I gotta say, the whole Pawn system in Dragon’s Dogma makes me feel guilty 100% of the time
So my buddy introduced me to Dragon’s Dogma and I’m pretty sure bulking up my pawn and making him a FIERCE WARRIOR so other people will take him out questing is more fun than whatever the actual story in the game is. Something about a talking dragon eating my heart but I’m still kicking and punching dudes? Who knows, I just want a bow my pawn can use now that I upgraded him to a ranger instead of whatever they call rogues in this game.
If you want to take my pawn out on the town, his name is Tigris (and my PSN is so easy to guess it’s probably not worth saying), I’m sorry he’s only like level 16 or something but I guess at least that means he’ll be useful to anyone I convinced to try the game out because of this comic?

Hmm that armor seems really uncomfortable. And why choose Jared?
Corset armor fits him.
Now you can’t not think it.
CURSES!
He is not bright enough to know he is just a meat shield.

you are cleary forgetting that he has mister fish with him :)
well atleast I hope he took mister fish :P
Given the size of Mr Fish, and the fact Jared doesn’t keep him in a pokeball, it is safe to say he isn’t around for this right here.
He’s probably watching Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares right now.
LOL! I know it’d be extreme overkill if Jared actually did bring Mr. Fish along on that quest, but I still can’t help hoping that he’ll make an appearance.
Now, what IS Jared shooting at? /never played more than demo/
My best guess is that he’s still learning how to knock the arrow in the bow, and will try aiming next.
His foot, apparently.
Looks like his knee, to me. :D
Go sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done
Now I really want to try this game out! The pawn system seems like a lot of fun, it’s a shame that I don’t have online to try pawn-swapping.
You didn’t convince me cus I’m already playing it!
level 91, I’ll give your guy some cool shit.
And after they’ve relied on Jared’s help they’ll send him back with either a rock, a rotten apple, or sour scrag of beast. People are soooo damned appreciative in that game. But still, can’t wait for the upcoming expansion in a few more days! :)
Anyways, okay, now I totally want to help your pawn out, what’s his name, level and vocation? I’ll send something nice, I promise. Only wish you could actually leave your own comments and not prepackaged ones… :D
Oh, dur, I’m blind! All that info was right there.
I’ve only played the demo, but I like it enough to but it (in a couple days, once I get my paycheck.) Once I do, you bet your sweet ass I’m gonna hire him. However, are warriors really only able to weild two-handed swords?
Unrelated: where does the Commander run his agency from? I’m a manly enough dude to hang out with him.
…wow, I so can’t type this morning.
Warriors are made for 2handed swords or mauls, Fighters use a sword and shield, and Mage Knights (a player only class, sorry pawns) can use a sword or maul and a magic shield, which is somehow different from a normal shield.
Warriors are tier 2 classes, you start with an option of Fighter, Rogue, or Mage
I’d probably stick with a fighter, or a Mage Knight, then. I don’t like two-handed weapons that much.
Don’t buy it just yet. The new stand alone DD adventure coming in April will come with a copy of the original.
Thanks for that. :)
Depending on the photocopier, this might actually be the easier task…
Is there a place you can go to see a listing of potential recruits? Some sort of pawn shop, perhaps.
actually there is, there’s a stone thing that takes you into a little pawn dimension where you can pick from a big library of all of the other pawns out there.
Oh god that was horrible…
I don’t think there is, but there WAS a show on television touting all the best pawns one can recruit. I think they called it Pawn Stars.
Are you sure those were the BEST pawns? I would think that having low battle rating, appearance, and only two-star helpfulness would be inconvinent. On the other hand, you could buy and sell everything you could ever want to/from them, and never have to stop stabbing dudes.
3 of my friends play it, or at least they used to. They all seemed to have a lot of fun with it. Haven’t seen em play it recently though…partially due to GW2 I’m guessing /shrug
I couldn’t figure out the controls but the story seemed interesting and I really liked the character/pawn creation bits :p
Also the idea of Jared being a pawn is hilarious
Dragon’s Dogma actually does have a story, but it only really starts, like, 20 hours in.
I wonder if the Commander is more worried about Jared or them.
As soon as I saw the mushroom, I knew what was happening. Man, I love Dragons Dogma. It seems to follow European mythology pretty well for the first third of the game, but after that you will quickly realize that it came straight from Japan.
The game is like blatantly and unabashedly the Breath of Fire guys trying to hammer Dragon age into Skyrim.
That is probably the greatest thing ever.
