Whoa seriously? I never played the game, so when she said “I know Shale isn’t a guy”, I assumed that meant “I know he isn’t human”. …I mean tons of other guys in this comic aren’t either, but I took it to mean “I know he’s not a fleshy meatbag.”
Granted, lady-dwarves are still manlier than most human males.
Speaking of meatbags …
Reminds me of a much loved assassination droid that has yet to make an appearance.
I meant more on the actual gameplay standpoint. I’m afraid I never had much use for keeping Zevran around, while Lel’s archery could be really handy. =/
Somewhere in the back, Oghren’s helping set up the catering for the band. Which, of course, means “drinking every goddamned bottle he comes across and replacing it with apple juice – if you’re lucky.”
Speaking of, why isn’t Oghren in this comic yet? He’s a manly manly ma-er, dwarf, isn’t he?
That’s too harsh. Mind you, he definately doesn’t qualify in the same category of man as Sten or Kratos, but they’re not really men. More like personifications of violence and fury. Alistair has emotions, so he’s not a ‘manly man’.
I didn’t feel like Sten was a personifacation of anything, he seemed like a well rounded character for a hardened military authority brought up in a society with strict old-world values. He had that naivete when he said things that came across as racist or sexist that he honestly wasn’t trying to be provocative, things in Ferelden were just so wildly outside of his realm of understanding that he had to question them. Like a militant islamic borg variant of Hank Hill.
That said, I did find Alistair kind of irritating and left him at the camp most of the time. He felt kind of like he belonged more in a Harlequin romance fantasy than on my smashy brawler team.
I never used Sten for at least two particular reasons:
One was that he made statements with absolute certainty that were absolutely wrong. He did this frequently, and it was often annoying. The whole “women can’t be warriors” one tended to wind me up the most since I mostly play female characters. Made me wish there was an option to beat him down and carve “QED” into his face in reply.
But worse than that was that if you did the same back to him, he disapproves of it. Wut?!! Turns out that the way to win Sten’s approval is to recite trite emotional crap that I wouldn’t want to say anyway. If, like I did, you try to gain his approval by responding to him as he does to you, it has the opposite effect on him. Bloody hypocrite.
I get the impression the Qunari race wasn’t well fleshed out back in Origins… and they only really got all the real beef of the race fleshed out in time for Dragon Age 2.
Hey wow, it’s nice that you’ve taken it upon yourself to talk about how poorly a character you admittedly didn’t play was handled, because it’s pretty clear this isn’t something you have a lot of first-hand experience with. If you try to pander to Sten he disapproves, the only way to get his loyalty up is to backsass him, choose all the sarcastic options or the ones where you stand up to him and tell him you’re going to do what you want regardless of what he thinks. There’s one part where the conversation path that leads to the maximum approval gain is to reject his opinions until you goad him into a fight, and then defeat him to earn his respect.
If you actually, you know, played the game with him instead of writing angry fanfiction, you’d have seen them peel back a couple layers of Qunari society and realize that the “women can’t be warriors” things is an ingrained prejudice (that you’re supposed to confront him on) he cultivated in a society where men do all of the manual labour and women focus on administraion, education, and spirituality. If you read up on Qunari society, it’s pretty nearly a matriarchal society, with women determining everything from who breeds with each other to what job everyone will do. They just aren’t warriors. Sten being baffled by the idea of female warriors is his own ignorance, DA:O worldbuilding, and a pretty nifty piece of character development.
Honestly, I hated the Qunari for a whole lot of reasons in DA2, but mostly because they cast aside all of the worldbuilding they did in DA:O regarding the Qunari’s regimented society and superior scientific advancement to turn them into the “primitive” demon people. They just kind of wiped the slate and threw in a bunch of Warcraft Draenei Disney gargoyles and called it a day.
Word has it you can in the next Mass Effect. I mean, I guess you could be a lesbian in all of the games so far, but next one m!Shep can romance the boys.
all, right. METAL!!!!! and zevran, everyone knows glam metal stopped being popular after the 90’s, nowadays it’s mostly nu metal(dear god i wish i lived in the 70’s/80’s)
dawg have you SEEN those matador outfits? Even in Sweden they think that’s gay. SWEDEN
And what’s with all the swishy capes? Even superheroes think; well you get the picture.
I agree. Everyone thinks that those outfits are gay, even Swedes. Eurovison is less gay than those matador outfits. EUROVISION! Because at least that competition isn’t taken seriously (and everyone wants it to be as camp as possible).
Bah! Swedes! It’s thanks to people like you that men’s clothing became a crashing bore; meanwhile, the only noteworthy thing you’ve given to the world is every drag queen’s favorite music group.
It’s supposed to be a Spanish version of Venice. It was originally going to be called Calabria but they changed it because that’s an actual region in Italy and it was too on-the-nose for them.
I can hear Zevran’s buttcheeks flap independently in the wind~*~*`
Welp, that mental image is gonna be with me until I die… yup…
You got some loose-ass buttcheeks there, bruh.
See, this is why everyone criticizes skipping leg day.
Hey I’ll keep an eye on your work ;p. Great Job :). It’s already one of my favourite Comics.
WOO! Nice to see the Coela with a chunk of the webcomicsphere to call her own at last :D
WHY IS EVERYONE NAMED DAVE?
“Dave’s not here!”
~Tommy Chong
*cough*fag*cough*
Considering he’s a romantic option for both female and male players in Dragon Age…
Thanks Captain Obvious!
Oh Zevran… when it doesn’t have to do with seducin’ or assassinatin’, you fail. EPICALLY.
Though he wasn’t all that great at the assassinatin’ part either.
Congrats on your chunk of web! Glee! I will bookmark. IMMEDIATELY.
Haven’t played Dragon-age but the elf guy should have been a groupie.

