This is a really weak joke, I apologize. Kain was one of the first characters people said they wanted me to draw, and the only thing I could remember about him was that he dies if he stops killing people for too long. Originally there was a completely different joke here and the other guy was Kratos, but I decided the joke was bad and I use Kratos too much so I polled the folks watching my Twitter and they decided they wanted a Borderlands comic. Then I rewrote the punchline and Mr. Sparta got swapped out for Brick at the last minute.
I’m also going to take a moment to apologize to the people I tricked into thinking this was a video game comic, because it’s really just a comic about whatever absurdly macho thing I felt like making fun of while I was sitting down and staring at photoshop. This is my way of saying that the next few weeks are going to have nothing at all to do with video games and you don’t need to send me letters asking what happened to all the video game jokes. But there will be a new character next week and Jared’ll be back again soon so… hopefully we’ll still all have a good time?
Awesome! I’m actually stoked to hear that we’ll be seeing some non-VG macho men running around. There are so many jokes beyond the realm of video games. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
I am not at all opposed to non-video game comics. I love your art style and your style of jokes regardless.
When I first saw Kain walk through the door, I thought he was Thailog from Gargoyles at first. :x
Never mind the fact that he was too lightly-colored and wingless to be Thailog.
So did I! I haven’t even watched that much Gargoyles.
Honestly, i didn’t reconize Brick without his gloves. But all in all, I love this comic. Keep it up.
Noice.
I might also include “And they don’t seem to realize that normal life doesn’t operate like their previous ‘occupations'”
True, they have to figure out that real life isn’t as cool.
Actually i was thinking more along the lines of, “there are no drop items(er,.. sorta)”, “You can’t just beat the crap out of random people”, and “no one hides their rubies in their pots”
You’re kidding, right?
Every time I’ve gotten in a fight to the death, the other guy has exploded into a fountain of change.
You, good sir, have made my day.
Awww, for a teeny-tiny second, I thought Kain was Thailog! That would have been exciting, but both are good!
Kain in a polo shirt-n-uniform made me lose so hard! So awesome <3
Great work with your comics so far, funny and well drawn, i can just feel a brofist\sawfist with Jack from Mad World and Ash from Evil Dead coming up at some point. Or at least i really hope so lol.
I feel terrible…but I have no idea who Brick is. :s
Check out the video game Borderlands. He is known as the “Tank” ingame. The game is based on constant item drops, and there are literally about 100,000 guns in the game. The item drops are free for all and you must beat people to them.
In “Borderlands,” Brick beats people to death with his bare fists, and resurrects himself by … uh … killing anything in his immediate vicinity. That’s pretty much his job description in the game.
I don’t even know who half the characters referenced in this comic are and I’m still completely addicted. Love it.
Pretty sweet page this week, it’s also nice to see that it will lend itself to stuff outside of Video Games. And I’m just going to randomly throw this out there; why not do something involving either The A-Team or just B.A.? I’m just saying that it could be quite funny.
I love the hysterical looks on their faces in panels 7 and 8. And the way commander looks so calm when dealing with two mach psychos covered in blood.
It made me lawl
Hey, no problem. The comic is still amazing regardless. I can’t wait until next Monday.
What’s with his accent?
He is from the future, and some sort of kooky location within that future.
OR something.
If anything, science should be a good answer to your question.
Imagine you’re reading all his lines with Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice voice.
I coulda sworn it was Betelgeuse. But that’s too German, I guess.
Betelgeuse is the star, Beetlejuice is grody dead Michael Keaton in a suit made of referee shirts.
lol i love that movie
In the movie the spelling of his name is Betelgeuse.
I dunno what version you were watching, but it’s Beetlejuice in all of the ones that I’ve seen.
I have no clue how to make the links red words so Imagine that “the one with Micheal Keaton.” was linked to >http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UICgA-P67Zw
They may spell it like that in his newspaper ad, but the title of the movie is still “Beetlejuice” and it’s what they bill the character as on IMDB. I dunno, it’s back and forth, but it’s not out of line calling him Beetlejuice. Seriously, directly on the title slate.
The character is named after the star Betelgeuse. The movie is named after the pronunciation of that name.
Yes, I’m aware. Doesn’t change what I said.
I see nothing in the title nor the description about the place from the first comic that says that the place is exclusively for video game characters. Only that is involves Manly Guys. Therefore, as long as the comic features Manly Guys and there are Manly Things involved, there should be no problem.
Aw, I feel sad that I didn’t recognize Brick. Guess I’m just used to him being almost too big to fit through doors.
