We’ve all been there

I had a super chill weekend where I didn’t have work standing on my neck for once and basically had to be pried out of bed with a crowbar to draw something in time for this update hahaha
I shall now describe all health and exercise related powders as “buff dust”.
I’ve just opened a new can of fruit punch flavored BCAA. It’s gonna be my new buff dust!
Is that the Scivation brand one? That’s what I’ve got on hand right now.
It’s like fairy dust with muscles
It only works when you think manly thoughts.
Jorgen Von Strangle would agree/ approve.
Aha! That’s who we’re missing! Jorgen Von Strangle needs to show up sometime.
“It’s like fairy dust with muscles” sounds like a new Powerthirst slogan. XD
Thankfully, I’ve either figured it out or read enough of both that I don’t do that anymore with either Wikipedia or TVTropes.
Or does you? BUM BUM BUMMMMM
Well, as for myself I’ve just created enough of a tolerance on TV Tropes that I don’t get sucked in. For me what worked was not reading the Tropes directly but looking up a movie or something and reading the tropes on that.
Is that sort of like how you cut a drug with something to make it less pure and easier to avoid overdosing?
The secret is to have read so much TV Tropes that there’s no links left that make you wonder what they’re about.
That way lies Madness.
Nope.
It is done!
I must find some books listed under xenofiction.
As long as you don’t cut it and end up with Twilight Xeno Fan Fiction.
It’s true that way lies madness, but in that madness, you may join me, and many others, in gaining the pure knowledge of tropes.
Well, after you’ve built up your endurance and/or self-discipline at TVTropes & Wikipedia, check out how you fare at the SCP Foundation too…
:D
I’ve read sections of that, too. Sadly, a huge number of titles just don’t seem interesting…
My out was eventually just to overdose on a purer version of the TV Tropes drug. It didn’t work and now I’m a straight up poststructuralist with an interest in Jungian psychology.
TVTropes is so much worse than Wikipedia. Wikipedia usually bore me like homework. In TVTropes you are reading about tv shows, movies, videogames, and comics. I’ve spent hours there with multiple tabs open.
The very first time I visited TVTropes was back in 2009 before they started to organize pages more and merge stuff. It took me three days to finally close all of my tabs on my browser just from surfing the Yuri subgenre pages. My god, so many manga and video games and movies with little innuendos I totally missed out on back when I was a kid. I also discovered so many amazing indie horror fiction scenes (That now sadly are mostly all gone, RIP Weeping Willow Press) and little things that flew under the radar.
That’s just the site. When you see those innuendos, you then end up researching the whole series just to find them.
Ah, 2009 era TV Tropes. I’m still angry that those philistines renamed “Golden Helmet of Mambrino” to “Mock guffin”.
Been there, done that.
Not pleasant when you find out you’ve spent entire day on wikipedia/TVtropes…
I was about to say “Also applicable to TV Tropes” until I saw your comment.
It’s not really that hard to understand. Creatine is something already present in your muscles – if your muscles are your “guns,” then the creatine is the ammo locked and loaded when you first start exercising, to keep the guns firing while additional supplies get brought in via the supply lines (the blood).
A few decades ago they decided to see what would happen if athletes consumed pure creatine, instead of just the creatine present in muscle meat when they ate beef/chicken/pork/etc. And… the results were pretty impressive.
Yeh, not hard to understand, but when you have no prior knowledge of it, and get curious… you could end up like that XD
thank you
Love the way you put it. “Guns”
Almost. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the ammo.
Creatine is your speedloader.
Although, funnily enough, ATP which gets used to fuel everything is never involved with the muscle contracting part. It’s used to pump calcium into a separate area, calcium releases later and THAT makes the muscle contract, and ATP is used to relax the fibers and ‘re-cock’ the working bits. But it has nothing directly to do with the flexing step.
Eating creatine isn’t very manly is it? Should be building up that muscle in more natural ways.
