I drew most of this on a train balancing a keyboard on my brother

For real, though, Nintendo, how about you give us some kinda Pokewalker thing we can put eggs on and if we walk the steps IRL instead of by bicycling in circles around the poke Eiffel Tower we get a higher chance of hatching shinies. Eeeeh? Think about it….
RUUUUN!!!! IT GO-JIRRA!!
Actually, Jared’s idea is pretty cool. I mean, you won’t get bored on a elliptical jog machine while you watch some cool movies, right?
Unfortunately, yes you will. But it might be better if you are completely immersed (like with an Oculus Rift as mentioned).
I lost 30 lbs by riding an exercise bike in front of my xbox while I played MW2 and 3. My brother used to laugh at me because when I was near death I’d pedal faster unconsciously.
Well that IS funny XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
+1
Heh. That won’t help your ‘Mech run any faster…
Maybe you could install some jump jets on your exercise bike?
:)
Funnily enough, I did a similar thing, except while playing racing games, GTA, or Tony Hawk. For RPGs, FPSs, and other First/Third Person games, I usually stand up and kinda pace around. With Dance Central on the Kinect, though, I get to dance and the movements not only help my weight loss, but also count as in-game points! It’s like the greatest thing in the world for me! lol
That’s a damn awesome idea. I need to get some hand held video game device to use at the gym.
Actually, I do something like that with a tablet and some good TV series. 45 minutes of Doctor Who or Agents of SHIELD makes for an excellent cardio.
I’ve actually been trying to get through Classic Who–half hour workout every day is helping me achieve this goal and gives me an excuse to watch a ridiculous amount of TV. And the exercise helps me get through some of the slower episodes.
Well, at least The Doctor must be fairly fit by now. A lot of what he accomplishes includes running…Lots of running.
Two hearts. ‘Nuff said.
Don’t do it! Remember the Helixthu! You’ll begin the war anew!
“some kinda Pokewalker thing we can put eggs on and if we walk the steps IRL”
Wouldn’t even need a pokewalker or such. The 3DS already counts your steps if you take it with you when you go out.
What will they think up next?
It would be nice if there was a “pocket” game specifically designed to interact with the 3DS’ step counter that you could transfer eggs from the main games and hatch them there…
My 3DS is super bad at counting steps, I walked the entire length of SDCC from the Indigo ballroom to the Nintendo lounge to refill the coins I’d spent in Find Mii and didn’t have a single new coin.
Two common things I noticed is that:
1) If you have a NDS game in sleep mode, it won’t count your steps. I think it’s some problems running the emulator and the 3DS software at the same time causing it.
Or…
2) The coin cap is 300, though since you said you were refilling it from spending it all in Find Mii, that’s out the window.
Is this a recurrent problem even outside SDCC?
I wouldn’t know, I don’t normally spend the coins so it’s almost always at 300.
lol you know when i just don’t feel like walking ( which is all the time)i would just shake my 3ds vigorously untill i reach the coin cap.
i know its cheating but hey would you really want to walk X miles just for 10 coins which would only buy you like 5 mii fighters and 5 puzzle pieces ( i fucking HATE that game! that game will robyou dry and 60% of the time you won’t benefit from it)?
also if you do it hard enough it helps with your arm muscles (:
You’re also capped at 10 coins a day, so if you already earned the ten coins that day, it won’t give you any more.
If you are playing a non-3DS game — and the Black and White games are all regular DS games and not 3DS games — the 3DS will not count steps while those games are loaded. It won’t shake hands with other 3DS systems, either, so no new Miis in your plaza. If you are playing a 3DS game, and X and Y are 3DS games and will not play on a regular DS — then the system will count steps and pick up Miis. But no matter which game you play, the steps you take in real life will not count toward hatching eggs. Only the you take in the game.
The 3DS only gives you 10 play coins a day
I walked 14000 steps one day.
You’d think I’d get a little extra credit for that, but nooooo….
If they wanted to actually promote health, they could’ve increases the number of steps to get coins after the first ten. Like once you hit 1000 steps, it could take 300 steps for another coin and raise the coin/day cap to 20. It doesn’t take much walking to get 1000. I could walk to the corner store by my house and back and have most of the coins for the day, and that only takes about 10 minutes both ways.
I think you’re limited to 10 coins per day, one coin every 200 steps.
