Dredd was the Game of Thrones series Finale, right?

12:00 am
Caught a midnight screening of the new Lollipop Chainsaw Judge Dredd movie with my friends for my birthday and it was great A+ ten stars would watch again. Might try to catch it in 3D before it’s out of theatres.
Who else saw Captain Falcon at first?
(yes, I know his design was based on Dredd’s design)
It took me until the close-up on the face to realize it wasn’t.
I bet you forgot the first movie (well, it’s an oldschool movie anyways). I already realized that IS Dredd.
Ah~ Good old days, when i played Judge Dredd with my Sega Mega Drive 16bit…
Jesus, is 1995 old school now? I’m getting old…
2002 was ten years ago now.
1992 was twenty years ago
It’s us. We’re the old ones now.
Now I feel old and depressed…
And yeah, it’s old school sin it had Stallone before doing the shitty movies that almost made him forget about him until the recent watchable ones.
Don’t feel bad, soon we get to wear diapers and poop where ever we want! Getting old is fun!
“We’re the old men, Ace.”
-Johnny Rico, Starship Troopers. Another old movie :)
Starship Troopers?
Don’t talk to me about Starship Troopers. I read the book, Heinlein is a master for a reason..
And then they announced the movie. I was looking forward to it.
Until I actually saw it. I was in a frothing rage as to how they BUTCHERED that story by the time the last reel ended.
While it has it’s problems, the movie is thematically very well executed in it’s own right as subtle commentary on war propaganda wrapped in an easily-accessible action flick. It’s similar to how Robocop used the guise of a campy cyborg flick to tell a thoughtful story. You would probably enjoy it a lot more if you weren’t clinging to the idea that it should be exactly like the book.
Pretty much this, it’s not exactly like the book, but it’s really well done in its own right!
I think I can forgive it for that. :>
Oh man, your vocabulary is that of a great poet. Many props for having enjoyable sentences. The way you string words together pleases my brain.
-college kid
I liked the movie and the book, although I criticise both.
I liked the book, although the idea of a limited democracy seems rather impractical, unless the citizens aren’t pretentious jerks; in that case could work.
I liked the movie, although I really wanted powered armor. Ironically the fact that they send an army of soap opera stars instead of highly-trained gorillas is one of the reasons I love the movie.
IIRC they really wanted to do the powered armor, but at the time the movie was made CG was still fantastically expensive, so they were forced to choose between having the armor and having the bugs.
I don’t know if they had the budget to try doing the armor as a practical suit-based effect, but given everything else on screen (space ships, which were practical models, sci-fi sets, etc) I kinda doubt that they did. I suspect it probably wouldn’t have looked up to snuff if they had tried.
…Though part of my brain is now having a giggle fit at the thought of CG aliens fighting stop-motion robots/powered armor in the same shot. That would be either look really awesome or really stupid, but kind of bizarrely brilliant either way.
The military needs to train their gorillas better. A poorly trained gorilla is not only a poor tactician, they will also raid a termite mound, build a nest to sleep in, or even groom eachother in the middle of an Op! Not to mention, a gorilla without proper training can be easily ambushed by a guerrilla raid.
I do not agree. Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers was a work of character assassination. The only good thing I have to say about it is the decision to make the Mobile Infantry a mixed force, and even there they ruined it by exploiting it for cheap T&A.
Sorry, did you just complain about something based off a Heinlein book being kinda racy? That’s practically a tribute in itself. I mean, have you read his later books? He’s called “the dirty old man of science fiction” for a reason.
Sadly, they’re/ve remade Robocop… I’m sure there’s going to be another political bite at the apple. It’s almost as sad as they remaking all the Swayze movies after his death. What’s next, Road House? They’ve already re-made Red Dawn but had to back-peddle at putting China as the main antagonists because they own us…
But there was some hot beefcake. Even some hot bondage whipping discipline action beefcake!! :)
… okay, that was pretty much what I remember liking about the movie.
Well, that’s true too.
I always saw the movie as a sort of parody of the book.
Hahahaaaaah…. Ken & Barbie are going to war.
Another movie adapation down the drain…
subtle Homestuck reference, methinks?
