In which I find out how many of my readers have seen Donnie Darko

Donnie Darkoverse time travel rules state that tangent universes created by time travel are unstable and will eventually collapse on themselves. In honour of the official timeline Nintendo released, which has THREE tangent universes on the go, old tired Ganondorf finds a new way to get in Link’s head.
Commander’s time travel operates on the ambient bullshitium in the universe and as such maintains a tangent-free timeline.

Frank had elephant-like teeth?:D can’t realy remember…
nice one btw.
it’s a boar-demon-Ganon version of the mask with horns and tusks instead of a bunny one.
A bunny one? When was he ever a demon boar bunny? Are we talking about the cartoonish version?
Link turned into a rabbit, Gannon turned into a pig. So it’s appropriate.
Oh. The Bunny Ears hood. Now I understand.
I recommend watching Donnie Darko first.
Ugh, that string of comments was torture to read.
To answer your question, Coelasquid, no. Not many of us have seen Donnie Darko, apparently.
Seen it and it was awesome.
Sweet lord this is awful…although the mistaken correlation between bunny hood and boar Ganon was quite humorous.
Link turns into a Bunny in Link to the Past, in the Dark World without a specific item to help him out.
No, no. The original Donnie Darko used a bunny mask, and instead of that mask Ganondorf is using a demon-boar one. Nobody said that Ganondorf was ever a demon boar bunny; how did you even get that?
I never saw the movie so I didn’t even know it had a bunny mask.
You missed out babe
Not really, the movie is excruciatingly overrated with no real value beyond the demon rabbit.
The Demon Rabbit is why it is NOT overrated. :P
Agreed
could you somehow not care about your friend or girlfriend sacrificing themselves for you? then turning around and finally growing a pair and saying “look, im stopping this, i will die instead”. if not, you and me need to have a party.
I don’t know what anyone’s ratings would do to affect the quality of anything, but I’ll say Donnie Darko is a movie unlike any other and worth watching if only so you can make up your own mind about how good it is and what it’s about.
I’ll also recommend anyone reading this who have watched the movie to a) try to get a hold of The Philosophy of Time Travel and b) stay well away from S.Darko.
So anyway I find it interesting that Link recognizes the “masked-future-doom-prophet” motif from Donnie Darko well enough to be immediately freaked out. Has the movie had that widespread an impact on the popular consciousness? Or is he such a fan of the movie that it’s never far from his mind?
Masks and future dates.
I think Link has seen all he needs to see to make the connection.
I actually enjoyed S.Darko. But I was drinking a lot back then…
…Huh.
That’s…that’s actually really creepy. I feel for Link.
For all that Mr. G has been through, I say to let him have his little victories. After so long, the monotony needs to to have a little spice added.
‘B’ eh? Is that short for Bro or does the Commander have a name we don’t know about?
Derp! Commander Badass of course!
‘B’ is just urban slang we use to address each other with, at least where I’m from we do. Rappers use it a lot too.
The one and only time I’ve ever heard anyone refer to anyone else by “B”, and it having to do with rap, is in 8 Mile. everyone calls Eminems character “B”, which I figured was short for Bunny, since everyone calls him B Rabbit.
Maybe its for boss, because the commander is his boss
I’m going with “Boss”, too.
Go right ahea,d but it’s B for ‘Badass’. As in ‘Commander Badass’. Remember?
This is amazing. Loving the freaky Ganon-Frank. ♥
This sounds like a perfect excuse to start speculating on the Commander’s first name.
I’m shooting for Melvin, out of pure irony.
I was thinking Merwin or Leland.
Huh. Commander Leland Badass has a nice ring to it. congrats!
Sue.
That might explain why he’s so tough. After all, life ain’t easy for a boy name Sue. . .
unless they are a mary sue
His first name is `Commander’, clearly.
Commander Dieffenbaker Badass
+5 for canadian-ness!
His full name is Commander Leroy ‘Badass’ Jenkins
This is so full of Awesomeness!!!
