Reyes isn’t a bad guy, he’s just committed to his aesthetic
Is it possible to post the third panel without the text? Seriously want it as my picture for my companies directory. It’s freakin sweet.
Sure, here you go.
This is why I love webcomis :) you actually get to interact with the creators who happen to be awesome!
Ohhh it even has the beginnings of the blackwatch logo, that’s fantastic!
“When we hunt, we kill!
No one is safe!
Nothing is sacred!
We are Blackwatch!
We are the last line of defense!
We will burn our own to hold the red line,
it is the last line to ever hold!”
Wait… Wrong game. *facepalm*
Thank you so much for this. You are Awesome in the best sense. Absolutely love the comic and have been reading it for years.
Someone’s getting fired in 3….2….
Ah, yes… Reyes will never understand that his whole rebellion is just proving that the powers that be were right in not putting him in charge…
Plus, if they hadn’t dumped him over to Blackwatch, we’d never have gotten McCree, so it’s all good, right?
Yeah, the higher-ups understand that you don’t really get into good leadership positions unless you can at least be reasonable AND be reasoned with.
Yea but the thing is it never was stated that what he wanted was being the leader. After all his efforts, he was “passed over”- that is, rather underappreciated or possibly completely unrewarded for his deeds. THAT is what made him annoyed
Of course that doesnt condone allahu-akbaring the base but its not as simple as “I didnt get the promotion I wanted”
Also a rebellion needs like-minded people, meaning that others felt underappreciated like him, just saying
You know oddly enough, reyes seems More cordial after his undead incident, especially when he goes “Hiiiiiii” clawed hand up
Or the handshake spin. “HI HI HI!” Donno why nobody likes that, it’s a sweet shtick.
Young Soldier 76 looks a lot like a kinda slimmed down Commander
More than just slimmed down. He also has a straight nose that hasn’t been busted (who knows how many times), like the Commander’s.
Before my brain caught up to who the characters actually were, I thought it was Young!Commander and, uh, one of the Gears of Wars guys? Maybe Jet.
Maybe Soldier 76 is really the Commander’s son Sam all grown up?
New Overwatch headcannon accepted.
“Hey son, jus a quick question. Why’d ya change yer name to Jack Morrison?” “Eh, people were really not taking ‘Sam Lobster’ seriously. After a few times being turned down for jobs because they thought I was some prankster filling in a fake name I changed it to something that sounded both more ‘realistic’ and blandly average.”
What if the future space military used some of 76’s DNA to grow Rock Lobster from?
And then he traveled back in time and fathered his DNA donor?
No!!! No grandfather paradoxes here!!!
We have enough time travel shenanigans going on in the spacefuture, what’s one more wrinkle in time?
Stop thinking about it, and we’ll all be fi-OH CRA
Ah, the answer to all lifes post pubescent problems.
You know what I just realized?
Reyes is black. He’s the only one who died before the story even started.
I thought he was Latino. But he does look Black.
People can be black AND Latino.
Bitchin. Black Gabriel sounds neat.
But Blaxicans are a myth, like jackelopes or pegasus!
He does look pretty black, but I’m pretty sure he’s fairly well established as Latino. So probably a black guy from a Latinx area.
What about Genji?
Did Genji actually die? I am not up with Overwatch lore and just thought he was crippled and given a cyborg conversion.
Though if it was more like the Robocop set-up, I could see that, since Murphy was a corpse.
Point. Now’s the question of who died first…
Genji. There are official pictures of the old Overwatch team including both Genji and pre-Reaper Gabriel Reyes.
Eh? No way, mate. Genji’s never joined Overwatch, he has nothing to do with it. And Reyes is much older than Shimada, so it’s far more likely Reaper died first.
Not true, in his short Winston has a picture of the old Overwatch vets, cyborg Genji is with them and Reyes has his back to the group. Also, on the age note, I would like to state that Reaper is canonically also around twenty years older then McCree and Mercy, both members of pre-disbanded Overwatch. Mercy’s also heavily implied to have saved Genji’s life.
Yeah, Genji was canonically running with overwatch from when he “died” until they split up or something like that.
(It should be noted (as a footnote to that) that the “canonical ages” don’t always make sense compared to later-released backstory canon.
I.E. look at the team shot with Diabeetus Inducing Lil’ Farheea in Ana’s shot, then note the canonical ages listed for McCree and Pharah. Yeah, those numbers fall right in Twain’s categorization (Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics).)
*Ana’s short. SHORT.
Although she was also shot in that short, I suppose…
The implications of that picture concerning McCree are astounding if you think about it. He can’t logically be more than 18 or 19 in that picture, meaning he was a feared arms-dealing gangster in his TEENS and probably technically a child soldier when Reyes recruited him to Overwatch. That’s kinda messed up.
