Actual Pigeon Collection Avoidance Tactic
August 1, 2016
6:02 am
We taught the pigeons that we won’t pick them up if they’re in one of their little straw huts, so now they’ll beetle off and hole up inside them if they don’t want to go back in their cage yet.
Also, hey, they made some official announcements about the show I’ve been boarding on! The whole crew has been working really hard and putting a whole lot of love in, so I hope people enjoy it when it starts airing!
Coel, not to sound mean. But the art style for the Ben 10 reboot I find horrible. Looks too much like all the other recent cartoon shows.
I personally like it a lot, I was super excited when I showed up for my first day and saw the model sheets on the wall. Very fun to draw and expressive. I think of it like the Wind Waker of the Ben 10 family, people who were used to the old one might get caught off guard at first because it’s not what they expected, but there’s a lot of personality to it.
I’m looking forward the reboot. Good work Coelasquid.
I didn’t even know Ben 10 was getting a reboot. Wonder if any of the older shows like Dexter’s Lab or Johnny Bravo will be getting an update in the future?
Samurai Jack is getting a kind-of reboot. It’s a mix of reboot and finishing what was started so long ago. In a distant land.
Aku, the shape-changing master of darkness, was sitting on CN’s board of directors for a good while, there. “Noooow finish your quest, foolish Samurai, when you are not even on the air! HA!”
He said his evil was law…
Samurai Jack *did* find the time portal that would allow him to complete his quest…BUT…He was not yet ready to defeat the guardian. He will be somewhat older before he is ready.
The entire series is on http://www.watchcartoononline.com/anime/samurai-jack
Yes, the Bouncer kept handing his butt to him. Would have been a great finale in its own right, but I think there were a few episodes after that that made the series feel incomplete.
Actually I remember one of the episodes shows him entering the portal, and he’s a lot older with graying hair, so he knows that now (when we last left Jack in the show) wasn’t the time. I can’t wait, that show was so amazing! Like the Light and Shadow ninja fight.
I’m also kinda partial to the Scotsman…
:D
I didn’t have much time this morning to make a properly thought out statement.
The art itself isn’t really bad, it’s just far to similar to shows like Steven Universe, Star vs The Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls and probably several less successful shows in the past few years.
A good animated show needs to have 4 good pillars and the solid foundation. The pillars being, storytelling, character depth/development, animation quality, and unique art style and the foundation being the fandom. Now a show can do well if 3 of the 4 art very good, and new shows usually get a few episodes to build that fandom.
With the Ben 10 reboot the following applies from what I’ve seen of it so far.
The story will have a hard time being original as they’ll rehash a bunch of the first series. Take the new Star Trek movies, the first two haven’t done anywhere near as well as the third since they were about detailing how it’s different and redoing the Wrath of Khan. Also I have heard they plan on only doing 11 minutes episodes which feels insulting, like they think the show won’t hold viewer attention for a full half-hour. The short length also limits the ability to get into the story as it goes quickly. You also end up with the first section grabbing attention making the second section have to work harder to take it for itself.
I’ve always felt Ben 10 had good character depth, with the only issue I had was Omniverse shoehorning the whole Ben/Kai relationship into everything. As long as they keep to the whole Gwen/Ben dynamic they should be good on this front, depending on how they do their own development of it.
Animation quality itself is a given. A few minute clips don’t show much for it, but it does seem to have a smooth flow and few errors.
As stated, my qualm with the art style is that it’s just to similar to all the other popular shows out there. Makes it seem like the art directors sat down and rather than making a new style, or at least doing a style closer to the original with it’s own flair, they just figured people would like it if it looked like other shows. You can’t stand out if you look the same as everything else. It also feels far to cartoony for the series. Omniverse caught a lot of flak for being only a little cartoony as compared to the previous incarnations.
Since the Ben 10 franchise has a fandom already, doing a reboot can be difficult. They could’ve shown some of the concept art for it, watched the fandom’s reaction to help make their own decisions since they know that fans of precious series will usually give reboot a chance to wow them into liking it.
Now, a good way they could’ve handled it all, was instead of Ben 10, follow some of the established continuity. Show one of the timelines where Gwen gets the omnitrix instead. The fandom would be more willing to see how the Gwen 10 story unfolds even if it matches Ben 10 almost perfectly since it would have that unique twist on everything.