This is great! I love Ganon’s quip “Just let me have this.” A great way to start my day, searching the internet for a certain monster costume…
This is one fan who not only has seen Donnie Darko, but drew a cartoon movie review of the feature.
Ganon looks so gleeful as he’s pulling that mask out.
Ahhh Donnie Darko. The film you have to watch about 4 times to even start understanding what just happened. Such as it was that it was a Sleeper Hit (meaning they thought it was gonna flop then BANG! it got HUGE)
And you know you have a problem when you go; B – B-man – Batman – WTF commander is Batman?!
No, no. I got donnie darko the first time watching it. what REALLY takes about 8 reruns to get is primer. and i love both of those sleeper hit movies.
And of course this comic :) upcoming: chronicle looks like it has potential (even though its kind of a rip off of both akira and freak angels) as well as prometheus and rcvr.
If you watch the director’s cut there are little scene bumpers with excerpts from the time travel book he’s reading that explain what’s going on.
which movie are you referring to? that could be either one. it took me a few times to notice abe (i think) reading excerpts, but i definitely noticed the earplugs with future prompting audio even the first time. and this just makes me want to watch time after time again. r.i.p. christopher reeves.
I did appreciate the Director’s Cut for those excerpts, plus it looks very nice, but I still prefer the original for the soundtrack.
You think that was a mind screw, you should see memento
I did, and again, i understood it just fine the first time. Trinity was still hawt as all hell in that movie, and the tattoo thing was a very nice touch. For some oddball reason, only primer has ever given me trouble understanding every nook and cranny of its intent. I’m fairly observant, at least when i’m interested in something, and having worked at a videostore when they still existed and had free access to movies, it is kind of hard to pull plot twists over on me now.
I could stand to watch the poisoners handbook again though, and a few french flicks i can barely remember the titles of. Also the first true suburbia. The real punk one. And i at least can never get tired of doom generation.
Memento was good, but not that hard to understand. When you had understood the time-travel rules for Donnie Darko, then it was cake.
No, whats HARD to understand is Perfect Blue and Paprika, but it’s possible to understand them with time.
Then you watch Millenium Actress.
Thank you ever so much for mentioning 3 movies i’ve never even heard of, but am sure to enjoy at least one out of three. I am suspicious that one may be anime though ..
But the fun is in finding out. Nice godlike nickname too.
I know for Perfect Blue and Paprika. they are anime…and you have to watch them like 3 times to understand…i know donnie darko too, it’s one of my favorite movies with Paprika.
you kind of sound like you don’t like anime. it’s ok for me, but i read your post and you sound like someone who really likes great stories. i think yu should pass on the idea that they are anime and just enjoy them because i know you will like them both. :)
-sorry if my english is bad, i’m a french speaker.-
merci boucoup? thanks for enlightening me. ok then, it has been YEARS since i’ve seen perfect blue, and non, i LOVE ANIME. have been a fan since gatchaman/g-force. perfect blue was the one where the girl has all of those bizzarre fantasies and it turns out she has an alternate personality, i remember now. I will go find paprika and millenium actress then as well. I did have a little trouble with evangelion, and i refused to watch higurashi after a certain point because it finally just GOT TO ME. (shudder) but thats my problem, i find it way too easy to identify or submerge myself into a story. thank you!
Umm… the girl in Perfect Blue is a pop-idol who quits to become an actress. And has disgruntled fans. She doesn’t really have fantasies, she just loses the ability to distinguish between fantasy and reality because she’s acting in rape/horror/trauma movie scenes while someone is stealing her identity online with her old pop-idol persona and people who taint her reputation are getting murdered. And it wasn’t an alternat personality. Her best friend/manager was the impersonating her and causing all the trouble.
kid after you’ve seen the amount of anime i have, it’s a wonder i’m not confusing great mazinger with captain harlok.
I love Link’s expression. And Commander’s bullshitium. And you, for reminding me of another one thing I wanted to see but forgot to put it on a list.
Thank you!
I love your comment Coel: Bullshitium is the best element name ever.
I have long felt that most of the universe is made out of this substance.