I thought SBaHJ was where that one originated. “You’re the [X]. It is you.”
the doodlebob episode of spongebob is ten years old now
17 years is the “Nostalgia Magic Number,” so Judge Dredd is right on time.
You guys may be getting old, but this is proof your legacy, and the legacy of what you love will live on forever. So long as we keep beating dead horses. I’m looking at you, George Lucas.
When I hear someone say “ten years ago” I still think of the 90’s.
not abou tbein gold, it’s abou tacting old. in my mid 20’s and i game harder than when i was a kid. XP
it’s also about knowing how to use a keyboard properly… >.>
He could be using whiskey correctly. Asshole.
Did you just curse at someone for correcting their own grammar mistakes? That tears it, I’ll never understand people.
You misspelled whisky…HTH.
Actually, it is you who have misspelled whiskey in your passive-aggressive fervor.
HTH
Whisky and Whiskey are both correct spellings. One is American whiskey, and the other is Canadian whisky. Fuck spell check.
I prefer to spell it “Scotch”… ;-)
Whisky is Scottish, Whiskey is Irish. Don’t be uneducated. Don’t be like how the rest of the world sees ‘Murica.
If we’re going balls-out pedantic, it’s actually uisge to the old Scots. Uisge beatha, meaning “water of life.” And I would hardly call the T&A in Starship Troopers cheap. The actresses who bared all were well-compensated for it, I assure you.
I thought you meant he now games harder because he uses the keyboard properly? As opposed to when he was a kid and lacked the fine finger-eye coordination he enjoys today?
Mid-20’s? toriasindon, you’re still a kid.
The moment I saw the last panel,I saw lollipop chainsaw influence…AWESOME! :D
Now where’s that damn vampire…
Very good gore shots. I especially liked the first, fifth, and sixth
You have every right to be super proud of this.
And I didn’t even twig that there were sparkly bits. Just figured they’d got diamonds in them they stole and Dredd shot them out. Like a BAMF.
That made me laugh more than it’s humanly possible. Well done!
Awesome as always, Squid ^_^
But… Wut about the previous entry? I want to see it in color too, please?
Please? Pretty please? With the sugar & strawberry sauce on the top? ^O^
I want to see it too XD please?
I saw this with my mom expecting it to be fairly graphic, but by the end of the movie(more like after the first 12 minutes) I felt like a failure as a son. There was so much glittery slow motion face shooting that I could see my mom cringing in her seat.
But all in all it was a great movie.
……Why would you carry your mom to see something like Dredd?
(Unless she was like my mom who enjoyed Die Hards and Rambos, but mine was more the exception rather than the rule).
Moms are unique creatures. Mine enjoyed beat-em-ups and swordplay, no matter how bloody they were. Not so much gun action movies.
Mine likes giant robots and explosions, and also horses.
Needless to say, the whole family enjoyed the Transformers movies for reasons other than the butchered plotline.
aaaaand scarred for life.
There’s a new judge Dredd movie? is it like the comics? is it awesome serious and gritty, it’s not like the old Dredd movie is it? pleease I need to know more
Here’s what you need to know.
He never takes off his helmet.
HEY! That would be a bad spoiler!
Go see it. It may not be the art-deco skyline of Mega-City-One you remember, but it’s definitely Mega-City-One, it’s definitely a block riot, and it’s definitely Dredd.
Judge Dredd is serious and gritty? Uh, I think you missed that the comics were (and are) satirical, friendo.
Yes, but they were/are satirical in the same way that Warhammer 40k is/was a parody: it’s still a brutal, grim setting beneath all the jokes.
The Dredd comic isn’t serious and gritty, it’s more like the sci-fi comic cousin of Discworld. It uses a lot of humor and parody. The 1995 Stallone version was given an unfair rep but it’s more faithful to the comic than people realize. Sure Dredd removes his helmet and kisses Hershey, and I didn’t like the plot, but the scenery and effects were fantastic and really captured the soul of Megacity 1. Rob Shneider was also pretty well cast, in the comics Dredd has been teamed up with a lot of similar “wacky” characters.