You do realize Shale is a woman :D
‘I know Shale isn’t a guy’
Just read her comment.
I love Shale~

Naw, Shale’s a pimped out lady-dwarf.
Granted, lady-dwarves are still manlier than most human males.
Speaking of meatbags …

I thought the same thing, haha.
Too bad he could not cut it as the the obligatory ‘skinny but incredibly fast’ one. They could have has his speed.
But…that is exactly what he does.
Leliana does everything Zevran does better.
Leliana’s way better at being a boring waste of a character, I guess.
I meant more on the actual gameplay standpoint. I’m afraid I never had much use for keeping Zevran around, while Lel’s archery could be really handy. =/
So what was the concert they needed dragon-wranglers for? I’m guessing Dragonforce, “The hardest metal known to man”.
Did u know Shale is a woman, right?
U did read the comment I posted under this comic, right?

i must agree, oghren was my favorite!
This became even funnier once I saw one of your “extras”. Also, I’d ask where Alistair is but he’s kind of… nebbish?
But what about Alistair? Why isn’t he included? :'(
Because you are a fangirl and Alistair is a manchild.

Heh. Epic comment there. =D

“Angry fanfiction.” XDDD
Also, late comment is late.
Come on, Zevran! Get your head in the game! Obviously he has your _hair_.
I know this is a late post…but what about Ogren? (or whoever) he was so many… D:
Should’ve gotten Alitstar! God damn it!
you can be gay in dragon age, that is so cool
Word has it you can in the next Mass Effect. I mean, I guess you could be a lesbian in all of the games so far, but next one m!Shep can romance the boys.

i loved dragon age origins. and this comic rocks
oh crap, forgot to mention: prolly a dragonforce concert. (puts dollar in pun jar)
But Zevran’s Spanish or something, which is like a free pass for gayness, really.
WHAT??!!
dawg have you SEEN those matador outfits? Even in Sweden they think that’s gay. SWEDEN

I pegged Antiva as more of an arabic-style place.
It’s supposed to be a Spanish version of Venice. It was originally going to be called Calabria but they changed it because that’s an actual region in Italy and it was too on-the-nose for them.
Its funny cos Shale is a chic :P
Oh Sten, I’ll give you as much cake and paintings as you want <3
And my ax!
Zevran is plenty manly.
It takes a real man to fuck another man in the arse.
Oh my god this is just too hilarious. Although Zevran strikes me as more of a punk rock ala Green Day kind of guy.

So I’d like to note it’s been over five years since this was published, and I just today figured out they were talking about music.