I still feel sorrier for Mario than Link: in his various universes, nookie is replaced by cake.
This is why the princess is always inviting Mario over for cake, and why Mario is so fat.
True fact, no bullshitium at all.
If that’s true, then just what was Mario doing when he fed cake to the Gourmet Guy in Paper Mario?
Going through an experimental phase?
Because it was a lie.
I want to be a comic book villain and harness bullshitium to expand every continuity error and plot holes in game plots.
I do imagine it gets very tiring being a recurring villain. This is one of my favorite comics of yours. XD
Awesome page, I love that film so much, and I don’t see any point in Nintendo releasing a timeline, its all so messed you might as well just wave it away with ‘parallel universes!’ Wooo! *ghosty noise*
Donnie Darko reference! One of my favorite movies! Poor Link! xDD
Hahaha! YES Gandarko!
The funny thing is, this is probably not too far off the truth, the way the Zelda series has been going lately. ;) Nicely done!
Poor link is going to get killed by a falling bird… or the other crap they drop off skyloft
What is the Commander eating? Guessing it’s some pastry, considering they just came out of Starbucks, but it looks suspiciously like to seasame hamburger buns with nothing in the middle.
A bagel. Which is… kind of a less roundabout word for “sesame hamburger bun with nothing in the middle”.
No, bagels are boiled sesame hamburger buns will nothing in the middle.
And now I feel incredibly silly for not seeing this earlier. Also, going to go make a bagel cheeseburger now, because I hate my arteries.
And by ‘nothing in the middle’, I meant that it didn’t look like it had any sort of filling. Not the obvious.
cheddar bagel, with deli-sliced roast beef and pepper jack. just a bit of miracle whip…
god i’m hungry…
also, ganon-frank is my new idol.
Ohohohohoo~ I liked this one. I haven’t seen Donnie Darko but I got the reference thanks to Tim Minchin.
poor link :D
Hey, you gotta find your purpose where you can. It must be hard setting out to make a better life for your subjects then having them die out while you’re sealed away in limbo.
Also viable: hiding near Link and announcing in a low voice, “Three days remaining.”
Link and Jared have such expressive features to show panic that I find myself laughing at their terror. Thank you for making me a sociopath :P
The idea of old tired Ganondorf screwing with Link’s head makes me so damn happy, and that’s before I get to the ‘with a Donnie Darko-style mask’ part. XD “Just let me have this.” Happily, G, happily.
Bullshitium makes the world go round again! :D
I’m just greatful this comic isn’t made of unobtainium.
If Ganondorf is G-Man then who is G-Man?
They are the Members of the Road Crew, the Hedge Trimmers, the Housewife Gardeners, the Housewife Homemakers, the Grieving Widows, the Sewer Workers, the Phone Repairmen, the Helicopter Pilot, the Assassins.
But they are not The Milkman.
I actually meant the G-Man from Half Life, but Psychonauts works too.
I know. I just couldn’t help myself.
No regrets.
All of a sudden I have the mental image of the demon boar Gannon saying “I’m not a bunny! I’m not!”
The villain’s lament.
The most beautiful phrase in the English language is “cellar door”…
Ganondorf totally looks like the Krampus there.
I love you for knowing who that is.
Holy crap, I thought the same thing when I saw that! Now I’m wondering if Krampus is going to show up in this comic or not.
Link’s face when.. X3
The Triforce of Courage have very low requirements, it seems…
My buddies and I agreed with the various aphorisms about courage and bravery being the mental strength to stand up against one’s fears and tackle great dangers in spite of every neuron in the brain screaming, “Run away! Run away! Keep running!”
…granted, we also agreed that he has to have some insane PTSD going on, what with getting devoured by giant whales and fighting through its guts, getting facehumped by vampiric mummies, getting wrenched about by shifting gravity fields (Hello, Forest Temple!) among other horrors and traumas, and that’s just in one game!
and the stress of dealing with the water temple…
and repeatedly going back and forth through puberty….
To be fair, he DID sleep through it every time but the last.