See it and take as many people as you can convince to go with you. It needs the money, sadly…
I WANT A SEQUEL WITH JUDGE HERSHEY AND/OR DEATH, AND MONIES ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS TO BE A POSSIBLITY.
also, other 2000AD movies. I’d love love love to see a Sláine movie.
Apparently they’re already working on a DREDD sequel. So, more good news. :D
What. The. Hell. Is going on here?
Me when I first heard a Dredd remake was coming – :(
Me after I read the initial reviews – o_O
Me after I actually saw it – @.@
Never has a film been so thoroughly redeemed.
Criminals taste my Lawbringer death!
Ahaha, I need to finish playing LC, thanks for reminding me.
Glorious.
5th and 6 panels: Dredd kills something by scowling at it.
Well, this made my Tuesday.
Had the misfortune of being in the middle of downing some store brand soda when I saw the Lolipop Chainsaw blurb. Just finished wiping down the monitor…
in all honesty i at first thought the joke was in relation to the team fortress pyro video
I’m strting to think you’re going out of your way to make jokes I don’t get. Good artwork none the less, and I’m sure if I ever played lollipop chainsaw or read any judge dredd, i’d be laughing my ass off.
ok, he killed 6 criminals, so what were the other 36 kills?
36 Golden Zombie Tokens. Or in this case, criminal tokens. The grey ones are platinum. It is from Lollipop Chainsaw. Hence why the first thing that came to mind in my head was a zombie hunting cheerleader saying “pop it!” after I saw the last panel.
Hey, I’ve never wrote a comment here, but today I made a decision to tell you MGDMT rocks! I just love how you carry out the faces gestures, the postures, the body language! Did you draw inspiration on expressionism, or maybe some expressionist films?
Coelasquid you’ve done an amazing job, I hope you have success on professional animation!
PS: Are you OK? Have you got better from the accident?
man this movie was great. Plot was sub standard, if not bland and over done, but its judge dredd who’s gonna argue it? Here’s to hoping for more. Same on the 3D too, gonna be awesome to watch those bullets flying in 3D!!
Dredd was pretty good. Far better than that god awful 90’s version. Shame that with the numbers it has right now, we won’t be seeing a sequel.
“better than that god awful 90’s version” isn’t exactly an incredibly tall hurdle to clear… :P
But still, we have the 90’s version to thank for some lovely one-liners.
I think we have that entire decade to thank for great one-liners. Still, the current Dredd was far less… compromising than the original film (character-wise).
what the hells wrong with the 90s dredd?!
Well… only… EVERYTHING!!!
That’s an understatement.
Yeah. It goes past bad, and then on past “so bad it’s good”, and then finds it home as “don’t let this happen to you”.
Glad the movie was good and that it’s sparkle season.
LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW :D
Hey. Happy birthday.
The 3D print is AMAZING. If you have the option of seeing it in that format, you totally should.
I AM THE LAW!!!
No man, you’ve got to say it like you’ve got mud on your tongue and you don’t want to drop it into you mouth. More like “AHH Y’AM DA LAAAAW”. Practice grunting that with your tongue held low in your jaw and you’ll be slurrin’ like Sly in no time.
Should I also only talk with one side of my mouth shut?
Be fair, he can’t help that.
Falcon and Dredd i know but i’ve never seen Game of thrones and really have no plans to see it any time soon
Then you’re missing out, Game of Thrones is awesome. (I mean, as long as you don’t mind lots of violence, rape and incest… but also, dragons!)
This is basically the best. Of anything. Ever.
The punchline is THE LAW!!!!!!!!
You’ve watched it already and it’s great? YAY! So much looking forward to see it then :)
Awesome last panel, hrhr
Saw it in 3d. It was great. Would recommend it to anyone else.
Still hankering for a slice from Cursed Earth Pizza, man …
So first we had the lawyer, now we have the judge—-this is building up to be the best courtroom scene *ever*.
Wait, haven’t we seen Sylvester Stallone around the office before? Is… is he a different person than Judge Dredd?
Go to the theater, watch Dredd 3D, then tell us who the real Dredd is. (Hint: Not Stallone.)
