love it and still do), but that quick of a time limit for trials isn’t really explained outside of AA1.
Funnily enough, the one time where it seemed to make the most sense (to me) was in AA5’s last trial (yes, the one the comic mentions) in which they only have 1 day to do it all in. Yes it’s prolonged a little, but you really felt like you were in a race against the clock there. …Oh, and AA2’s last trial as well. That one gave me goosebumps and I think I stayed up past midnight to finish it the first time around. So good.
I’m an engineer and all I think when watching Iron man is “FVCK!!, I need to become ludicrously rich ASAP!”. Also Happy Birthday girl, now imagine I smack your face against a cake at some point of the day
It’s based on the Japanese legal system, not the US system – the rules are different. Apollo’s entire game was about reforms the Japanese system were putting into place at the time.
It was my Birthday Saturday too! :D Stop making me feel old :(
Happy late birthday Coelasquid!
Jumping on the happy birthday train here, so:
Happy (Belated) Birthday, Coelasquid! Hope it was a good one, and many thanks for continuing to take the time to make this comic.
Have you given the new Ace Attorney Investigations 2 english fan translation a try yet? It finally came out last month or so, and I’d give it five stars for feeling just like the other official AA english translations.
It comes up as the second result on google for “AAI2 translation”, at least for my google bubble, on gbatemp.
Happy Birthday!!!
I haven’t played AA before so I don’t know if Edgeworth regularly wears glasses, but if so, then I feel his pain. No glasses for me is like permanent night blindness, except without the night part.
He doesn’t wear glasses usually, but in Dual Destinies does, and when he faces off against Phoenix in the last trial he takes them off for maximum nostalgia value.
I see. Or do I? Anyway, thanks for the info.
Happy Birthday, Coelasquida
I can mostly see without them but it’s headache to do so.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
And OMG you’re so young!!
Happy Three To The Third Power Birthday!!
Wow, you and I have the same birthday. Love the comic and I hope you keep one of the few genuinely funny webcomics going.
Bah Birthday Bug
Happy birthday!
found your comic though giant and all i can say is THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER!!!!!!!! i haven’t laughed this hard in a good minute
Happy Birthday
Yeah, this trope made more sense when the glasses were reading glasses, and you put them on to read plot-critical-information, then took off your glasses at just the right moment to deliver a coup-de-grace badass statement, like “take him away” or “we’re done here” or something like that.
Because you don’t need your reading glasses to look the other guy in the eye and say “enjoy spending the rest of your life in prison”. In fact, they kinda get in the way.
Happy b-day :D mine was yesterday
Happy belated birthday. http://youtu.be/LxYXcvGBibc
Coelasquid, I just saw this kickstarter project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1021121631/the-running-man-game?ref=category
Is it just me or does their lead character look a little… familiar? By which I mean they’ve exactly stolen Commander’s likeness and just changed the colours.
I’m going to make the reasonable assumption that they didn’t bother to ask you for permission and are going to regret being born when you catch up with them?
(The project is also terrible for other reasons.)
PS I’m sorry this note was probably a terrible birthday present. :<
Omg the way you drew edgeworths face in the 4th panel….. is there any way to explain how funny it looks?
Also this is to edgey, get some contacts brother. glasses are soooooo 19…..something.
Oh my goodness I just caught up, took forever but enjoyed every strip some blimey good talent, also happy late birthday!
I just turned 27 tonight! 27 buddies~