It always disturbs me when people try to connect a series of video games with no continuity between them and churn out a nonsensical “timeline” to them. I mean, jeez, they’re VIDEO GAMES.
It’s even worse when the companies who made them try this. Remember when Square pulled this crap with Final Fantasy and apparently ten was a prequal to seven? Somebody in the company cared enough to come up with that. Somebody important enough to get that info into something you payed for.
Except Zelda ALWAYS had a time line. Starting with the first two which were directly connected. And honestly the three way time line makes sense if your a fan of series to piece together the clues. What fans didn’t think of was the concept of Link losing to Ganon in OoT, because that isn’t actually possible in the game. It doesn’t show a special game over screen showing Ganon continuing his rule it just says game over “continue?” and then places at the top of the crumbling castle.
Miyamoto has stated several times over the years that there is a timeline but its a company secret, that its in the Game “Bible” (term to used to described the dos and don’t of a particular piece of work)
But yes it isn’t needed to connect the games, because the games themselves are fun and mostly self contained. But there is a timeline.
Final Fantasy was always described as being games completely separate from each other with only similar themes and ideas being the connecting points. Unless otherwise stated within the games themselves (X-2, XIII-2, Crisis Core etc)
Except X and VII are in the same universe. Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega and Final Fantasy X-2 Ultimania prove it.
What about gilgamesh? He’s in every game, basically.
I don’t see why that’s a bad thing. Yes, they’re just video games. BUT. They’re stories. I think it’s cool that video game creators are becoming that invested in the plot and the stories they’re telling and how they fit together. All it means is in the future, people are going to plan better which means more cohesive series and thus better stories!
While I have not seen Donnie Darko, I can at least appreciate Ganondorf messing with Link’s head. Especially *your* characterizations of Ganny and Link.
Dude deserves it for breaking those pots!
I think I love Ganondorf more than I did before…………………
I have the same reaction. He was always the best thing to come out of the Zelda series, and Coelasquid’s usage of him makes me happy. <3
I have become convinced that I am not enough gamer to understand this comic. at all.
Or not enough of a cinema fan.
Oh god Ganondorf trolling Link is the best thing ever.
And now I’ve got that Tim MInchin song stuck in my head.
(This is not a bad thing)
I still haven’t gotten around to seeing Donnie Darko.
Unless you’re a huge fan of Drew Barrymore, Jake Gyllenhaal and want to see Seth Rogen in a very minor role as a bully, you don’t have to see it. Although it is probably one of the better “Halloween-type” movies, you’ll ever watch. It’s characterized as a “psychological thriller” but I wouldn’t be able to define it as such. I give it a 7/10 , though not because it’s necessarily “good” or “clever” but simply on the basis that it’s different and there’s nothing else I could compare it to.
That. was. so. fucking. awesome.
Marry me, C. Squiddy! Yeah, I’m a homo, and you have a vagina, but at least I won’t pester you for sex.
Oh Ganny, you’ve become so personable ever since you joined the agency! You’re adorable!
That was a bit wierd movie :D
The first time I tried Salvia, I was pulled by a Donnie Darko-esque worm hole into my living room, I really was falling the whole way, it was pretty snazztastic.
I saw a lot of deep verdant greens and dark purples. In latticework type patterns, I also heard someone whisper my name, then 3 of the 4 walls of my apartment gave way to vegetation. It was almost like where the wild things are.
Something was definitely tugging me in that direction, i didn’t get the falling to the left hand side most people do, just a general nudging in a direction.
But i stayed on my couch with my eyes close :) the whole thing is just what i imagined, yet i saw colours for damn sure. Interesting that you should post this today too, as i’m listening to terrance mckenna speeches on youtube. My experience wasn’t frightening at all, as a matter of fact it had an eerie feeling of “i’ve been here before”. And that was the first time ..
Also, this comic is essentially all of my favorite things, so thank you.
Ha! XD
Holy shit! Frank is Ganondorf!? It makes so much sense!!!!! :D
you know it eally does when you think about it
I love that the panel kind of gets grey-washed when he first puts on the mask. Very fitting.
