I’d be surprised if I was the first to take a crack at it.
I felt like there was a poison joke coming… but then I sneezed.
Yeah, Agent Orange as in the DC representative of Greed isn’t the same thing as herbicide Agent Orange.
The thing that tickles me is Larfleeze (Agent Orange) accusing everyone of being communist and not working hard enough.
For the first half of that run I figured his eponymous name was “Mine” (kinda like Hodor from GoT). That’s virtually all I can remember him saying during that whole arc.
Even more amusing (to me at least) is outside of the Commander in the first panel, the whole strip is “Alien Folks doing Alien Things” (not even all guys). One of the things I like most about your comic Coel is that you figure out ways of working gags like these into the world you’ve built. The whole summit idea isn’t exactly in keeping with the overall canon, but by adding in the Commander up top it still works beautifully (and still made me literally laugh out loud). Kudos!
Here’s to hoping Sinestro comes back in a later comic. I’ve always thought of him as a man’s man.
Ah, but what of his pecs?
It does seem like Sinestro lacks a certain amount of… pectoral girth.
Atrocitus is probably better equipped in that respect, though I’m not sure if all-consuming rage is all that manly.
Kilowog has the necessary pectoral girth, and then some xD
Agreed, I’ve been waiting for Kilowog to show up! Also, since this is my first comment: I’ve been loving this strip. Keep it up!
If you seek a yellow ring with the pectoral girth, there is always Arkillo.
And Mongol. Sinestro punished him good, but he had a yellow ring and was about as big as Darkseid. As a matter of fact, many of the male superheroes and villains have notable pectoral girth.
If all-consuming rage counted against your manliness rating in this comic, I kind of doubt Kratos would be pretty much the most major non-original character…
wesker didnt met the pectoral girth either…
Doesn’t that only apply to people working for the agency. And I’m pretty sure Jared doesn’t meet that requirement either.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Jared is an intern, correct? They’re not technically employees.
He’s an intern but he makes like $500 a week. He’s more or less Commander’s PA that he hired because he has a soft spot for kids.
I hate Jared. He makes about 800% of what I made at my internship.
Plus, he has a Garados.
I’ve been following your comic for a while now Coela, and it’s one of a very few I like enough to eagerly check on every Monday :D
And I just saw Green Lantern Last week, and was surprised at how many stupid people left a DC (or any comic-based movie for that matter) before the abridged credits were over to see Sinestro putting on the yellow ring :/
Way to ruin the movie :P
It’s impossible to ruin something that is already that bad.
I’m soryr, what exactly was so bad about that movie/ Having been a GFreen Lantern fan for years tht movie was suprisingly one of the best comnic book movie adaptations since the Watchmen.
Anyway good Lantern Comic :3
Oh come on, you KNEW it was eventually gonna happen.
Haha, thank you! I just finished watching The Green Lantern on my laptop, and had paused at the beginning of the credits to come back and see this comic make more sense. Now I know to finish the credits.
*finishes the credits*
Agent Orange Reminds me of a few Trumps- er… chumps out there.
The black lanterns have yet to comment as they are still on lunch
I thought they were dealing with the Lantern spillage they caused in the gulf?
In other news, an update on the Deepspace Horizon Lantern Spill:
The recent lantern energy spill off the edge of Sector 2814 is now being cited as the largest accidental lantern power spill in the history of the Guardians of the Universe industry. Representatives from Battery Power (BP) state that the spill stemmed from an Oa-floor Lantern Battery gusher that resulted from the April 20, 2010, Nekron-induced explosion in the Deepspace Horizon, which was formerly served by the BP-operated spacecraft Entitlement Issues. The explosion killed 11 Green Lanterns and injured 17 others. On July 15, 2010, the leak was stopped by capping the gushing wellhead, after it had released about 4.9 million rings of Black Lantern. An estimated 53,000 corpses per day escaped from the grave just before it was capped. On September 19, 2010, the relief Core process was successfully completed, and the Guardians of the Universe declared the Black Core “effectively dead”.