Dude, Stallone is totally Dredd. I don’t know what kind of stuff you’ve been swigging (possibly rubbing acholol? I’ve heard it can cause blindness) but yeah. The new guy couldn’t hold a candle too Stallone, I mean, he should’ve won a friggin’ oscar for that amazing piece of film. I mean, the new guy didn’t really act at all, so, Stallone’s obviously the real dredd.
*Sings quietly to self* “Do you believe in magic, in a young girl’s heart…” XD
I did miss your M-shaped angry mouth.
Fuck yeah Dredd. As a die-hard 2000AD fan, you have no idea how happy this makes me. Now, if only Sláine would be turned into a movie.
Also, THE LAW. fact.
I will also mention that I love that a smile to Dredd is really just his mouth frowning slightly less, to a “Not-Bad-Obama” face.
I liked Judge Dredd, but of my friend I went with, they each progressively disliked the movie more than the last. I’m not really sure what they were expecting, or if they even anything about the source material, so I can only make assumptions as to why they didn’t like it or wanted to see it.
Funny comic!
Too many people here talking about Judge Dredd and not about how dreadful Lollipop Chainsaw was.
I may have played worse games, but never one that I paid $60 for.
Well worth watching in 3D, the Slo-Mo scenes are phenomenal.
The uniform and helmet designs are from the comic, but the Lawgiver is the Stallone movie version. What unholy abomination is this?
Because someone made a papercraft version of the Stallone gun that was well-documented from all angles and made easy reference.
I didn’t like the helmet in the 1995 version, there was no nose protector.
At first I thought it would be lame.
Then, Karl Urban was roled on it, and he said the helmet wouldn’t be taken off. I got interested.
Then, I watched “The Raid, Redemption”, and soon saw the trailer for Dredd. the script is THE SAME, same plotline, same shots, same pace, different subplots. But it’s martial arts instead of guns.
Then I watched the movie. Everything confirmed. Dredd has practically a carbon copy of The Raid’s script.
But it’s a godawesome movie on it’s own right. I never have seen two movies who could be so similar, yet so distant, and both awesome.
Oh, i forgot to mention, “The Raid Redemption” is an indonesian martial arts movie about -normal- cops in a… duh, Raid inside an apartment block in a poor part of the town. There is a spoof of it’s script in “The-Editing-Room”.
Except for how Dredd started filming before they even began making The Raid…
It’s coincidence, they started production of Dredd before The Raid was even given the green light. It’s sad that everyone will be accusing Dredd of ripping off The Raid when the two have nothing to do with each other. Both are excellent movies and deserve to stand on their own merits.
I know you’re a fan, cause you drew him in the old outfit.
-kat
So… I’m getting a little bit of a mixed message here, but you’re giving a “Yay” to Chainsaw Lollipop, right?
Well regardless, I played the demo and I thought it was silly good fun.
I don’t get why Chainsaw and Judge are getting connected here. I am sure a huge determining factor is the fact that I haven’t see the movie…
Until a little while ago, I had only ever seen the one where Jared gets Mr. Fish to evolve… So I found the source… and just read all the comics start to finish.
Fuck painting my deck railing.
Is… is that good?
Man the Lawgiver was such a cheap way to farm platinum coins.
This. This exactly. And there was a family with 3 children under the age of 8ish sitting directly behind us in the theater. WHAT PART OF THE TRAILER MADE YOU THINK THIS WAS AN APPROPRIATE MOVIE FOR YOUR KIDDIES???
It was amazing and sparkly nonetheless.
It doesn’t help that I heard “Mickey” in my head while reading this.
FALCON PUNCH!!
Funny strip, I’d like to see more Dredd in this comic as he’s gotta be my favorite fictional character. Wasn’t able to find any Dredd merchandise at last year’s comiccon, but I bet I will next year!
It’s funny how he looks more like Captain Falcon than Dredd. You need to work on that, colesquid.
Man that movie was son damn good. I want more like it.
Was wondering when Dredd would feature… ridiculously macho as he is.
For some reason, panel 2 kind of disturbed me. Leaving the guy’s tongue intact like that. The way it’s curled up, it makes me think of the sensation you might get when you first find a new tooth-cavity…