I love seeing a villain win. More so when it is someone like Ganon, as in the Zelda games we really never know what kind of job the current royal house is doing, so we have no real proof that Ganon wouldn’t be a step up.
This isn’t really winning per se, more “fulfilling his in-and-out-of-universe obligations to be a dick to Link with the least effort possible”.
Speaking as a lazy man, that sounds like a win to me. When you can put no effort into something and still get credit for it, that is a sweet sweet win.

Et Tu, Brutus?-Julius Ceasar (Has nothing to do with war, really, I just wanted to add to the list of epic catch-phrases.)
This may be a reference to Donny Darko, but Link is making the same face I made after watching S. Darko…
(Also, this is one of my favorite comics! I look forward to it every week!)
Is this the 1000th comic? If so, awsome.
99th
Cool. So first comment on the next one gets the 100 kiriban! And grats to you for sticking with MGDMT for so long! *hug!*
Welll, that’s even creepier than the actual Frank mask.
Heh I remember everyone in my high school was into that movie, sequel is a pile of shit though.
Right, someone should get cracking on a modern Zelda, if only to officially have Ganondorf in a suit.
And Link is like the mailroom boy.
He learns that the evil Ganondorf has staged a hostile takeover of the company he works for, taking former CEO Zelda hostage, so Link decides to rise up and defend Hyrule Ruler Inc. (they make wooden measuring implements). Link has to find the Master Stapler, complete the Compass Force and then fight his way up management until he reaches the CEO, which is the epic boss battle just before his “I bounce the pink slip” stage with Ganondorf to win the game.
We can call it … Zelda: The Fight for More Office Space.
Hot damn i’d actually play that
After defeating Lumber– I mean Ganondorf– do you have to excape Inite– I mean Hyrule Ruler Inc. before the building burns down?
Is there a level where you must break open the cursed printer and unravel the mystery of the PC Load Letter?
Will there be a new item equip system where “pieces of flair” add to Link’s ever-expanding arsenal of medieval weaponry?
I trust the Master Stapler gives a +15 bonus to Link’s dexterity and filing speed attributes.
Hot damn, I wanna play this game too!
Flair would be an armor addition. It would be like … upgrading his shield or getting the armor that drains your ruppies. You could switch them out to do different things.
I would imagine his tools would be like a rubber band (to shoot paperclips at things), paper airplanes (to replace the boomerang/bug), coffee mugs (to hold various “potions”) and a mouse (to replace his hookshot). He’d have to learn passwords instead of songs/verses, find TPS reports and other collectables, and his mount would have to be a rolling desk chair and/or the mailcart.
Each level would include some sort of climbing puzzle that involves maneuvering through cubicles, climbing over filing cabinets and doing stunts that would compromise OSHA standards. Eliminating/avoiding lackies and security guards. Taking on middle management/consultant boss fights (if you’re using Office Space as a reference, think of the Bobs). Instead of fairies, it would probably be something more office-like … uh, how about good-looking interns?
That is too awesome to think of. And we shall call him “The Hero of Overtime Policy”. Also have those little toys with bobbing heads have faces that look like the Mask of Truth.
Hahaha. Bobbleheads. That’s almost too close to Fallout 3’s thing, but that would be hilarious. Collecting bobbleheads instead of gratitude crystals. Your reward is a bigger post-it pad (because post-it sheets are like rupees in an office environment).
I noticed the number for this comic was 1000.
It’s the 99th strip, I don’t know what the url numbers actually refer to.
Flash the message,
“Something’s out there”
Floating in the summer sky(net)
99 Manly comics go by
Nice nina reference.
B-but the bunny should be the mailman! Or is Ganondorf suggesting…
Zelda crossovers I didn’t know I wanted:
– Ghostbusters
– Indiana Jones
–
*write write* Donnie Darko
Who didn’t suffer an “apocalyptic tangent reality trauma” after Ocarina? *shudder* Can’t sleep… moon will eat me. D:
Blah. Coding fail. *hides in shame*
Coding fail is one thing.