The spill caused extensive damage to space and habitable worlds and to the Horizon’s space-faring and tourism industries. In late November 2010, 42 Sectors of the region were re-closed to visitors after zombie relatives showed up at a marching band performance in Sector 804.
The Justice League has named BP as the responsible party, and founding members have committed to holding the Guardians accountable for all cleanup costs and other damage. After its own internal probe, BP admitted that it made mistakes which led to the Nekron power spill.
When reached for comment, the following, this reporter received the following quotes:
BP (Battery Power; Guardians of the Universe): “Piss off. We control space-time. Nyah nyah!”
Superman: “This was a travesty. I’ve half a mind to ret-con my powers again, travel through time, and kick their little blue behinds!”
Batman: “JUSTICE!” (Ed. Note: Since this is the only quote we’ve ever gotten from Batman about ANYTHING, it’s possible he was speaking of something else.)
Kyle Rayner: “PARALLA – er… no comment!”
More on this as it develops!
What color would you like your internet, brilliant sir?
I was hoping someone would use my comment as a launching point. You exceeded my expectations. Thank you for the really good laugh. :D
Well, I’m glad at least a couple people both read and understood it. Couple dozen bonus nerd points to you both! ^_^
Best post of this year; of all years.
Wow, just, wow.
…I take it I need to see the film for this one?
I’ve been debating with myself about it. Friends say it’s terrible, but no one will give me a straight answer if it’s so bad it’s good.
I think it has a lot more to do with comics than film. I don’t know if the film introduced any Lanterns beyond green.
Eh, they kinda touched on Yellow…
you don’t need to see the movie, just read the comics.
the movie is good, but not spectacular.
Good enough to see with a lady friend who has expressed prior interest in seeing this only because it looked so bad it’s good?
Meh. If you do go, go to a matinee showing. Both myself and the friend I saw it with enjoyed ourselves (we didn’t really have any opinions on the movie beforehand), but it’s not worth paying full ticket price to see.
Go to a showing where you know it will be almost empty. So…before noonish. Horrible movies were created as an excuse to go to a dark room to make out.
Nah, this is comics stuffs – the film has enough problems with 1 color.
In short : Green lanterns use will power for energy, whereas other colors use other emotions (Rage, Avarice, Fear, Hope, Compassion, Love).
Emotions Fuel sources is essentially the joke here. You just have to be at least a level 4 nerd to get it.
I love this comment.
not really, just know that emotions = energy in the Lanternverse.
…which leads to wondering just what colour Manliness is?
Tartan or something.
Black Watch, or another clan’s tartan?
Manliness is Brown, just watch Tangled; “What are you smelling? because to me, it’s part man smell and the other part is Really bad man smell, all in all it just smells like the color brown”
… but nobody meets the required pectoral girth in Tangled… so how can we trust this source?
Cept for a good number of the brutes in the tavern…
Now, now, don’t forget the manliest character in Tangled: Maximus
Is this saturday morning entertainment for the Commander?
Laughed so much harder then I should of. I try to avoid politics most of the time, sad that greed has become a political issue though.
Greed has always been a political issue. It could even be argued that it’s the one political issue that has always mattered, no matter what level of politics we’re talking about.
trolololololololol thanks so much for cracking this onnnneeeeeeee <3
however was i the only one who was slightly surprised (let alone disappointed.xD) that sarah wasnt sitting there in the commanders shirt too? ^_~
Too right! :L
Oh yeah. I do think you’re the only person to make this joke.
A joke with an easily recognizable topic, but requires an in-depth understanding of DC Comics lore. Congratulations! The joke is simultaneously funny for the every person, but impossible for them to understand why.
Would the Star Sapphires be Code Pink in this scenario?
In-depth? You’re making me laugh. I have never read a single DC comic in my whole life, yet I understood the emotions=fuel joke.