If I remember correctly, he was a part of the Deadlock gang. Very much child soldier, or more like child thug.
Indeed. McCree was a likely recruited as a little kid and did mostly small jobs while being ‘raised’ by the gang.
Also, Reyes only died 6 years back, which is the incident that finalized Overwatch being shut down and outlawed.
Genji died sometime more than 6 years back, but less than 10, which is the point that the UN started their investigation (likely due to Reyes and Blackwatch mischief) and the same time that McCree left Overwatch (likely due to the same reasons).
Of course Overwatch was originally part of the whole “avert robopocalypse” thing, so yeah child soldier is messed up, but more than killer robots everywhere? :)
Oh man I love these Overwatch comics. Stellar as always.
He’s just misunderstood…
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha….*gasp* hahahahahahahahahahahahah *gasp**gasp* hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I also had that reaction. Especially since I’m a Reaper “main.”
I unfortunately don’t own the game, but when I’ve gotten the chance to play I usually main split between Lucio and Reaper. But nobody seems to care about the medic. No one. At all.
Yeah, you are also the one with the rage issues
It’s true…it IS a freakin’ sweet pic. Gloriously overwrought and freakin’ sweet.
Coelasquid, if I haven’t said before how much I love your expressions on all these folks, well, let me say it now. They’re so great. XD
…please tell me I’m not the only one who heard Terry Crews in my head voicing Reaper in this.
I didn’t but now I do. It is beautiful. Thank you.
And Soldier 76 sounds like Isaiah Mustafa (The “I’m on a horse” guy”).
Plus those probably aren’t too far off from Morrison and Reyes younger voices given thst this happens like, twenty-five to thirty years in canon?
don’t cut yourself on that edge, gabe
Y’know what would also be freackin sweet? If they kissed… Oops, did I say that out loud?
Don’t worry, Tumblr beat you to it.
Yeah, the ‘why does daddy/high command love you more!?” Trope, good move Blizzard. One of the few times I prefer the crazy fan theories.
“Because Gabe, you have no head for logistics. You’re better at tactical command than long term strategic management. Case in point, how many empty shotguns have you thrown on the ground instead of reloading today?”
“…It’s faster in the heat of battle…”
“Suuuuurrreee it is. Instead of just, oh I don’t know, just using one shotgun.”
“Screw you Jack duel-wielding’s cool!!”
“…It’s faster in the heat of battle…”
except for the fact that carrying 50 to 100 pounds of spare shot guns should slow him down too
Hmmm I wonder how much money could be made following scavaging the battle feild after reapers been through just on his cast off shotguns alone
I think there’s a fan comic about that involving Junket getting wide eyed and shouting “This fucker’s giving away free guns. Still let’s say that reaper throws away say 50 shotguns per game round (this is a conservative estimate). Now let’s say those guns are between $300-500 a piece. This means, per round of the game Reaper is throwing away about somewhere in the ballpark of 15 grand to 25 grand Every round.
Actually just looked up semi-auto shotgun prices in the US and a more accurate estimate of the price of Reaper’s guns would actuallu be in the ronage of $1000-$1500 dillars each (I had remmington price estimates in my head before then which are nowhere close to what he’s actually using). This means every game round he is throwing away 50 to 75 grand and at least $100,000 worth of guns every game (assuming each game is only two rounds) or possibly as much as $225,000. Per game. That means in ten games he is throwing away at the bare minimum $1,000,000 and quite possibly twice as much. If say, Junkrat were to collect these empty guns from the field and sell them he could give a large discount to attract customers and make a huge profit. The only logical way Talon hasn’t gone bankrupt on account of Reaper’s guns is that they probably have an entire team devoted to collecting the discarded shotguns.
ohhh I remember that comic now.
I wonder if the Overwatch universe has something like Marvels Damage Control
A government subsidized business that goes in after a huge battle, has its own super powered members, that clear away debris, dispose of any discarded death rays, and negotiate settlements with any suddenly sentient masonry (in one issue following a magical type battle the empire state building came to life and decided it wanted to travel. To save newyorks tourism they said it was allowed one months vacation each year in the off season)
Maybe the way his shotguns disappear after 8 seconds isn’t just a gameplay convenience? Maybe his guns have something that teleports them back to Talos’s armory when he lets go of them for too long. Where, presumably, there’s some disgruntled intern who gets saddled with the job of putting shells in them
I can just imagine a Talon intern slavishly reloading a shotgun, putting it next to a pile on his left, letting out a sigh of relief because it’s the last one, and then another two empty shotguns appear to his right while his reloaded pile starts disappearing, and he just looks at the camera and says, “It’s a living.”