As I think I said, I’ll give it a few episodes to wow me, but It’ll be likely that by the 4th or 5th episode viewer count will drop, and they’re might be a mortal gap between what they get and their expectations for it.
11 minute episodes and cartoony animation styles are just the world we live in now, it appears. Steven Universe and Regular Show both do a good job in the constraints of that format, so I don’t think Ben 10 will be harmed too much. Especially with the summer vacation format working nicely for them to start the plot rolling with little to no set up.
I mean, the bare minimum set up is: the Rustbucket pulls into a small town.
As long as it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Nothing dour like Alien Force.
You’re complaining about several unrelated shows having similar artistic styles, but can I draw your attention to something? Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, possibly some others I’m forgetting. What did they have in common? An art style. They were Cartoon Network originals, and had some of the same creators in common, yet each managed to be very distinct in terms of tone, style, and story, and each was well-regarded by fans and critics alike.
What else did those shows have in common? 11-minute episodes. Any given half-hour block of one of those shows brought you two episodes. Instead of bouncing back and forth between an A plot and a B plot, each episode gave us one tight, self-contained story.
If you don’t want to like a show because it’s in the house style and the episodes will be shorter than you’re used to, that’s fair, but it’s disingenuous to pretend those traits can’t lead to anything good.
I don’t think Coela is in charge of character design, or writing, or deciding how long an episode is, ya know?
“The fanbase in the foundation”
Well shit, every animated series is doomed to failure if that’s the case.
Of course, the real question is if you heard any truth to the urban legend that they are trying to make Gwen as un-rule 34able as possible (not that anything can stop it, but that they are trying).
In other words, they’re challenging the internet.
They need to give up. IMMEDIATELY. They know not what they are doing..
Ffft. Don’t believe it. I don’t know anything about Ben-10, but I’m pretty sure an adult who’s spent any amount of time on the internet (including the show’s creators) would understand that’s an impossible goal. And really, why would they want to even try? “There’s no such thing as bad press” is an adage publishers still live by, and rule 34 popularity is still popularity. Just look at how big My Little Pony got (though that’s an entirely different discussion, I suppose)
Regardless of whether your comic audience likes this show or not, animation is animation. It takes hard work and dedication and a lot of people busting their asses. I may not like a certain art style of a cartoon all that much at all but the animation is still something that people have been putting their carreer into and I’m not going to insult something they have worked so hard on. Same here. And I have something to say to some of you here in the comments. I’ve been around the block a few times with webcomics, so I know how to and how NOT to treat an artist. You SUPPORT them when they go through hard times. You don’t whine and complain about how a FREE and FANTASTIC webcomic might be a few hours late or may not be colored when YOU want it to. That’s how you kill an artist’s passion for what they do. So just a friendly reminder to the few grumblers out there that you should be careful how you say things.
I’m glad you like it- you’re the one who has to work with it :P
Personally my issue is that my brain tend to latches on to the first thing it sees, and labels that one as the “right” version, and anything else looks wrong after that. It does this with music and remixes as well. So even if it’s entertaining, watching it would bug me.
Also, the art style seems to be a shift back towards more cartoony works, if that makes sense. I grew up in the 90’s and even into the 00’s a lot of cartoons got very realistic for a while (think DCAU, x-men evolution, Samurai Jack, the He-man reboot etc). Probably influenced by anime and maybe comic books.
I don’t know who was the first or when it started exactly, but now even cartoons with more complicated plotlines are getting a more looney-toonish artstyle again.
None of this is criticism, I’m just noting the shifting trends and patterns I see.
It honestly reminds me too much of the art style used for shows like Teen Titans GO. That is something I can never really get past because to me terrible story and more aside. The animation was just chibi and lacked expression. There was no relatability.
Now I could see why a young kid would like it but I think it would end up being like the original TMNT. Sure you liked it as a kid but you can never go back. There are reasons stuff like Batman the animated series is still watched or the 90s X-Men. While the 80s TMNT really isn’t and you need rose colored goggles to speak of it.
I mean, I do boards and some writing for it, so if you like my art and writing here it’s possible you might like my art and writing there too.