Atrocitus doesn’t seem terribly enraged here. Has he gotten so angry at this crap that he’s passed into that wonderful place of cold, still wrath?
Then again, consider what happened to the water jug between panels 6 and 7.
Lazy artistry? Possibly.
Split second ragesmash? Possiawesome.
That comment is just…. Thank you sir
I LOVE YOU FOREVER FOR THIS COMIC.
I feel a missed opportunity to have Kilowag as the Green representative. He is the manliest of all Green Lanterns.
I was looking for the most diplomatic.
Yeah then I guess Tomar is the best.
Kilowog is e***.
I don’t think I’ve ever loved one of these comics more than I love this one. I would make an argument for Guy Gardner being the Green representative, but honestly he wouldn’t give two shits about an energy conference.
He should be around the office, though. Just sayin’.
Ahahha, I figured if I went with an alien Lantern, no one would feel slighted that I didn’t use Guy/John/Hal :P
Smart move, I will now RAGE about why you didn’t include Kyle in the possible GL representatives ;)
really really, love this stripe since I’m such a GL (*cough Kyle cough*) fan boy
But there will be a three way fight of Guy, John, and Hal eventually, right? Preferably in cream corn as it’s yellow properties will make their lantern powers useless… and just more fun to watch.
Would the addition of wood make this scenario better or worse?
I recall a book some time ago (can’t remember which) in which GL intended to take on Batman for some reason or other. He showed up in the Batcave… only to find it completely painted yellow, along with the Batsuit, Batmobile, Batcomputer… hell, Batman might have been drinking lemonade (though I doubt that last bit: the only thing in batman’s glass is JUST-ICE). The man ALWAYS plans ahead.
Frank Miller’s All-Star Batman aka Frank Miller Trolls the DC Universe. And yeah, he was drinking lemonade. Hal gets some line like “DAMN YOUR LEMONADE!”
Yeah, why is Frank Miller so God Damn insane now?
Where might I find the comic this is from? It seems too awesome NOT to see.
DAMN you’re good.
My friend and I were talking about this like five days ago for some reason :P
Guy Gardner, though, is a huge manly man. Doesn’t matter if he carries the green or yellow ring (he had Sinestro’s ring for awhile), or no ring. He’s a bad-ass dude who has squared off with Lobo, for Pete’s sake!
my only comment is cereal is not manly enough for the commander it should be steak an eggs! the steak from a bull he just wrestled to the ground an snapped its neck an the eggs from going back in time killing a group of raptors an taking the eggs!!! now that’s a good part of a manly breakfast.
…or the steak could be from killing canadian guy an taking it from him im sure he has plenty in stock.
The commander doesn’t need to eat manly food all the time. He’s manly because he BELIEVES he’s manly.
Plus cheerios are good for your heart and part of this manly balanced breakfast.
skip to 3:50.
quote ends at 4:40
No love for Alan Scott?
I’ll be passing this one over to my sociology teacher, as we had a debate almost identical to this in our last lesson. XD
Also, she is a huge Green Lantern nut.
Oh, this comic is beautiful.
Having just read Blackest Night… I actually get this joke, yay!
I hear Starscream’s voice on Agent Orange guy. Anybody else?
Which one? There are four different voices for him just in the American cartoons. Five if you count his ghost in Beast Wars.
I’m betting on the “OW, MY FOOT!” one.
Oh god, this is awesome. It just works way, way too well.
And you get a gold star for tying it into your own continuity.
Good to see Commander stays up to date on late breaking intergalactic news. Because knowing is half the battle.
And SHEER D*MN M*NLINESS is the other half.
I’m a pretty severe fan of this rendition of Larfleeze. He looks strong and dragon like, like a fella who is not afraid to rend a few limbs to protect his stash. He’s generally portrayed as quite spindly and it’s hard to think he hass murdered his way through his whole Corps.