I saw a fan made animation dealing with this same subject and it’s just a gang of demons throwing shotguns through a portal in a he’ll dimension. Meanwhile Tracker asks, “Well what did you do before you, ya’know, died?” Reaper: “Soldier 76 would run up and give them to me from behind. That didn’t sound right but you know what I meant. “
Let him keep his edgy #aesthetic!
Obviously it’s because his trigger discipline in the company directory photo is awful.
I am of the opinion that Reaper/Gabe with excessively bad trigger discipline is extremely in-character.
“How did you ever even become a special forces operative?”
Unless Overwatch is the prototype for Rock’s organization . . .
That makes too much sense.
Oh dear God you’re right. You know what that has to mean right? Talon was also set up by the UN after the Omnic crisis in order to create conflict, and thus profit. Vishkar’s in on it too!!! Reyes is secretly in deep cover in order to find and destroy those in charge, but is doomed to failure!!!!! Reinhardt is a saint of Brando in the space future!! And Mei became the mother of threatening innorder to create more colonial worlds for humanity!!!
Well Vishkar is literally Blood Money, Inc.
(No, really. Apparently “Vish Kar” tranlsates to “poison tax”.)
Well, Reaper has to be getting the money for all of his bespoke shotguns from somewhere. He was the prototype. The army was going for badass but ended getting Lord Edge.
But seriously, can Reinhardt please be a saint of the future church of Marlon Brando Coelasquid? Pretty please?
My HC is that Talon is responsible for not only what happened to Reyes, but also had something to do with the money shenanigans that got the UN investigating Overwatch, somehow…
It was all a Talon plot.
Dude legit tosses his guns away after running out of ammo.
How could he NOT have excessively bad trigger discipline? That’s not something that just manifests after a well-meaning Doctor turns you into a half-dead vampire zombie thing.
As I do not game since the 2000’s I though the blond one was Captain Commando.
There is a resemblance.
I’ve read all of your comic, but I really like this one a lot for some reason.
Puts me in mind of an Overwatch/Hamilton crossover I saw on Tumblr:
How does Morrison
Ingrate, damn fool
Somehow end up
Strike-commander, our leader
A job he’s despised since the beginning
Just to keep me from winning?
I wanna be in the room where it happens
The room where it happens
The room where it happens
You’ve kept me from
The room where it happens
For the last time
I have a feeling Morrison and Rock would get along really well, at least when Morrison isn’t being too grumpy.
Just have Rock time travel a bit earlier in Morrison’s life, then – certain events conspired to make him grumpy, so if they meet before those events happen to him…
With some time, some Linkin Park, and a sweet mask, Gabriel Reyes will transform himself into The Edgiest Edgelord.
no need for linkin park… this is better
Every time Reaper says one of his respawn lines, I’m reminded of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUDls2PgDUY
I never bought overwatch but does it even HAVE a story? It only has versus mode, doesn’t it?
Eh whatever. Tracer (and zarya’s sick hair) is the only part of overwatch that interests me really. Every other character is just super bland and/or generic to me.
Also I wish the game wasn’t pure false advertising. All ads use clips from the short films instead of any gameplay, and the short films aren’t even IN THE GAME.
Does it have a story? Yes. Is that story in the game? No, Blizzard has a ton of stuff on the side, like comics, animated shorts, and the like. Is it important to the game? Not really, but it’s worth going over, reading, and/or watching, because it’s really good.
Also, the ads could possibly be seen as misleading by some people, because they use stuff from the short films, but they are interspersed with gameplay. I see a handful of the commercials daily on my store’s advertising TV. False advertising would be a very large stretch, because A) the short film footage is part of the Overwatch “experience”, and B) the commercial straight up tells you it’s a 6v6 team based shooter.
the weirdest thing to me is that the game itself is non cannon in the overwatch universe
the thing there universe was created to support has no bearing on that universe
Obviously the game is an in-universe fundraising thing!
Oh yeah, it has a story. It has a rich and detailed enough backstory that makes you want to reach out and shake Blizzard and scream “TELL US MORE”, while the consensus of everyone I know is “BLIZZ OVERWATCH MOVIE WHEN SHUT UP AND TAKE OUR MONEY”.
(An interesting and relevant bit of backstory here from Ana’s second short comic is that Reaper is still instantly recognizably Gabriel Reyes under the mask.)
Why not make Robbie Reyes aka Ghost Rider to give him a Very calm but stern rebuke for attitude adjustment? (New Ghost Rider, drives a black mustang with fiery wheels and is mexican, so it is not so stretch of imagination that Ghost Rider is your cousin or relative).
I absolutely forgot that Robbie Reyes has a little brother called Gabe. Curioser and curioser :)
I really love how you drew morrison, you give him a more adult and roughed up touch than in his official art where he look very young and somewhat naively heroic