Confusing Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask is the TRUE shame.
~D.
LMAO! IKR? I didn’t realize it until hours later but then my ADD-ridden brain forgot by the time I got back home. As to why I didn’t comment until now… A good mix of embarrassment and ADD. XD
YES. Hahahaha THIS IS BRILLIANT.
Funny, I just saw this movie not too long ago.
I must be omniscient! Does this mean the next comic will reference Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure?
I always preferred that future to the one in BttF. In B&T George Carlin and Clarence Clemons are alive again. With some sweet 80s music by Robbi Robb.
As Ganondorf is still my favorite Zelda character, I fully approve this strip and everything in it.
I’m more inclined to follow any Zelda timeline that doesn’t include Majora’s Mask as canon. Stupid game came out when I was ten years old. Ten! Do you know what that terrifying apocalyptic shit does to a tiny young ten year old’s mind? Not even mentioning that Young Link is canonically about eleven so the entire time I played it I kept thinking HE IS MY AGE THIS COULD BE ME. No, I’d really prefer to think that whole game just never happened. Maybe it was a dying dream he made up in his final moments because holy shit OoT was bad enough, why do we need to keep torturing this child.
Also thanks for getting Mad World stuck in my head.
You clearly havent played the Zelda CDI the ‘terrifying apocalyptic shit’ fails in comparison to whats in that shit.
S….Q…..U…..A……D…..A……L…….A………..
YOU MUST DIE!!!
Here…is THE MAP! Where, do you wish to go?
SQUADALA!!! We’re off!!!
Ganondorf’s face in the third panel really got to me.
And then his expression in the fourth panel got to me in an entirely different and much more glee-inducing way.
Oh you, Ganondorf. Oh you.
Can we expect more from Ganondorf?
I hope so, I just love Coalesquid’s characterization of him :D
Anyone know if there’s a higher quality/bigger picture of suit-ganny? Cause that would make one badass avatar!
I really need to see that movie. XD this was pretty funny regardless of my having seen it, though.
Is that a Half Life reference in the first panel?
Nah I think that’s just ganondorfs nickname
I think that’s most people’s reaction to rapture or some made up false dooms day. XD I’m going to side with Ganon on this. He’s been pretending to be evil for so long, he’s need something or someone to laugh at :D
I will forever love your take on Ganondorf.
What happens when the ambient bullshittium reaches 0.89?
Okay, I have been reading this for some time, and found many of them very funny. But this is the first time I have ever made a comment on any of them.
And all I can say is I found this one EPIC! *Put’s a quarter in the commander’s epic jar* Sorry for the language but it this one was just to good. It just had me laughing my ass off, I have never seen the Donnie Drako movie, never even heard of it before now but now will be watching it just because of this comic. All I can say is grate job on it, I hope you keep this comic going for along time. It’s one of the things I look forward to most in the week.
Heh. Knew it was a Donnie Darko reference before I even saw the title :D
And now I need to watch that movie again.
I thought it looked like the rabbit and then when i saw your description bricks started falling out my bum. I thought i was the only movie hipster who actually enjoyed that movie
Ganon looks like he’s one of the agency’s success stories. Running around in a suit apparently functioning well in ‘normal’ society yet still efficiently fulfilling his nemesis obligations.
Also goes to prove the old psychologist’s maxim: to help a patient successfully, the patient must WANT to be helped.
It’s been years since I saw that movie (with the extra scenes no less). Will Link be manipulated to destroy property afterwards?
in fact, link IS manipulated to destroy properties…like pots. You have the remote. ;)
Just when I thought Manly Guys Doing Manly Things couldn’t get better, you pull Donnie Darko in.
Thank you so much. I love you and your work.
Bullshittium: part of the Unreal Periodic table, along with Handwavium and Phlebotinum.
You forgot Unobtainium.
So I did! Thank you for reminding me.