I honestly think it’s awesome that your on Ben 10. It was a favourite of mine growing up, and now one of my favourite webcomic artists is part of the new show! I do admit the animation looks a bit weird but I can’t really make a informed decision on whether I like it if I don’t at least see one episode, so just got to wait for it to come out. You keep rocking coel!!
When I heard it was getting rebooted, I was horrified, because I thought it was going to go the way of other Cartoon Network reboots (Teen Titans and Powerpuff Girls). Now that I know you’re not only making the art, but that you’re also involved with the writing, I can rest easier on the knowledge that it probably won’t be a substance-less parade of pop-culture references and cheap jokes.
Well I do like your humor and your writing. Not to mention much of your work currently. I find the commander and the stories you’ve woven to be a nice ball of fun every Monday to look forward to reading.
Course you are also what I’d love to see online more from woman as well. Strong female artists that take no shit and are more then frills or a pretty face. You remind me Samus or Ripley.
And I just dunno. So many bad reboots have been done lately by people who I guess you could say didn’t understand the source. That and outright mocked older fans for even speaking at all. So I’m very skeptical at the moment of reboots. I always kinda figured a reboot should bridge the parents with their kids so they both have something in common rather then mocking/alienating one to get the other.
So do they still value a shows success on the toys it sells? or is that finally a thing of the past?
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles is still watched, buddy…by a LOT of people. :P There’s a reason you can still find merch of it around. I have a lot easier time finding T shirts of the original series’ art than I have finding any merch on the original X-Men or Batman series. I personally own the entire series in a turtle van case, and watching it again as an adult I appreciate the dynamic between Shredder and Krang even more. Those two were frickin’ hilarious. The series was intended to be a satire of other hero shows and broke the 4th wall all the time. Still a lot to appreciate.
Between here and tumblr I honestly expected to see something horrible in the video but it’s a really cute animation style? So not only do I not understand going out of your way to tell an artist directly that you don’t like their artwork (rude and highly unnecessary) I don’t get what is so damn offensive to people about the art style either.
I’m of mixed mind on the new Ben 10, from that little blurb.
On the one hand, Ben 10 has never really had a strong continuity, especially with its art style, so I’m not too het up about this one’s more cartoony (which is a strange adjective, I now realize, in this situation) style- and also Ben 10 has always been a little more… relaxed with its seriousness, so the more jokey, ‘eternal summer vacation’ thing, I don’t think will be bad either.
BUT! That said, I do appreciate shows that have stronger continuity, and I’m worried that the lighter tone this show looks to have will interfere with you guys making callbacks and references, and having any sort of character growth at all. At least it looks like the story is going to stay true to the original monster-a-week premise, instead of going ‘gag a day’ like TTGO did.
I think it’s the proportions. He’s been given a really big head in the new reboot, which looks really lazy and samey in regards to other new series, whereas he was slightly more realistically proportioned in the old series. Sort of like what happened with Teen Titans.
Bobble head Ben 10.
The problem is that since the animation is finalized and he look like someone went air-pump insane with A Charlie Brown version of Hogarth Hughes (Iron Giant)…
The question is “worship of the Sacred Status Quo” or storytelling?
I like the series (not the cruddy second series or the awful Kid Dynamite, ugh, live action movie) in general, but it is terrifyingly afraid of moving forward. It suffers from “Compulsive Reboot-itis” that the entire comicbook industry is chocking to death under.
They want their core audience reading (which they have repulsed and rejected for 2 decades now), but the also thirst for new audiences which will never come (women are less than 7% of comicbook readership and women do not buy or own the toys — all polls to the contrary are Criminal Fraud).
Then there’s the trend of Race-Bendovering existing characters into other genders or unviable racial swaps (other demographics which also in vast numbers do not buy comicbooks or action figures). And that offends and repulsed the Core Audience of White Males with disposable incomes (comicbook sales are at their worst since the late 1960’s despite the increased awareness from high profit MARVEL COMICS movies — not the live action cancer that is DC COMICS movies which suffer from their similar failed Race-Bendovering incompetence).