Been loving this comic since I saw it as an entry for the contest back on the Escapist, and managed to stumble back over it here.
It’s difficult to pick out the guy on the right as Brick; I wouldn’t have picked him if you hadn’t said so. Still, I absolutely love the comic, and I look forward to more Jared!
Incidentally, I don’t read many comic books, so macho characters and associated jokes from there and some other media will go pretty much completely over my head. But I don’t mind; I consider it an educational opportunity! :)
I don’t mean characters from other things, I mean the next few comics will be wholly original content with nothing but characters of my own creation
kewl, so like, Jared?
yeah.
Well, Kain is a vampire, so killing people to survive is more or less (part of) what he does. Unless you’re trying to get him to switch to blood packs. Which didn’t exist in his games. :P
Anyway, cool to see one of my all-time favorite video game heroes (or antiheroes is more like it) here. Not too fond of the way he looks in the bottom left panel, but eh, who cares. It’s mostly because, even though kain has a bit more of an emotional range than many other ‘macho’ characters, that’s one expression I’d never expected to see Kain make.
But then again I suppose that’s why it’s so funny.
KAaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin!
Okay, you got his crest wrong a little bit, but Kaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin! I mean, I still recognized him without even a split-second of thinking, so yeah.
And I, for one, am totally fine with an absence of video game characters. I might actually get a friend of mine to, uh, “tune in” more regularly, seeing as he hates vg webcomics.
I read that as KHAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNN
Oooh Do an A-team one, or maybe Rambo, or Terminator! yeah, that’d be cool….
I should check out Borderlands one of these days :)
Its good fun with friends, but there is literally nothing more to it rather than shooting enemies with an increasing degree of health and looting their bodies for very little actual value.
It’s like Fallout 3 on Steroids!
Like Dragon age: origins to Oblivion. *Sighs dreamingly*
Greedy Bastard! Elderly shoppers drop the best stuff!
HAHAHA nice.
I kid you not, I thought that Brick was the guy from Too Human untill I read the comments and tags. Also, this the first time I’ve seen Kain in anything for like 3 years, so props for that.
Brick seems to be a fairly generic beefy guy design without the Borderlands stylization.
Everyone noticed Kain and Brick… but has anyone noticed her HILARIOUS reaction face at the last panel?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Yay! You remembered Kain :)
And sadly I don’t remember the guy ^^;
Personally I think it was better if you added Kratos, since more people know him, but that is just me :)
Thank you again for the comic ;)
Don’t need this to turn into thepunchlineiskratos.com
I’d still read it.
Honestly, I wouldn’t. Even if making fun of him IS hilarious.
Hmm, good point :)
Still, thank you very much for adding Kain ^_^
There needs to be gut parts to go with the blood stains.
I actually don’t mind not using videogames. Then again, I myself am horribly biased towards the mockery of huge manly men anyway. XD
*shameless admition* I dunno who half of these ppl are.,. i recognised snake, and ganadorf, and link… and a few others… but quey???? I am but a humble woman who plays very little computer games (i DO play them mthough* and knows very little of the world…. please pitty me <3
on a different note, LOVE LOVE LOVE ^_^
I always list all the characters and the games they’re from in the tags. Usually I mention in the comments too. Kain is from Legacy of Kain, Brick is from Borderlands.
yeah, i noticed after a while ^_^ thanks
I don’t mean to be the annoying person who picks things apart but I am curious… what happened to the commander’s black eye? Probably just a minor forgetful thing but if he has super awesome regeneration powers that would be sweet too ;D
If you really picked things apart you’d notice it’s been gradually fading over the past three comics. :P
He gets over bruises quick. Mostly because if he didn’t I’d be drawing him with a black eye for months.
I swear, when I saw Kain walk in I thought there was going to be a Twilight joke involved.
Pity.
ANYWAY lol Brick.
Paying attention to twilight validates it.
True. Probably better he doesn’t know, he might take a cue from Duke.
Ah, currently nameless girl, representing the average person.
…Man, you really need to name her.
Ah well, I’m sure it will come to you if it hasn’t already.
…Can you put Piccolo from DBZ in here?
Her name is Sarah Jones, but it won’t be relevant until a few strips from now.
I have a feeling a Terminator joke is going to pop up at some point in the future when her name has relevance…
Having never played Borderlands, I thought Brick was Lynch, thus making the “Kain and Lynch” joke.