I do love me some Frank!!! 8D
I love you D:
Hooray for Donnie Darko references. I watched it in school one because it was the end of the school year. It was somewhat confusing but still entertaining. They also made a sequel starring his sister. Forgot the name however.
Thats probably for the best, the sequal was atrocious.
of course, i take statements like this with a grain of salt, because about 99% of the time its just fanboys complaining…they always do that with sequals…HOW DARE IT BE DIFFERENT!!!…i have seen neither movie however, so you could very well be right…
Well, and i think a lot of this very audience would agree with me, you kind of owe it to yourself to at least see the first one: donnie darko. On top of it being a very good movie, perhaps even an intellectual one, it has a slammin soundtrack.
Koyaanisqatsi…
have you seen the sequels?
Sometimes i seriously doubt your commitment to sparkle motion!
Link’s face is priceless. And GanonFrank is wonderful.
Yeah, i remember that reality, creepiest zelda game. I don`t want talk about it.
So Coelasquid are you going to play Abobo’s Big Adventure?
<3 Two of my favorite things in this comic right here.
Also, I love your Ganondorf. LOVE. He needs to be seen in a suit more often.
Ganondorf pimp. That would be something.
awww poor link xD he looks mortified!! Ganon came across so down an depressed until you see him take the mask out xD love it :P
hahaha! a combination of two great things, Donnie Darko and Legend of Zelda
So many timelines! I think this is hilarious.
Is it sad that i spent a good min or two trying to figure out the date Gannon’s holding until finally i realized there are too many numbers?
Days-hours-minutes-seconds. In the film, Frank shows up to Donnie him how long it would be until the tangent universe collapsed.
see, the first thing I thought of when I saw this was donnie darko, but I didn’t actually recognize frank from this :P now I’m imagining link in the movie doing the things donnie did…rofl
Never seen Donnie Darko or played any of the Zelda games. First thing I thought of was a possible boss out of Majora’s Mask, even though I never played it.
Link kinda deserves it for not replacing the flower pots he broke… and attempting to steel gems from them if they contained any.
Steal
Why you gotta traumatize us like that? :(
Coelasquid, you must jade my day.
*made
you must made…
*just * made
How do you jade one’s day anyway?
play mortal combat, select jade, die by fatality. day successfully jaded.
if religious, play while wearing jade prayer beads, and lose anyways.
become divinely jaded. if otaku, create manga about entire experience named jademan.
oh, wait.
Hahahahaha, that made me laugh.
Why does he wear that stupid bunny suit?
Why do you wear that stupid human suit?
Did they release a new timeline because of Skyward Sword? Last I saw was the two-split one because of OoT continuity. Did they really add a third? Nintendo, I am disappoint… *goes to find the new official timeline*
Skyward Sword takes place long *before* the split, so it doesn’t really have an effect on any of the lines.
The gist of it is that the first four Zelda games, as well as the Oracle pair, take place in a What If timeline where Link just completely sucked at life in OoT and failed to stop Ganondorf. Apparently it’s canon now that you got a Game Over at some point.
Yeah, I was checking the timeline. Apparently it’s the only “official” one that was released, and it was released just after SS came out, so I assumed there was a timeline split BECAUSE of SS.
Turns out Nintendo just fuckin’ sucks at timelining things. The “Game Over” split is absolutely terrible…
I don’t think they really started trying to keep things on a timeline until after OoT. Other than the first two, which I believe were directly related to each other. After OoT became the cultural movement it was for video games, Nintendo got very adamant about making sure people knew exactly how every big console release that followed related to it. So the “failed hero” branch was just an easy place to shuffle the games that didn’t easily fit in the adult Link/kid Link divergent timeline.
The upside to all this is that I’ve officially stopped caring about the timelines and have learned to enjoy each game for what it is.
And as a side note, I would really love if the term Game Over Split caught on.
I never understood Donnie Darko. :(
My friend brought his laptop into the woods with us when we went camping along with the film, took me a while to go to sleep that night over the fear of becoming crazy and seeing large rabbits!
Ganon shouldn’t have done that.
You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?