To be fair, you don’t actually need to be all that physically impressive when you’ve got a power ring.
Yes! I loved this down to its roots! And you absolutely nailed Larfleeze there…”I thought this was America! Why do you hate America?”
Obvious or not, this comic gets by on Larfleeze alone.
I find it oddly hilarious that it’s the Red RAGE guy who is calmly and reasonably pointing out the flaws in the Orange GREED guy’s ideas. There’s just something hilariously ironic about it, like a USSR ambassador pointing out the inherent flaws of trickle-down economics to a US republican senator.
The true joke is mostly lost on me, because I’ve never read Green Lantern comics and I don’t live in America (Go ahead, call me a communist, agent orange :P), but all I saw was the gay flag in the background.
I demand more subsidies for Avarice! You are all jealous of Agent Orange!
Larfleeze demands sustenance!
That’s standard corporate America mixed together with corrupt politics for you. Goes to show how terrible our government is, and how desperate for a change we really are.
Sure, America is far from the worst place to live, but if nothing changes, it has the possibility to be in the top 10 of that list, along with Darfor, North Korea, and Pakistan.
That needs to be Tomar-Tu. Tomar-Re has been dead forever.
A lot of characters I draw in this comic have been dead forever.
In the DC and Marvel universe, no one stays dead forever. Save Uncle Ben and Bruce Wayne’s parents.
That’s how you know if it’s really hit the fan: if you see a white light, hear dead relatives AND Uncle Ben or Thomas or Martha Wayne you’ve been canceled pal.
What made me laugh is Larfleeze telling the other Lanterns, “Why do you hate the rich? Because you don’t work hard enough!” Only Larfleeze would say something like that and come off like a politician.
I like how you track the relevant trend in nerdity and then comic all over it.
So is Larfleeze a Republican?
I think he’s whatever generic corporation asks that way when asked to actually pay taxes, the republicans are the politicians in the audience who missed the bit where he isn’t paying his taxes.
Not exactly a GL fan. Still got the joke, nice job Coela, you did it again :D
Shadowgirls extras helped me get some of the background on this, but…ah, political debate. Even in Manlyland some things stay the same. \=)
I actually did not see this one coming at all…but it seems so obvious in retrospect.
totally in agreement there with you
I love this and you
Somewheeeeere under the rainbow…
Am I the only one who read the last panel in Randy Marsh’s drunken slur?
That was more or less what was going through my head when I wrote it :P
So, let me get this straight:
Fear = nuclear. Oh… boy… After what happened Japan I think this is awesomely correct…)
Compassion = Alternative, renewable energy? Sorta like how wind/wave turbines are being compassionate to the environment and all?
Wow, I see you’ve put some thought into this…
So, Yellow (Greed) = Petroleum? Green (Will) = ??
(I would think Green energy = Bio-fuels. You just gotta have the will to overhaul the energy distribution system before it’d be viable)
I believe you are mostly correct there.
Green (Will) = bio fuel
Yellow (Fear) = nuclear
Indigo (Compassion) = alternative
Orange (Greed) = fossil fuels
Not sure what the others would be. Blue is hope, red is hatred/rage and violet is love.
Blackest Night was interesting to read, but some of the Corps were awful.
Why isn’t this being translated by our super rings of awesome power.
And then Green Arrow comes in and ruins everything.
Uh the joke went over my head in more than a few spots.
Good to see the Commander is keeping his cholesterol down though.
I love seeing my favorite lantern Larfleeze in your style! This cheered me up considerably on my sick day from work.
Get well soon! I can appreciate a giant radioactive lizard.
He may have just taken a sick day without being actually sick, you know.
I’ve done it enough times.
I’ll give him/her the benefit of the doubt.
I appreciate the sympathy. I only wish I could fake sick days better. My barf sound effects need more coaching.
