The last time he hugged his family was a very traumatic experience, he’s gotten rusty at it

Sorry this one was especially late, I had to get up early a bunch of times this week and my body is getting too old and too tired and too afraid of motorcycle crashes to pull all nighters like I used to.
first?
also, you wanted kratos to stop being an example, you got exactly that
I’d argue he just started being an example of something else entirely
As the Dad of War Honest Game Trailer put it, Kratos “does his best to teach his son how to survive, and not grow up to be an all-powerful asshole like his dad. All while struggling through an obvious case of PTSDeity.” #NailedIt
My mind read Kratos’ lines with Christopher Judges voice. It was all good.
Christopher Walken’s voice. Yup, that works. Good call.
Indeed
#ISWYDT …We do need to get him a sidekick named “O’Neill” for the next game. Maybe a talking parrot or something.
FUND IT!
We might be on to something here. This could be some sort of Freak Masterstroke!
#NowYouGotSomething
THAT’S WHAT I HEARD!!! :-D
… I think I should point out that, when I made this comment, I didn’t realise that Christopher Judge actually was the voice of Kratos in the game…
I was… trepidatious, but Christopher Judge officially kicked all the ass as the Dad of War.
I know this post is over two weeks old already and I keep revisiting it, but from penguinz0’s ‘Moist Meter’ review of the game (85%! It’s incredibly moist):
Didn´t you make Kratos too pale for the new version? Don´t have the game with me, but certain he started to tear through the whole “ghost of sparta” layer of ash he had going on.
I just eyedroppered the same colour I’ve been using for him since the first comic.
Ok, not a big deal ofc. Just wondered.
You mean he bathed since the previous game?!
Does falling off of a longboat count as bathing?
IMO, it doesn’t technically count as bathing if there’s no soap used…
Did he have soap in hand when he fell out of the boat?
Soap is made with grease and ashes. after having torn through the blubber of various titans, Kratos’s skin is basically covered in “soap waiting to happen”
Nah, not that radical – more that it had worn off.
That tends to happen when you stab the Titan who cursed you in the heart with a giant sword.
I don’t think he’s less ashy in the new game so much as new texures change how the light hits it and the fact he’s in Scandinavia now and EVERYONE is as pale as him so it’s not as
noticeable.
Mmh, could be something like that. Or just a design choice. Last I looked it just seems as if he showed more skin – which could be interpreted as him moving away from having killed his past family and getting into his new.
The toys and stuff are pretty much just stark white so I’m inclined to think it’s a texture/rendering thing.
The ash texture shows up much better in the “Beardless” shot that Santa Monica put out. In the different lighting and against the darker background the ash texturing stands out better. In many areas GoW4 is actually a very Warm game in its scene lighting. Get him into colder scenes, like on the ridge before the Jotunheim gate, and it starts looking more like older GoW models.
There also may be an interesting iteration with the subsurface scattering. It’s especially noticeable in the ears. Which may push the whole overall tone of his “skin” warmer than past models, depending on lighting.
Nah, he’s still noticeably paler than even the viking dudes.
You’d think he’d be looking swarthier in the areas where the ashes don’t cover, with all the shirtless lumberjacking.
…. I take it everyone’s forgetting the bit about the ashes were sort of bound to his skin by a curse. If I remember right it was some sort of lifetime branding. Never actually played any of the games but I tend to spoil myself when looking up games.
I enjoy how even the kid has this look like, “Is this not a hug? Father said this is how you hug.”
When Kratos was teaching his kid how to hug, it was how his kid performs a hug…It doesn’t mean that he Kratos has ever shown his kid how Kratos himself performs a hug.
…Unless Kratos grabbed a dragon or something & hugged it until numerous bones were heard splintering…Which could be why his kid never asks Kratos to hug him *back*
I worry that Spartans teach social graces the way Spartans play gay chicken. The Boy™ will not be considered a man until he is proficient in each of the 37 techniques for hugging a man to death.
The way the speech bubble is placed in the first panel, it looks like Commander is also wearing a tunic/kilt. Give the belayers a show!
Grog’s certainly showing off his half-giant heritage. One of the perks of being a goliath is that you tend to win certain contests uncontested.
This is Kratos from God of War, not Grog from critical role (Who seems to have been based on Kratos). I doubt Coelasquid would ever draw a comic based on Critical Role- while she’s done D&D comics before, it’s one thing to make jokes on a game/ your own game, and another to make jokes on what is essentially a Let’s Play of someone else’s D&D game.
The mind is willing but the body is reflexively avoiding serious injury.
Also, the boy looks so interested in his dad’s weak friend. Maybe because it’s the first visitor he’s ever seen that hasn’t been punched in the face. It’s adorable.
I was honestly afraid you were dead or something similar when you didn’t update. Glad you’re alive!
Also, great update as usual. Mostly happy about you not being dead, though.
My husband had a big all-day wrestling show out of town Sunday and I had to be up early for a record the next day, then I had to get up early again for another meeting plus staying up late for the gym plus my husband’s birthday and it all just ended in not enough energy to crank out a strip.
Well, when you’ve shown us that you can still keep up with this generously free comic even with having a busted flivver (oh wait. squid-tentacle. Make that “tentacle” instead of flivver) in a cast, we tend to worry for you when you’re late.
So yeah…Another one here who is glad to see that you’re not dead.
I also get concerned about the creators I follow when they don’t update, but you know her twitter feed is just right over there somewhere – – > and showed plenty of activity and no ‘WOOPS slipped into a coma and ate my hands in a coma dream’
Well, thanks for THAT addition to my nightmares…
True, but knowing Coela it’s not an unreasonable concern. Not much slows her down.
It’s as terrifying as it is inspiring.
I might have done that, except I don’t do Twitter. No Google, Reddit, or Facebook either.
It doesn’t matter that it’s late. I’m just extra happy that you took the time to make one for this week and put it up halfway through the week – you’re seriously dedicated to this comic and it shows.
Grog’s lower Intelligence is still shining through, which is always one of his fun character traits.
As much as I love critical role, I’m fairly certain that’s Kratos from God of War.
I can see where you went wrong, but Kratos is red, and Grog is basically a blue knock off version of him
Press X to Hug Your Boy hasn’t popped on the screen in years and he just can’t do it without the prompt.
Or he saw it and thinks it’s a sex prompt. Fucking NOPE!
Since Kratos in the game can’t even climb on cliffs unless the ledges are yellow…
…Hey, yeah! What’s up with THAT, anyway?