I thought at first that it would have been a Kain and Lynch pun as well, as I’d not played borderlands so I didn’t know who Brick was. But then I’ve never played Kane and Lynch either, but their names are in the title. I did recognise him as Kain straight away too. I’ve not seen gargoyles so wouldn’t know anyone else who might look like Kain.
I’ve never even heard of Kane and Lynch to the best of my knowledge…
i totally think that Mordecai would have been a beter suited Borderlands reference, but this is funny anyway :D
He’d probably be easier to recognize but I’m all about the tanks, and Brick is like three Mordecais strapped together.
This may be a bit too soon, but i would love to see a Red Dead Redemption based comic, John Marston does seem slightly suitable :D
John Marston isn’t ripped: he just knows how to use guns and ride a horse.
That’s all you need.
But, I mean, I’d probably do a Clint Eastwood comic before a Red Dead Redemption one. Especially since I spend so much time at work and drawing comics that I haven’t had a chance to play Red Dead Redemption yet.
I like Clint Eastwood. You should add some characters from World of Warcraft, though. Do something with Thrall, or like… Illidan Stormrage.
Umm bit of a *spoiler* i think there would be complications to using John because of the way red dead ended. On an unrelated but entirely obvious side note I love this comic sooo much :D
Just started watching this comic yesterday and it’s friggin’ sweet.
Also, not many people that ripped exist in reality, save for Arnold Schwartzenegger. Also, you can’t have this comic without eventually putting Superman in there >:O
The problem with that is that Superman is already incredibly well adjusted compared to the rest of the beefcakes we’ve seen thus far, with a successful job as a reporter and a never-ending battle against the forces of evil to throw himself into.
…..LOL…
The new characters are Senor and Doom and their buttventures.
Naw, that tale got old pretty quick.
Well, if it’s not JUST video games, I would like to nominate Donald Duck.
Because for some reason, I can imagine Donald Duck among this crowd.
I don’t just mean “not video games” because I’ve already had references to comics and stuff, I just mean all original characters, no riffing on existing media.
You know who you should include in this comic? Colossus from X-Men. Maybe Wolverine, even though he’s short. OOH! And Hun from TMNT! maybe some real life wrestlers…
Still waiting on that Master Chief episode >:(
welp, I’ve got the next couple months written and he’s not in them so…. sorry, but I wouldn’t be holding my breath. He’s a fan favourite, I don’t want to use him if I don’t have something clever for him to do. When I just trot out a character for the sake of making a cameo it makes for a pretty lame joke. Like this one.
you could do an extra
No, I really couldn’t. I’m at work at least twelve hours a day, usually more.
I could do an extra >.>
If you want to, I’ll put it up :P
okay i did some doodles and i finally noticed i have never actually done a full spartan amor, this is going to be hard
Oh. I wondered why that brought astronomy up in my head.
I think I know where those two guys were working…
Legacy of Kain.
Hell yeah.
If you picture Kain with a whiny Paris Hilton voice, and Brick with a voice like Nicole Ritchie, THEN the joke gets sense.
Kratos? Oh, the macho of machos , the new god of war, not being joked enough? mwahaha….
That´s like Stallone wearing a leotard and saying “does it make me look fat”?
I think the best one to mock would be Vegeta from DBZ… he’s got an anger problem, he’s short and he has stupid hair….
But who ever you pick would be awesome too XD
Oh, the joy you bring to my faint, feminine heart…
This entire webcomic makes me giggle. I’m not even very familiar with most of the characters, and it still makes me giggle. A lack of video game jokes won’t faze me in the least. Please, do carry on.
I demand that you put in “generic character:!!!
DEMAND IT. The character is my favourite, and “generic character” SHOULD be in your comic goddammit. Why can’t you pander to my will!!!
HAVE I NOT FED YOU ENOUGH PUDDING!!?! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME!!!
:P I for one am very excited seeing you draw whatever the fuck you want and *posting* it.
This is very much what drawing this comic is beginning to feel like.
Because you replied to me I am going to take it as an invitation to spam every one of your messengers because that means we are true friends and I will show you pictures of my original characters (!!!!!) and ask you to draw them for me!!!!!!!! BECAUSE WE ARE FRIENDS NOW WHO WHOO.
I will buy you a few beers in a week or two when I invite myself over. I think you will need it. And pudding.
ahahahha we still have so much pudding left over :P 15 hour days at the studio makes for not much pudding-making time…
Considering how you love drawing manly men the most, it doesn’t surprise me.
Look I just hope you intend to acknowledge Predators which is coming soon to a theatre near you. (Also no A-team Joke? There are men manlier than the A-team?)