Hey Coleasquid, as also a 3DS, I got a question: what do you think of Monster Hunter?
*as also a 3DS owner
Dang, that was like a thousand percent cooler till I read the correction. I would welcome our video game overlords.
I’m just waiting for someone to come in here claiming to be an Atari or SNES. I feel like their speech would be weirdly out of date.
I can rightly say that it KICKS ASS.
I will be getting MH4 the day it comes out.
My goal is to beat it in a week.
It’s a really pretty and cool game that I suck at.
Yeah, it doesn’t count well in my purse either, for understandable reasons, but I still miss out on a lot of steps. I can take my purse to work but in a business casual environment, my pants are pocket free so my DS can’t go with me. :(
Didn’t they already have a pokemon walker things? with soul silver/black? a lil tamagotchi thing it came with that you transfer your pokemon to so you can tend them and virtual pet them and it measured your steps to evolve/lvl them up.
yeah, It came out with heartgold and soulsilver…but wouldn’t accept eggs. You could use it to farm pokemon though, as whatever you put in there could catch other pokemon as long as its hp was higher than theirs.
Also I remember reading a thing that said the pokewalker actually worked better than some really expensive pedometers…which is hilarious.
I’m too old, I don’t understand all your pokemon references but I like your work. Is a pokemon one of those little gadgets you have to keep alive? I’m guessing it isn’t. Maybe I should just stick to farming.
Nah, those are Digimon.
I think pokemon are like a type of plant you grow.
No, those are Tamagotchi’s, Digimon were (are?) a rival manga/tv series, instead of having Pocket Monsters they had Digital ones, and those ones could actually speak human!
Digimon did exist in Tamagotchi form first. The later versions of the toy were basically pedometers that leveled as you walked. You could also link them to have button mash battles with other people.
I remember “cheating” by jamming them with paper clips or taping them to the washer on spin cycle.
Oh lord, it’s Old Greg!

Pokemon started as a video game and cartoon show in Japan and began airing in the US in…2000 I think. And than we got the game boy games. Pokemon is short for ‘Pocket Monsters’, and are little (or big) beasties you capture in little TARDIS-like balls and than use to battle other beasties. There are a lot of elements involved (fire, water, grass, fighting, steel, flying, dragon…so many.) And all have weaknesses and strengths to other types, so there is a lot of strategy involved. There are some storylines involved, and each new games adds a lot of new Pokemon, and recently new types too. They newest type being Fairy. SO…no. Not like a Tomogatchi. The joke here however is that you can breed Pokemon, and they lay eggs, and you have to walk around with the egg in your party (you can only carry 6 at a time) for a long time for it to hatch.
Pokemon video was here before 2000, I think. I remember watching it with my then still little girls. The video game, which first came out for the Gameboy Pocket, was first. Red and Green in Japan, and Red in Blue in the rest of the world shortly after.
too old…”The Pokemans” have been around for almost 17 years.
Wait, does he run dual ac-20s, or is he a quad ac-2 kinda guy?
Wrong Jaeger.
Beware the dreaded GH:tMO.
Potentially misspelled too, as I think it might be the one that came from ZBL.
In which case, I’m wondering which exercise equipment came from the Schneider and the Panzer…
/obscurereference
Nah set up like that came from an Iron Kong.
Probably some variant of exercise bike for the quadraped forms?
Personally, I’d say that the armbars are too high for an Iron Kong – more suited to a Gojulas. (Any suggestions for a Guysak interface?)
Honestly I never got into the shiny craze. Or the complete the Pokédex craze for that matter. It’s kind of odd, now that I think about it, that I never really cared much for collecting them all.
I had that problem too. It meant the only games I ever played were R/B (abandoned) and then B/W once I heard it had a plot… which I then quit playing after it was over.
lol…I feel like a nerd. I played Red and my brother had Blue, than me, my brother, and my MOM all had Yellow. My brother and I both had Silver and my mom had Gold. We all had Crystal. I had Sapphire, my brother had Ruby and Sapphire, and my mom had…Ruby I think. We had combinations that I can’t recall of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. I have SoulSilver, my mom has HeartGold, and I fortget what my brother has. I have Black, my brother White, and my mom Black. I have X, she has Y, my brother has…Y too I think. One of these days I need to get Fire Red, Leaf Green…Emerald, Black 2….and whatever else extra.