Wh…
……donnie darko…….. WHY!? DX
;A; GANONFRANK. OH GAWD.
I was so scared of Frank in that damn movie. asdf.
If Ganondorf, Zelda, and Link were all portrayed with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor approach to the series, I probably would’ve liked Skyward Sword. Of course, the delayed motion control making fights ten-time harder than they have to be would still be a turn off, but at least with a refreshed approach to the genre, the player might be more inclined to overlook that sort of thing. Glad to see Ganon still working to keep his sanity. I laughed my ass off.
That movie still irritates me. It was like a very interesting and intricate lead up to a magic trick, only to find out the magic trick is pulling a quarter from behind your ear.
At least he still knows how to have some fun.
Poor Link, can’t get a break. Ever.
Squiddy my dear, you are a BRILLIANT GENIUS for that Donnie Darko reference, I never would have thought of that relating to Zelda. XD Fuck yes.
the numbers come from donnie darko, i know that. but the first time i read the comic, i thought about the LOST numbers.
talking about lost in time, does commander badass drive a deLorean? just saying…
great webcomic btw. :)
Found a typo in panel 3 “turning into a giant pig and chasing magical teenagers AND just so i can get sealed off”.
Please dont hate me.
I am loving all the attention Ganon and Link are getting lately, but I must ask…so, what exactly is the whole 28-6-42-12 thing all about?
I typed the numbers in the Google search engine and it came up with a countdown:
28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds.
Not sure if it’s correct since I haven’t seen Darko, but given the apocalypse themes it seems to be the most logical explanation I can think of.
LOL!!!! poor link. i like your interpretation of the OoT ganon, colesquid. what you need to do is give ganondorf a partner like…the arbiter from halo wars.
This made my day…Great Job!
The one where the Commander has a mouthful of bagel in each panel
… Seriously? No one is going to ask?
Alrighty then, WHAT IN SAMS FUCKING HILL IS COMMANDER EATING?
Cause to me, he’s eating a hamburger bun.
AS A MANLY MAN MYSELF, THAT ISN’T ALL THAT MANLY.
It’s a sesame bagel, someone asked the first day. Why would a coffee shop sell hamburger buns?
Burgerbucks.
Meeting your coffee and burger needs since 1998.
I am absolutely in love how you draw Gannondorf. I don’t even care who he is (never played Zelda), I’d really like to see more of him.
Can’t wait to see you in Perth in a few weeks man.
Fi: I see that you are having a traumatic episode. I recommend finding a therapist. Would you like assistance in finding a therapist?
At least that’d be useful.
Not really. This is Link we’re talking about, the therapist would inevitably turn out to either be a bossfight or the start of a tedious sidequest.
Ganon looks so handsome. Still a huge fan of your work…
Although, I don’t remember, did you do anything with Gordon Freeman, or the G-man?
Because Gordon Freeman is easily the most badass nerd ever. :I
I know Freeman made an appearance in one of the guest comics back in 2010 but apart from that…
Now I’ve got an image of G-Man doing this to Freeman… His response would still be blank.
I’ll eventually stop laughing at this comic. Gahaha.
That is a really badass Frank you have there
…Also, those were tangent universes? I honestly can’t keep track, I thought it was just a fucked up timeline. But who even knows.
Now I know what my next Halloween costume gonna be ;)
Never been afraid of Ganny before…now I am.
Albeit the original Donnie Darko scared me as a kid too, so mayhaps some childhood fears welling up inside…
Totally should be a selectable mask in Majora’s Mask.
totally watched Donnie Darko and S. Darko for the first time cause of this. loved the movies
Weird, this strip made me think of DD well before I realized why. The subconscious is a funny thing.
I spy a Majoras Mask reference.
Just realised you never put the second set of quotation marks in the second panel. Not important, but just so you know.
The moon was traumatic enough without all the “will fall and destroy everything” thing…
I loved Donnie Darko. The sequel… not so much. DD did lead me to read Roberta Sparrow’s book though. As well as Einsteins book on wormholes. Rather interesting stuff.
Wow, so much win