I’m a BIT of a cynic, so my brain set the awesome of Squid’s description aside and went, “Now how could that be messed up?” Then I remembered playing the game at a friends house and stopped asking, because ONCE you know what you’re doing, it is intensely fun.
Another one I’ll never get a shot at … ain’t got no PS3, dawg, only gots Gamecast.
You can get it for 360. No PC, I don’t think.
Jared looks kinda bishie in that hood…mmm…dem bangs.
Hey! We already HAD an arc for that, get the hell outta here.
You will probably always be sent random stuff that takes up weight in a person’s inventory. Sometimes its useful though, since some people send potent warishes. And on the rare occasion, ferry stones and warp crystals to compensate for the lack of fast travel.
And on once occasion I got a Wakestone, which all things considered is actually pretty good.
It surprises me how useful a wakestone actually was, not just for reviving yourself but for actually being significant even outside of quests that require it.
I have never been a fan of computer controlled NPCs. They always just seem to get in the way regardless of what game you are playing. Dragon’s Dogma, Fallout, even in the later days of Everquest.
The Dragon’s Dogma ones haven’t been too bad. I kind of like the almost-tactics system they have set up where you’re basically inventing a playing style/personality for your pawn by hanging out with them and chatting. Honestly, my pawns are better at monster fighting than I am, I can never find the things I’m supposed to be attacking because everything in the game is fucking brown and green, usually I just wait for them to start throwing arrows and fireballs in a direction and follow that,
I wish I could get mine to do things like that.
The Pawn’s AI is fine enough for all but one class I’d say. If you’re a sorcerer who takes a long time to cast a big spell and need your enemies distracted? The Pawn AI is extremely frustrating. Regardless of how the AI is set they refuse to get far enough away from you for larger enemies’ swipes to not hit both of you. They’re more likely to lure the enemies to you then anything else. Arisen as a Sorcerer is just asking for trouble, which is sad as I love filling the battlefield with Tornados.
I would never play a caster so that’s not an issue for me, at least.
He just talked me out of trying to play caster in Dragon’s Dogma.
Don’t let him talk you out of spell casting. I LOVED playing Sorceror on my first playthrough. Honestly, REAL early game as a mage is hard, but early game is hard anyways. If you’re level 25+ and still waiting for a fight to start before unloading your spells, your doing it wrong.
You drop the tornados and meteors and poison spheres on your foes before they know you’re there and theres nothing they can do about it.
Ranger Pawn with a Sorceror Arisen is a wonderful combo, especially if you give them skills with knock down and pin.
Played a Sorcerer and loved it. There isn’t much that you can’t one, two, or three shot. The trick is using the right spell for the right monster. The only encounter I had a hilariously hard time with was late in the game – Wight (Lich, maybe?), dark chimera, and 3-4 hell hounds. I can’t remember. The hounds prevented me from getting almost any spells off.
I started playing Dragon’s Dogma a couple of weeks ago, I’m addicted now :) I must have finished the game like 6 or 7 times now, and have reached lvl 163. Even got 4 online Ur-Dragon kills.
If anyone wants to be friends, my PSN and my pawn are both called Elifia. I got some spare weapons and armor pieces too, if anyone needs it.
As for the comic, at least this Arisen was nice enough to sent a note the moment they hired Jared. Usually they don’t send a note until they release the pawn :P
I think of every time my pawns have been hired, 1 in 20 times a comment will be left. And 5 in 6 times they’ll get back a rock or some rotten fruit. Good scores but never good….. goods. :)
Heh, my pawn hasn’t even been hired that often yet. Usually it’s just the system giving me stuff. I think my pawn has been hired maybe 3 or 4 times by actual other people.
At some point I used a second account to hire my own pawn. Leveled from 1 to 45, earned 200k RC. That’s way way way more than I ever got from other people.
I use my pawns as sacrificial arrows…
Oh and what class are you guys using? The class I ended up playing the most is a Magic type, Magick Archer, hence pawn-arrows.
Am I the only one that first saw the fletching as a bitchin’ goatee on Jared?
Oh thank god, someone else thought that at first!
Well, I didn’t at first, but now that you mention it… looks like Scott Ian.
Dude, he totally does!
Dragon’s Dogma was fun I gotta get it again. my best memory is getting hit with a club and being knocked off a cliff.

Nobody loves XBox Dragon’s Dogma….
Hey! I like it!
Then again I only ever played it on the xbox.
OMG, I just started Dragon’ Dogma this week!
this… is….. AWESOME!
Damn. I made pawns to look like the ones from Berserk. Now i get friend requests from japan like crazy for Schrieke. Though i just really love is to just run around and look for wyverns.