I write all of these weeks ahead of when they show up online. I can’t really cut away for one-shot gags to fit in every cameo people are hounding me for when I’m in the middle of a continuity-based run of strips. A-Team was awesome, but I don’t feel like jamming in an reference just because AHAHAHHAHAH IT’S CURRENT SO THAT MAKES IT RELEVANT AND FUNNY RIGHT?
Plus, usually I only make fun of new movies when they’re bad, å la Those Clash of the Titans strips. I’d like to be able to do more of those, but I have barely any free time at all.
This strip is great and i get great laughs out of it just about every Monday without fail. Not gonna hound you for a cameo because you’ve already trotted out several of my favorite characters.
PS. The Dragon age stuff was the best especially since few people play enough of the game to reference the really funny parts of it.
More Frankenisher comics immediately. Never draw The Russian with boobs again, though – jokes been done and I’ve still got the jibblies from it.
But that’s how the Russian looks now :P
Found this comic today. It’s fantastic. Hope you eventually get the chance and the inclination to include both Garrosh and Varian. :D
I have no idea who those people are.
I love this comic, it just gets better and better, you always en up seeing your favourite characters the ways you (at least one time) imagined, i’m recomending it to all my friends.
PS: you should make a facebook app so we could share it in a more easy way
Forgive me if this makes me sound like a dinosaur, but how would making a facebook page make sharing this easier? Isn’t it equally easy to like… post a link on someone’s wall? No offense meant, I’m honestly curious.
Lol idk, clicking is quicker than cpypastin…and i’m lazy, but already posted in my wall.
Keep up the good work.
I cannot wait to see the original characters over the next few weeks. The jokes about video games and other pop culture manly men are funny, sure – but the girl, Commando, and Jared are the characters who have kept me reading.
Looking forward to Monday!
Funny – didn’t recognise Brick, but that joke works all by itself.
Shame about Kain – I’d say he’s entirely out of place in this continuity, being an aristocratic magnificent bastard with delightfully Shakespearean dialogue.
I can honestly say that if I saw a beefy guy with scars all over his face or a dude with honest-to-god claws, fangs, and a wicked sweet sash bagging my groceries, the last thing I would think is that he wasn’t macho.
“Drop items” meaning the groceries of course, right?
at least they alk through the front door epicly
Honestly, I’m kind of glad it’s not just video game jokes. Your video game jokes are very funny, but outside of the Pokemon/Zelda ones, I don’t get the references, and googling them makes jokes sound like something run through bablefish. They’re still funny, but I know I’m missing out on something. The jokes that involve the main characters, develop them (and involve story arcs), those I get and enjoy the most, so I’m glad that there are more of those.
I guess I was one of the few people who went “omg it’s Brick!” when I saw the ugly guy with the scar across his lip. Admittedly, he is my favorite character in Borderlands.
Never would have thought that was Brick… cos Brick is supposed to have a savage beast type personality and appearance… but then again I have only played as Mordecai in Borderlands
And brick is described as smelling of death and blood and growling like and animal… so that second last frame does not really suit him… he should have a “Im gonna kill you if you mess with me” demeanour
Brick has a soft side, or did you miss the part of the intro to the game where he’s got the puppy? He carries that puppy’s foot on a chain where-ever he goes. Brick friggin’ loves that dog, man.
I knew Brick had to be in this comic somewhere; his comments on TV Tropes kind of just give that away:
Brick hits like a freight train.
– Brick doesn’t hit like a freight train; freight trains hit like Brick.
– – Pfft, freight trains wish they could hit like Brick.
I just realized that was Brick. I don’t read the commentary as often as I should. I am dumb.
Although, that means that this comic contains…
*puts on sunglasses*
A Brick Joke.
YYEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!
lol @ the CSI joke, they never get old.
It’s ok, Brick. *drops some money on the ground*
Hah! Loved that you added Kain! I was afraid he was forgotten :D
Errr… ‘Love’, grammatical error on my part
Guess Raziel didn’t meet the minimum pectoral girth requirement. Oh well, I thought Kain was less emo anyway
When I first read this, I thought the Brick was the Marine from the original Doom. Or Doomguy from the Doom Comic.
A dude could drown in all the commentary, blabbering and bickering around these parts…
But I will chime in and note I loved the Legacy of Kain games… even if Kain never got the nifty “immunity to water” power that Raziel got.
Ahahaha! If there’s a weak joke here, it’s just setup for that last line, which is great!
And Jonsey has that moment when she thanks all of the Powers-That-Be that she didn’t have to do any grocery shopping on that particular day…