Honest Trailers, about 4:05 time.
I appreciate how Commander is using safety equipment and Kratos is just yoloing it, it’s very in keeping with both characters.
Helps that Kratos can literally just squeeze gripholes anywhere he puts his hands. In-game mechanics have only a tangential correlation to the comics so in this case: Kratos is gonna Kratos…
Heh same mountain 10 years later:

You didn’t name him boy in the tag. How am I supposed to search for this comic now?
SRSLY, it’s a bad idea to name them, you just get attached. Does Batman name his collection of various Robins? No, he just grabs another one out of the vending machine whenever it needs replacing.
The way you draw his son is so dang cute, I love it.
Now we need to see a playdate
I need an answer to a question I have.
…..Why am I the only one who’s very bothered by the “character development” of Kratos??????
I mean, hello, guys? The developers even had the gall to claim “toxic masculinity” to justify the personality change!!
I mean, you know who else is a prime example of toxic masculinity? LOBO. He’s dirty, sexist, egocentric, cruel, and solves all of his problems with violence. Pretty much like Kratos, if God Of War was a comedy instead of a tragedy.
So what next? We make sure Lobo is politically correct? We make sure he’s no longer a dirty, mean, sexist, violent manchild? ….Oh wait, that’s exactly what DC comics had done, and thankfully they got a lot of backlash for it.
But somehow Kratos the family man is a-ok. Character development. Character development? Then how about a slim, intelligent and active Homer Simpson?
Slim Lobo got backlash because he was literally a different character from regular Lobo, he claimed that the Lobo in all pre-52 appearances was an imposter, and tried to kill him. Kratos in the new God of War is a reasonable extrapolation from Kratos at the end of GoW III, after years of killing everything in his path out of a desire for vengeance ended up getting him nowhere.
The next time you want to slander the concept of social justice, try putting some effort into it.
I…don’t understand what you don’t understand? You correctly identified that Lobo and Homer occupy a different genre, where keeping to the status quo is important because it allows a new or casual audience to pick up anywhere in the series without needing much context. In God of War…Dude’s been through a lot. He’s had a very long story, and has changed as a person. It happens sometimes.
Oh man, your Kratos comics are always my favourite. Probably because he’s the character I have the most experience with, and already was a pretty outrageous guy
Best part of getting a new game haha
I found a safer activity for Kratos to do with his son:

Dad jokes.
Though speaking of Christopher Judge, is Teal’c viable for appearance in MGDMT?
Baby steps Kratos. A hug is like a death grip, just… Not.
I was just staring at your page’s title bar with the characters and had an urge to comment unrelated to this newest comic.
I just realized how lovely Junebug and her relationship with her father is and how adorably bubbly she is. I have ADHD and aside crappy childhood I was constant talk and enthusiasm all over the place until 7-8. Pläääh, you probably have not meant her to resemble quite that, but she is lovely character (like all of them tbh) that always makes my day.
That’s all. :D Just wanted to share the appreciation.
P.S> Apropos of nothing, I just happened to notice that the link to Oglaf on the Links page is written “Olgaf”. Which, like, totally isn’t its name and stuff.
(The URL is correct, so ultimately the link works and it doesn’t matter that much. But still, it’s kind of like calling someone Kimmy when their name is Kelly.)
I must know Leonidas’ reaction to dad of war is.
I’m convinced Kratos only wears the furs so that hugging/cushioning the fall of Atreus is more comfortable. He doesn’t even feel cold. Hence the Open Nips.
Is it just me or does Kratos’ kid look kinda like a young Sokka from Last Airbender
It’s a little less similar in-game, where Atraeus’ hair looks more reddish (which probably is foreshadowing for one of the many reveals in-game) and he looks a bit pastier but honestly at times his haircut really reminds me of Sokka and the furs don’t help.
It’s my headcanon that Atreaus totally loves Mr. Fish once he meets him (Kratos thinks Atraeus is safe enough around Jared because the Commander trusts Jared with his own children) given how well he gets along with the World Serpent. Boy is has he can’t talk to Mr. Fish, though. He then starts trying to lean to speak Pokemon. Kratos commends his son’s ambition to one day command more great beasts in their native tongue.