As long as your pawn’s inclination isn’t set to “Guardian” he’ll be fine. Mages tend to get borrowed more though since they can heal and buff, so if you need the Rift Crystals go that way.
Too bad I’m playing on the Xbox. Woulda been interesting to see what a level 16 pawn would do with dragonforged stuff given to it.
Actually, apparently my friend just suited him up with a bunch of dragon forged stuff and doubled his stats.
So my question is when will Guts from Berserk make his way to the Agency? He’s like the antithesis of bishounen, and Berserk seems like it’s right up ‘squid’s alley. The only character that I can think of that’s a better antihero is Roland from The Dark Tower. Just wondering.
I hope Guts or Gatts, or gutts makes it in. That would be awesome. But ‘Coelasquid’ maybe doesn’t know about him? The manga is slowly but surely .. ongoing.
You know, Jared would look good with a beard…
Haha! I agree. At first I thought he was rocking a nice goatee, then I realized it was just the fletching on the arrow :\
I still love ZeroPunctuation’s review of the game, where Yahtzee figured out it’s basically pimping.
That’s the exact same thing I was thinking while reading this page.
i always check out his reviews just for the humor
Think I’m only like lvl 22 so I think I might actually pop it out again and try and finish it. Helping out others pawns is one of my secret joys as well. Despite that I haven’t played since Oct.
First letter not addressed to “Bad Ass Commander”
That’s his name, so it’s a bit insulting.
Wow, this comic might have gotten me back into this game, all I can say though is that is alot more fun if you are playing with other people’s pawns, not just computer generated ones, you actually feel like you are helping other people.
P.S. Just realised I deleted my save and have to go through the whole harpy road on the way to Gran Soren bull****… wish me luck.
Get eaten by a giant monster or get a paper cut.
You lose either way. ;)
Oo
I am now one of those people convinced to buy this game.
I just ready every single strip on this page today. I was entertained. *Pulls the “Entertained” lever*
I saw this comic today, and I had just started playing Dragon’s Dogma about three days ago. I don’t know why, but that makes me feel awesome.
Also, I feel really guilty about the pawn system as well, because if I find a new pawn that’s better than one of the ones that I have, I’ll hire them, and then throw the old now unhired pawn off a ledge for no good reason. I have also done that to a civilian on accident…
Roll a ‘1’ in that position and his dumb luck will take over and kill that cyclops faster than Kratos on a eye hunt.
You know, I actually think he looks better in that hood; his hair is more in keeping with that outfit. Also, that particular pose makes him look a lot more manly, along with his expression (somehow) and the fact that he’s full-drawing that bow in an awkward position. Even if he hasn’t managed to nock his arrow.
This did make me laugh! However, as someone who does archery on and off… Is Jared’s grip supposed to be that comically bad? Besides not having nocked the arrow, I mean. If his right hand’s grip on the bow was flipped so his thumb’s where his fingers are now, it would be merely poor form rather than almost physically impossible. If you doubt me, try recreating that pose with two rulers or something – if he tries to fire he’s going to hit the back of his arm with the string.
I was wondering if anybody else noticed that. Or those, rather. But yeah, he hasn’t nocked the arrow, the fletching is behind his fingers, and the way he’s holding it is the reverse of what most bows are made to do. It could be his preference, but I strongly doubt that. Also the hand that’s holding the string is backwards; it’s very likely he’ll end up flicking himself in the face if he releases an arrow like that. This is like Jared with guns… although bow and arrows are easier, in a way. Although his aim with the bow and arrow will likely be even worse. Bows are a bit harder to aim than your average gun.
Funny thing, that Arisen contrary to first appearance is actually fairly generous.
He gave the mushroom yes but you have to remember, all Pawn’s go in with the gear that they last had.
Anything that they equip while in someone else’s game is given as a gift.
In other words the commander is about to get a new bow and armor.
Cheap looking armor and bow but still much better then a mushroom.
I rather like how Jared is holding the arrow under his chin and is trying to draw the string up to it in order to nock it. It brought a smile to my face. So many shades of “you’re doing it wrong.”
Ooh ooh will Commander save the day?! Would LOVE to watch him kick monster ass!
Yahtzee’s review sums it ip for me. “Wait a minute, am i pimping?”
Holy crap, Jared can actually draw a bow with those little noodle arms of his? I wouldn’t have expected that.
Well, he DID bludgeon a wimpfish into a giant laser dragon
I own this game!!! Do you still have your character?
Honestly, that Arisen must be a few lanterns short of a lit cave, to want jared. He’s like… level -20 probably. Why not take Mr. Fish?