I think the bulge on my belly is pure creatine.
The bulge on my belly is caffinated pizza.
LOL same here
Done somewhat the same, started reading about Verdun.
Six and a half hours later I was reading about the practical implementation of quantum tunnelling from a theoretical standpoint…
One time I wanted to find out how deep sperm whales dived during my lunch. I think they turned the lights out on me some time around the Eastern Front of WWII. (Spoiler –
pretty deep, and pretty bloodyl.)
For some reason the last couple of wikiwalks I’ve done ended up at the Mutiny of the Lash
Oh man, thanks God. I thought I was a weirdo for getting lost in Wikipedia and TVtropes. Now I know I’m not a lone weirdo.
It is so common it has a term.. a Wikiwalk.. and I think we all have done it at some point
Oh, dude… It’s so common that it’s *actually* trope (I apologise in advance)
Huh…looks like the link might not be as visible as I expected. Oh, well…assuming this all gets past the mod, it’ll be a fun treasure hunt. :p
This the link you’re looking for.

Yay for super chill weekend!
Wikipedia and TV Tropes art like the third and fourth greatest time sinks on the internet. The first is probably still social media like Facebook. And II would likely be not so much online games as something akin to YouTube where you’re watching video after video any sort of streaming video service cuz you can look up and suddenly realize I just binge watch 32 episodes of the 52 episode series and I should have been out of the house 6 hours ago.
Social Media’s only dangerous if you’re social. The other two will get you if you have any interests at all.
The SCP Foundation will devour copious amounts of time as well. It should be ranked up there, methinks.
SCP is news to me I do not know what it is.
They always call it wiki-hell but it’s more like a limbo with characteristics of all.
I mean, you’re learning new things and it’s all wonderful, heaven right there.
On the other hand, you’re almost compulsively going through article after article and you’ve passed the point of actually being entertained a while ago. It’s more eternal busywork than torment or peace.
And once you look at how badly you messed up your schedule, that’s really when the hell kicks in.
Off-topic thought:
Where’s the office located? I’m 97% it’s America but I’m guessing with the everything-you-can-think-of-is-true way the universe is built, the location would be something like Beefstreet 27, Freedomtown in Eaglestate.
Or it’s just downtown Seattle or something and I’m overthinking this.
Side note, good to see Jared is still doing his workouts. Based on where they’re sitting I’m guessing they went for a morning jog? Crazy to think Commander got a typical adolescent like Jared to wake up early and do exercise.
Pretty sure it’s downtown Seattle. I’ve been through there, pretty sure I see these guys on a regular basis.
Too bad it’s a laptop with a four-hour battery!
Just unplug the internet modem.
Nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
For the curious:
http://www.menshealth.com/health/creatine-side-effects-what-it-is-what-it-does
That site demands me look at commercials, how rude.
Very.
We’ve all fallen down the rabbit hole, whether it be wikipedia or tumblr or TV tropes. I feel this.
Is the Commander turning Jared into a miniature version of himself?
Pretty sure Commander would rather Jared try to learn from him directly rather than get hurt trying to emulate him on his own. He’s kinda paternal like that (albeit surrogately in this case)
Speaking of rabbit holes, Coelasquid have you checked out Pyre? Even if you don’t have time/cash for the game I thought the art & design was something you’d be interested in. Particularly the characters Jodariel and Bertrude.
Even if Jones did come to unplug it, it looks like the commanders computer is a laptop and thus will have a battery they will have to wait for to run out before they escape.
That’s when you unplug the internet modem.
There is a drawback to the joy of learning. TV Tropes will ruin your life.
Is this the prelude to Jared getting buff and becoming an official member of the macho agency?
I would think Jared is an “official” member of the macho agency since somewhere between trashing animatronic horrors at Freddy’s and beating up skull gang kids (not sure which came first). Being buff is not a prerequisite here, ridiculous over-the-top pretentious manliness is.