The problem at the core is the characters being fundamentally trapped in world changing “Conflict Limbo Zones” where their popularity is their perpetual punishment (Ben 10 is on FOREVER SUMMER VACATION)… I can go into further HONEST detail, but that would lead to my being banned from this board for Offending Ideology (unprofitable that it is), but I’ve covered the important points as vaguely as is required so as to not cause hysterical paranoia amongst the afflicted with ideological poison. I’ve had the solution to the Gordian Knot for quite a few years now, but nobody listens, so they can suffer as they please for al I care.
Dragonking: you have terrible manners. You roll in at 6:15 in the morning, to Coela’s side project that she gives us for FREE while doing the things that earn her $$, then hate on said money-maker without so much as a “o and thanks for the free funnies.”
Coelasquid: thanks for the free funnies.
Srs. I mean, even if you can’t contain your feelings there’s nicer ways to say it.
Hear, hear!
Well, it’s not worse than Omniverse’s art. I hope the plot at least has more consistency than that thing. I stopped watching after some 10-12 episodes or so.
Omniverse was also severely hampered by trying to clean up the messes that Alien Force made of Ben 10 continuity. As much as I appreciated some of it, I still think they should have followed Ultimate Alien’s example and said “nope, we’re just gonna move past it and pretend that the continuity errors don’t exist unless we can take advantage of them to tell a story.”
I’m getting a very spoiled pet vibe here. Naming her princess was probably very appropriate if this is how she behaves.
She probably hid a thing of raptornip in there, too, so she can bliss out while puffing up and imitating Daddy Jet instead of Uncle Ace.
That’s Jet’s wife, Angel. She’s more monster-truck weightlifter than Ace.
Common child/pet tactic- divided the parents for conquest.
You’re right – with just the lineart, Ace and Angel look quite similar on a not-too-close look (going by faces and having short dark hair). That’s Angel, all right, and she sure didn’t teach Princess to shirk responsibility like that. Princess is clearly a daddy’s girl in that sense of the word.
The raptornip comment stands, though. Jet might just be aiding and abetting her wok-and-woo munchies…
Aww, fluffed up raptor <3
I'm unfamiliar with Ben10, I've heard the name but that's about it. Looks great and sounds like a lot of fun! Yay!
This is exactly how one of my cats acts. When he gets into the computer room where he’s not allowed, since he’s a nippy, cable chewing little bastard, he rushes under the desk, flops down, and spreads out. Nearly impossible to get a grip on him.
My cat has also learned this trick. When he’s just standing there or sitting and I walk over to pick him up, he sees me coming and immediately throws himself down on the floor and flattens out so I can’t get my hands under him. Little clever morsel. Mama is both proud and annoyed at you, baby.
Nothing a bottle of water with a spray nozzle cannot fix.
I taught my old room-mate’s cat that whenever it was in the same room as me it was going to get picked up and moved exactly one foot to the left regardless of what that meant for what it had been doing. I was really surprised at how well my little act of petty vengeance trained the cat into thinking that I was the alpha annoyance and that it should leave the room and not compete with me for my title. Cat was never in my bedroom after about two months of this.
Taking care of pigeons looks a lot like taking care of rabbits.
Chickens can learn that trick too, when they don’t want to leave their nest boxes.
That’s really exciting to hear that you’re part of the Ben 10 team! I’m normally skeptical about reboots and probably wouldn’t have watched it otherwise, but since an artist whose work I love is boarding for it, I’ll give this show a chance.
That feeling you get when your pets are misbehaving, but they’re being super cute at the same time, so you can’t stay mad at them.
Use to enjoy watching the original Ben10, and this looks good (going back to the basics), just a shame can’t afford Sky-TV to get CN (or the other cartoon channels) :(
Oh, and about today’s page? Great, Jet taking credit for he fluff-tors (fluffy-raptors) misbehaving
Have to wonder though: who’s house did Princess try and hide in, and what happened to that Teddy in panel three?
It’s obviously her little raptor house (Or Safe Space, all animals deserve their Safe Space, be it a tiny house, a cat scratch pole or a dog crate) and the Teddy is obviously a victim of Dinosaurs abusing him
Except, she said “Don’t go into that house”, implying that it is someone elses house, plus the first panel mentions going back to the Raptor Room, also implying that Princess’ ‘house’ would be in there, not in the main living area
Probably correct about dino-abuse regarding poor Ted
Don’t go into “that house” as in the one she was about to go run into to avoid capture. Your mom says “Don’t you eat that cookie” it means “don’t eat the cookie you’re about to eat” not “that is someone else’s cookie, eat a different cookie”.