And aside from those….I have Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2, Pokemon Colosseum, Poke Snap, Pokemon Channel, Hey You Pikachu…and Pokemon Battle Revolution. I’ve played but not owned the Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, and played and not liked one of the Mystery Dungeons.
I tried to get my mom into Pokemon but she’s not nerdy enough :(
At least I got my dad into One Piece, but he doesn’t have the time necessary for Pokemon….
I actually use an elliptical for my cardio. Used to us just the leg version, now I use one with the arm handles too. It does tone the arms up quite a bit.
I like it for toning and resistance training by turning resistance all the way up and trying to finish an hour.
This is probably the best comic title yet.
That’s actually a brilliant idea. The 3DS registers steps, but that only speeds up the recharge time for O-Powers, with a maximum of 4x. If every 1000 steps over that increased your shiny rate… Well my average day nets me between 6 and 8 thousand steps so I’d be quite pleased regardless.
I like the genius bonus of how the trainer is getting Jared (another trainer) to hatch his eggs for him. Different OT numbers make breeding easier.
You obviously haven’t heard of the Blue method…
http://www.reddit.com/r/ShinyPokemon/comments/28o1wc/possible_shiny_chance_booster/
I dunno I used to walk to and from work every day with my DS and I’ve still never encountered a shiny.
I tried that. It’s full of shit.
I remember back when I was in high school, 1997 or so, there was a Pikachu virtual pet with a pedometer built in, but it didn’t tie into any of the gameboy games.
I had the sequel to that, it could connect to the ir port on the gameboy color to mystery gift the G/S games. The gifts were predetermined based on how many watts you sent over though, not a mystery.
My neighbor is 60 & he runs on his elliptical stuff everyday. He’s so healthy & i never see him sent to hospital.
I run a pokemon RPG, and the pokemon labs use treadmills as incubators…
Aha! That’s why the professors need assistants who never seem to get research done! To run on the treadmills all day, to hatch starter pokemon for children starting their journies.
I might even pay for a 3DS app that lets me hatch eggs with real steps.
Didn’t we have that? Like it was a little pokeball and every step you took was counted into it?
Yes, it was the PokeWalker, but you could only put Pokemon in it, not eggs.
You could also get some items and Pokemon in it. I got a Flying Pikachu once. :V
You couldn’t put eggs in it. I wish I could have put eggs in it. That would have made my Pokedex completion a hell of a lot easier.
Your brother is extremely useful. It makes me wish I had siblings. :(
Oculus Rift makes sense for Jared, but I’d use a standard pair of video glasses.
See, I would be the guy that would manipulate the system and just make an automatic actuator in order to simulate steps. Not because I’m opposed to exercise, just because I like breaking the system.
And that’s not too dissimilar from building a little robot to do laps around, say, Saffron City, which was where I went in G/S/C to get my eggs hatched.
Can I kick off the elliptical vs stairmaster vs treadmill vs outdoor running vs rowing machine vs whateverthehellelse argument that’s bound to ensue ?
I’d rather not.
Yes yes yes yes YES Please, Pokemon Inc., make us a downloadable partner app for the 3DS that allows me to hatch my eggs with my 11 mi bike ride to and from work each day!!!
My husband built a table to go around our treadmill, so that I can play WoW while walking on the treadmill!
You have a lovely husband, by the sound of it.
What are the chances that Jared is going to actually get a little bulkier? It’d make for some interesting character development.
i think the universe would collapse on it’s self if he accomplished such a feat….
Strap a Magmar to his back, and you’ll double the hatch rate.
Speaking of video games and exercise. Got a new use for all those old DDR pads. Crypt of the NecroDancer would be perfect.
Some of my friends tried to play FFVII with a DDR mat once, dunno how that went…
Badly
Not just “would be” – the developer has brought a dance pad to shows to show off the game.
No joke, I just found my Pokémon Pikachu a month ago after it had been sitting in storage for the better part of a decade. When I replace the battery on it, he is going to be SO HIGHLY PISSED at me.
Jared and As-Yet-Unnamed girl (I’ll call her AYU for short,) are OTP! They made eye contact, so it must be true!
I’m pretty sure that’s Calem, the male protagonist, or primary rival depending on your choice of gender, for X and Y.
To be honest, I wouldn’t know; I kind of stopped playing Pokemon after Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.