I think it’s beautiful that people can get trapped in learning. Sure, it’s mostly trivial knowledge, but it’s still knowledge. Our nature is to be curious, and those sites are pure curiosity traps.
Creatine is a powdered, organic crystal of the energies present at the beginning of the Universe, magically attuned to help grow new things. Literally crystalINE CREATion.
The More You Know
Since everything is made out of ancient space dust this is technically true
Username checks out.
Ingredients: Hydrogen, Time
Oh man, this cracked me up :D
O M G I’ve done the same thing (I work at a gym), stupid arcane buff dust XD
So is that normal wikipedia, or like… FUTURE wikipedia?
I’m glad that Jared still goes working out with the Commander. Keep at it! Dedication makes progress.
Wow – it was black and white this morning and already colored. +1 to you
One of my favorite jokes you’ve done lately. Good set up and excellent punch line.
My new favorite strip. Probably because I’ve both done this and been asked to pull people out of these situations.
Man, hilarious comic AND the wonderful news that you’re finally getting some time to breath! Thanks for making Monday great, Coelasquid.
We have all been there at one time or another. They at least have a friend to help them escape.
Pardon my ignorance but what are the r’ standing for in the second panel?
I think it is or pronounced with an accent. And most likely meant to be ‘r.
“Or”.
or
I’m guessing it’s an or with the ‘ on the wrong side. But that’s just a theory.
Just an or. It’s represented as an ‘r because that’s a way of showing the audience the way in which Commander speaks.
It’s because Commander Badass is a pirate. He once had perfect elocution until he illegally pirated The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and it’s forever tainted him. We don’t bring it up much because he’s really sensitive about it.
I love many things about this comic strip, but I wish to call attention to two things in particular. The first is that Wikipedia is a black hole and I have wasted far more hours on there than I’d care to admit, and the second is that I love that egg design on Jared’s shirt. Bit of a callback to that last time it showed him working out and he was using the stair stepper to hatch eggs for people.
Yup. One time I went to look up something for school at 8pm and ended up looking at echidnas and other monotremes at 3am.
Ohhh way too relatable XD
Pretty sure that if Jared bulked up, at best he’d look like a pair of nylons filled with baseballs.
He could look rather nice actualy.
Wow, you have a bedside crowbar attendant? I could use one of those…
Curious about hair growth, by the end of the night I know everything about diode lasers.
It’s a real thing.
Now introduce them to Tv Tropes, they wont get out alive.
I would pay good money to see the dudes in the office looking up themselves on T.V Tropes. Hilarity/actual character development could easily come from it (kinda like when Marv preferred to stay Anime Pretty)
Literally the first thought upon seeing this – before I even noticed the comic title – was “Christ, I’ve been there dude.”
I regularly go on TV Tropes to research movies and games. But at any given time when I’m online, there are no less than six tabs waiting for me to look over, after I’ve binged One Punch Man or some Zero Punctuation’s Let’s Plays.
Ah, the dreaded Wikiloop. It’s bad on the ‘Pedias, but I think TVTropes is quite possibly the most dangerous.
“Time for bed! But first, I’ll just look up what this one trope is called and why do i have thirty tabs open and an alarm clock going off?”
TVTropes.org…
I haven’t suffered this with Wikipedia, but TVTropes is a trap from which you can never escape.
The three stages of getting lost on the internet:
1) Wikipedia – Already going to hell, might as well learn something from it.
2) TV Tropes – BRIAN BLESSED ISN’T MENTIONED ENOUGH HERE!
3) Fandom Wikis – You ain’t getting your soul back.
It’s a laptop, they’ll still be stuck for a few hours, depending on battery life! D:
pretty much sums up how i ended here…
My worst wiki binge was 3 days straight. I was dealing with injuries, and the pain kept me up, and just got sucked in.
Oh God or whatever else you believe in bless you for wikijoke.