Raptor room is just a kennel or something, this is just a little play area for them.
Somehow, when you just needed one cow to come into the barn, they immediately knew and ran to the other side of the field. The ones you didn’t need were happy to follow you around, chasing the one goofball…
I think the character designs are great, particularly Gwen’s look. Then again, I generally prefer the character making wry remarks about the main character’s poor decision making.
Goats do the same thing, but the followers don’t just follow… some of them interpose and demand scritches, forming a blockade.
A horned animal eager for head-scratches can be hazardously similar to one giving out head-butts.
My rabbits use that exact same tactic!
ill watch it if you sneak in the commander or jared or the canada guy into a background scene every now and then lol
I just love “Wok Wok Wok” as a sound effect. It just makes me laugh
Basically toothy tiny chocobos.
Wok, wok-a wok-a wok-a, woo-woo-woo…
Thought they sounded more like the Three Stooges (or that lobster guy from Futurama)
…or maybe even Fozzie the Bear.
They sound like this.
First off, looking forward to seeing the reboot, always loved the series and how creative Ben gets with his aliens. If you had a hand in some of the writing, its bound to add some spice to the show.
Second, spoiled raptor is spoiled, like one of my little kittens that refuses to nap unless she is able to snuggle with me.
Hooray fatbird raptor got bigger it is a beautiful thing
Oh no there’s just too much cute everywhere. I just love your puffball pigeon raptors.
Judging by that exclamation point, if Princess ever got into a Metal Gear Solid game she would probably be right at home in that setting.
Raptorloaf! Raptorloaf! Doesn’t do anything for that oaf. Goes inside, maximum fluff, Want me out, yeah well; tough. To heeerrr, civilized life is crazy, whenever you are lazy, you’ll find the Raptorloooooooaf?
Go easy on me, it’s Monday morning.
That’s pretty good.
He sounds so very proud of his fluffy little girl.
That’s a very impressive finger Jet has there.
YOU’RE WORKING ON THE NEW BEN 10 SERIES!!!
Yes, I’m very excited about it. Loved the franchise (although the less said about Alien Force, the better, I feel)
I WAS GOING TO SCREAM THE EXACT SAME THING!
*Fanbois out*
Especially because I don’t need to catch up on like 3 series of Ben 10 to appreciate it.
I just have one request: Just one–
CHARMCASTER.
…….also possibly Lucky Girl.
I wanna see Ghostfreak and his minions. A lot of them.
He used HARDEN! :D
<3 <3 <3 <3
Woo
Woo
woo
wooo! :3
IT’S SUPER EFFECTIVE!!!!!!!
(for once)
I swear, your floofy raptors might be my favorite thing in any webcomic ever. They fit in so perfect with the feel of “tough and deadly yet strangely cuddly” that your whole universe here has.
I can’t wait to see the new Ben 10. They’re lucky to have your talents.
I love bringing up to my friends that I know someone online who works on Ben 10 and Monster High! ^__^ This site is so awesome.
Does this mean we can expect a Generator Rex reboot? That show was 10 (heh) times better than Ben 10.
^THIS.
Please tell me I’m not the only one that played the Metal Gear Solid exclamation point sound effect in panel 1?
I was just about to post this exact thing.
Please record this happening and show it to us😂
On one hand: you’re working for Cartoon Network, good for you.
On the other hand: sheesh, they’re rebooting Ben 10? ALREADY???
my thoughts exactly! I couldn’t even finish the trailer bc I couldn’t process the fact that they were rebooting the franchise so quickly after the old one left the scene.
I mean realistically it’s been a year or two BUT it doesn’t feel that way! Probably because the original franchise went on for so long.
Dear Ms. Coelasquid, can you please post video of your pigeons puffing up to avoid the cages? That sounds adorable.
Seconded!
Thirded!
If ever we wonder why these two don’t have human kids…
Good news on the job, Coel! Congrats!
I wonder what happens if you pick up the little house thing and roll it around…?