Besides, eye contact means a Pokemon battle, not love!
The 3DS already tracks steps! I was SURE this would be how it worked! But it ain’t.
Anyone else notice that Jared’s hair seems longer? I mean he’s got the thing tied back in a ponytail.
Your Pokewalker idea…
FUND. IT.
Funny thing… You would think Jared is bit more muscular than that considering he used to carry Mr.Fish around Kanto and beat the living nut out of all the pokémon he fought before it evolved to gyarados. :p
Fun Fact, The actors from Pacific Rim actually did compare the scenes in the Jaegar Cockpits to that of a really intense workout on an elliptical.
I think they said that by the time they were done filming a scene in it, they were so dehydrated that they’d just inhale bottles of water afterwards.
“I drew most of this on a train balancing a keyboard on my brother”
I always thought your work was fantastic but now that I know this is actually made with a keyboard…
…
DAMN this is good ASCII art!
Could it be that a girl is actually talking to Jared?
Now that it’s colored, I can see that those are actually Yoshi eggs.
Commence the Yoshipocalypse! No food remaining for miles and miles!
Omnathulu will rise again…
Well, I suppose if there is one form of physical exertion a pokemon trainer would be good at, this would be it.
My big discovery in Pokemon Emerald — and is has recurred in every game since — is that the route right in front of the Pokecenter contains the longest straight route in the entire game. Climb on your bike with your egg and mindlessly cycle back and forth. In Emerald, and 4th gen you have to find the exact line of tiles for this long route, but it’s there. In Ruby and Sapphire, the route has a couple of obstacles in the way, but these were moved for Emerald. In X and Y, if you get the route right, you will not go into the cave on one side and you will slide around the fountain in town on the other side. (How to deal with boring meetings, #463.)
Cue something else horrible happening to Jared next week, same Bat time, same Bat Channel. :P
I love this series of comics quite a lot, even though I am not a fitty person at all.
but if you raise the level setting gradually from 1 to 20 you can get buff
I remember back in the days of Sega Saturn. I used to use one of those cheap stepper machines while playing Virtua Cop with a light gun. I got pretty good at shooting while “running”.
When I learned I could put the thing on the pendulum of my old grandfather clock, I lost the will to exercise.
Hello! First time poster, just finished reading the entire archive. Love this comic; it’s pretty awesome!
Also, the Commander in gym shorts and tank top? Dayam. So danged hot. Heck, he’s hot, period! [gay fanboy mode off]
See, I knew he’d be good at something involving moving his body.
who’s that guy with the pokemon eggs in the last scene?
Calme/Calem, the male trainer from the Pokemon XY games
pretending i’m in a jaeger is exactly why i use the elliptical at the gym oh my god. (and the pacific rim ost is excellent work out music)
Sorry for the off-topic post but I just noticed your most recent Tweets, Coelasquid. Does this mean you work with Mattel on the Monster High toy line? I am such a huge fan of the character designs and I would really love to know if you had any input into any of them!
I storyboard the webisodes (the episodes I’ve boarded haven’t aired yet, but some of the ones I did design and board revisions on are up), so I don’t really have any input on toy design but I get to lord over the acting :P
Eee that’s awesome!!! What a fun thing to work on! I love the webisodes, especially the ones that are encouraging young kids to accept each other for their differences and make friends with those that have different views than they do. Some of those webisodes have such great morals for young females. :)
I have some Monster High collector friends who love video games, I will pass them the link to here, I think they will be very interested! :D
Jared is halfway there.
What’s needed is a VR device so that your running on the treadmill becomes your running away from Godzilla.
now that’s motivation!
My lazy friend took advantage of the step-counting thing by taping his DS to a ceiling fan, which apparently works (at least on his fan).
Wait a little. How is he holding 7 or more eggs at once?
> Nintendo, how about you give us some kinda Pokewalker thing we can put eggs on and if we walk the steps IRL
They did grant your wish: http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-video-games/pokemon-go/
Eggs hatch after you walk a set distance.
Not that anyone still reads this comments section but I’d like to point out taht Coalasquid totally predicted pokemon GO in 2014! ;)
I was just gonna make that comment, as I wandered here in a random archive dive.
Archive-dive or internet time travel? ;)
Hello from the future! Yes this is a good idea and they shall call it POKEMON GO.