(Ben 10 looks super cool :O looking forward to it!)
I would love to see photographic evidence of the Actual Pigeon Collection Avoidance Tactic. :)
I envy Jet. He have a bunch of awesome pets and a sexy, muscular wife.
I’ve got house chickens and they actually have a chicken room (doubles as a reptile room but still.) My spoiled rotten cochin hen (think fattest, puffiest chicken alive) used to shove herself in to the little square enclosed bed area of a cat tower we have in the living room if I told her it is time to go to bed too early for her liking. The parallels in this comic freaked me out for a second. Turns out it’s just “all domestic birds are little shits.”
She could only be extracted by the rustling of a mealworm container. Like you’d think she’d have caught on eventually, she knew the words “time for bed” or when I was even TALKING about putting them up w/my wife so she’s obviously not dumb, but she fell for it every damn time. Those crispy proteins must be worth the risk I guess. Now I just scoop her up unannounced and put her away with a snack so she doesn’t pace the door grumbling until the sun starts setting.
“All birds are little shits” has been part of my real-world headcanon ever since one of my friends (who interned as a zookeeper) started telling me stories about birds in zoos.
I had one wish this week (that the raptors would be in the update) and it was granted
She just has to put the fluff-filled house into the Raptor Room, assuming it is a fuller room.
Also, I wonder how Coela is going to react to the new Dance Pigeon pokemon that was announced, once she’s recovered from SDCC
She said she can’t fit Princess through the door….
Glad to see you’re working on a series that high-profile. I’m sure you’ll leave your mark in a good way.
Also, so true of any animal. I’ve known chickens, cats, dogs, all of them have the one little hidey-hole to duck into that says ‘no. Can’t get me.’ This is perfect.
Love the star field in the background! It adds a level of awesome on top of the layer of hilarious.
So, does Jet have an even bigger egg-house thing that he can fit inside of? Because I can’t imagine another way of him teaching the raptors to do that.
Nitpick, but it should be a semi colon, not a comma in Jet’s line.
Also, the Fluffy Raptors are just so adorable~!
Lol.
“He’s got ten aliens-”
*Shows Cannonbolt*
Cannonbolt is the twelfth alien, and I’m guessing they’re going to kick out ghost freak from the get go, so they can have that Big Chill copy.
In all honesty, the lines seem too thin, the comedy seems already too slapstick.
“He’s running in a desert! How can we make that funny?” “Hit him with a cactus!”
“His grandpa is enjoying something! What should we do?” “Have him ruin it in the simplest way possible with the most cliché character possible!”
It’s easy to tell they’re going to flanderize him so hard by this point that I’m cringing just thinking about it… I must be too old for this stuff, you can’t just have nice old things? Huh? This is gonna be like that stupid Disney show 7D, I’d bet… Counting on you Coelasquid, you’re great, your jokes are great, but unless they 180 this show’s theme and make it the new adventure time… I’d probably not put it on your future résumé.
I doubt it would benefit my career much to pretend that I didn’t work on a multibillion dollar action comedy franchise.
Makes sense. Business people tend to focus first and foremost on how much of a profit any venture made or can make over, well, everything else about it. “90% of the viewers hated this crap and we’re a laughingstock because of it.” “Well, the other 10% spent a shitload of money on it. Stamp it a massive success and start production on the next 6 sequels.”
In the original continuity, Cannonbolt was the eleventh alien. Wildvine was the twelfth
I’m going to guess Jared had something to do with this. He’s the real teacher of this little ‘combat maneuver’. And that just makes this even cuter.
And Jet would claim he taught this maneuver to his own raptor himself when he didn’t, why exactly? :)
Coelasquid do you perhaps know why that show has had so many reboots in such a short period?
This is the first time it’s been rebooted, the other series were all continuations of the original story.
The rumor I head, the reason is to screw over the voice actors.
After a certain number of episodes, the voice actors get paid a much higher amount. But if the series gets canceled and rebooted, TECHNICALLY the show isn’t going beyond a certain number of episodes…
I know I never questioned it before, but as a female raptor shouldn’t Princess have more subdued coloration? She’d need to guard the nest and all.
They’re all fancy designer raptors. Maybe she’s got some Eclectus parrot in her.
So she would, by Jurassic World rules, have the power to control parrots.
PETS PETS PETS! Pets look weird.
And I mean gender roles are not rigid throughout the animal kingdom. Swans are bright white either way (unless they’re black). Male seahorses are just as pretty as the females. Females hyenas are bigger and more impressive than males. We don’t have any idea how breeding worked with raptors.
Depending on how long her ancestors had been domesticated, it could be a natural mutation. There was a long term study done in the former USSR where they took a bunch of wild foxes and breed them for aggression or calmness in order to study dog domestication. For the calm foxes, it didn’t take many generations for them to develop different colouring and behaviours such as going into heat. I’ll post the Wikipedia article, but I also learned it from a baby’s first Neuroscience course. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Domesticated_Red_Fox
Predators are usually colorblind (easier to see through camoflage, having more rod and less cone cells in the eye means a sharper image), so the actual color may not matter quite as much…
Blegh, can’t edit. *Many* predators are colorblind. I’m just going with that theory about the dinosaurs, because you can’t prove otherwise and it’s the spacefuture and maybe they were bred that way?
I was too old to care about Ben 10 the first time around much less a reboot now but you are never too old for fluffy raptors.
Never get tired of these raptors.
At what point will you update the banner for the site to include Princess? Because she belongs on there!
I’m so excited for the new Ben10, it looks like it’s gonna be great!
Also laughing over the, “hey Coel, just wanted to pop in on your Web comic that you entertain us with for free to tell you that I think the show you’re putting your sweat into is shit because I’m a genwunner and you should be totally cool with my opinion!”
Man.
Just.
:| You nerds need to learn some social skills.
What I want to know is, is that Coelasquid drawing in the video?
I have a mohawk, a nose ring, a Bruce Campbell jaw, and I dress like the Fonz got stuck in a Mad Max movie.
You are the coolest person I’ve ever heard of
Am I the only one to connect the “!” Exclamation Point, and the fact that this Toothy Rooster decided to use a Box of Sorts to elude capture by the enemy? (Ignoring the fact that it did not entirely work.)
I’ve always loved Ben 10 throughout years. It really resonates with the kid in me, especially with the alien designs they have. And by the looks of this very short clip, the designs seem to have transferred to this art style pretty well, which I’m glad about. It still feels Ben 10 from a visual perspective, albeit with a more humorous and round twist. So writing and gags aside, I’m interested to see what’s in store.
I can’t look at the first panel and not hear a Metal Gear-esque alert noise.
so cute
The raptors are adorable and one of the biggest things that keep drawing me back to the comic. I would happily read an entire series about ththese adorable babies. Bird babys? Birbies….. raptor-dad birbies. There we go!
baby bird = chick >.>
Don’t know if you’re into the pokemon fusion thing, but your raptors remind me of bigger, smarter, deadlier slowgeys. :)

I love the raptors, and that you gave them personalities. Princess apparently hates being told to go to bed. They’re their fussy children!
Best of luck on the upcoming Ben 10 reboot, it looks awesome. I’ll have to check it out when it airs. =)
I sure hope I am not going to start associating the sounds of pigeons nesting with “there’s a raptor perched above me”. The only thing I can see in this comic is a raptor going pigeon-mad in a plastic bowl-nest thingy, the other actors are there only to make it happen. It’s so weird.
Your fluffy raptors always make me smile. :D
Man I can’t believe your working on the new Ben 10 show! I’m not gonna lie, at first the art style wasn’t my favourite but just seeing the animated parts makes it look a whole lot better. I hope you have a good time working on the show!
Sooooo… all this shitstorm about Ben 10, and everyone seemed to overlook princess (the raptor) looks more squishy and fluffy, and overall adorable inside that capsule
I just really hope the Ben 10 reboot doesn’t end up like ‘Teen Titans Go’. Because the original Teen Titans cartoon was so good and the reboot was so bad. And the old teen titans art was similar to the original Ben 10, and the new Teen Titans Go art is similar to the new Ben 10. And the new Teen Titans Go is supposed to be more comedy-focused, and yet is less funny.
If velociraptors were anything like chickens,
there’d be a whole lot more poop
everywhere.
Can someone tell me what video game these raptors are from
None, they’re my raptors.