I don’t think we should be listening we should be listening to Indigo 1, what with that fact that she’s a brainwashed zombie held captive by the indigo light of compassion. SUCK IT INDIGO TRIBE!
I like that the Commander is getting his fiber with those Cheerios. Manly men know maintaining good colon health is pretty macho.
I am a big Larfleeze fan, I have his symbol tattooed on my arm, two light up box sets of the rings, Larfleeze still in a box, Larfleeze out of one so I can play with him and Orange Luthor…..the poor mans Larfleeze
Give me back those toys. They’re MINE.
Orange Luthor, jaundiced evil threatening us all! Now with 40% more greediness!
Atrocitus is the $%^&, awesome violent big manly dude :D
Is it bad that for all the hilariousness of this joke, I keep coming back to the drawing on the fridge? I keep imagining his daughter drawing it and being like “And this is my family as giants, look at us TRAMPLE THIS HOUSE, BWAHAHHAHA!”
We can run the universe on emo magical girls. There’ll always be some emo that we can stand to get rid of….
／人◕ ‿‿ ◕人＼
Love this one. Not as much as the previous Canada Guy strip but still… made me lol. Also the word you want is “cancerogenic” .
Nope. Carcinogenic is the word I want. Especially when the definition of the word “cancerogenic” just flat-out IS “carcinogenic”.
My mind is full of fuck! My bad, got to learn them englishes.
Is that orange guy Silvio Berlusconi? He totally look like! xD
why do i get the feeling that i’m the only one getting the gay vibe from this? then throw in the political horseshoe and now i kinda want to join canada in his boat
This comic kind of makes me want to read Green Lantern. Is it good? I don’t think I’ve read an American comic before, I thought they were just all about fighting.
I hope by “American” you mean “Marvel/DC”, because that would be an extremely sad assumption otherwise.
I didn’t mean every single American comic ever. Though I have never seen or heard of an American comic that isn’t about fighting, so I assumed that the majority were. Also, I think the only American comics I know are Marvel/DC so I suppose that is what I meant. ^^;
Perhaps I ought to have said “most”, I’m sorry.
No one answered my question about Green Lantern though, is it good? If I were to read it, I’d probably have to import it and I don’t want to spend money on a fighting comic.
I wouldn’t bother with Green Lantern if you want a more typical American strip. You can’t possibly go wrong with Captain America though…
Are you talking about West vs East vs Web comics? Like comic books vs manga vs webcomics?
Because nearly every Westernized comic book is done in the same style. Only manga/Eastern comics are done in a different style. Webcomics are a thing all in their own that reflect a personal style and maybe Eastern and Western styles.
Marvel/DC and “Western comics” are not the same thing. Not all Western, or even American comics are Superhero comics and they are far from all in the same style. Marvel and DC certainly have the biggest market share and most known names, but that’s as bad as saying “all American animation is Disney”. Western comics are as varied as webcomics, because the internet is just a new platform that’s easily accessible for small press and Indie guys.
If you think comics need to have, at no time, been online to count as “real” books, look at most of the stuff Image, Darkhorse, Vertigo, or any of a myriad of independant publishers are doing, The Goon about a prohibition era mob boss/ enforcer in a turf war with a rival gang of zombies and voodoo abominations, Mad Raccoons about a society of spastic raccoon people, Gloom cookie about modern goth fairytail demons, Slaine about Celtic barbarians. Look at the variety of material on the Image preview board or the Darkhorse comics library. Even look at Garfield or Cathy or Peanuts or Get Fuzzy or Sherman’s Lagoon or Far Side or Calvin and Hobbes VS Archie. Those are all “western comics”.
Even just saying “all Marvel/DC guys draw alike” is fairly misinformed. Jim Lee does not draw like Frank Quietly does not draw like Simon Bisley does not draw like Chris Samnee does not draw like Goran Parlov does not draw like Tony Harris and so on. It’s true there are a lot of people trying to break into comics by drawing like “artist x” as much as I’m sure you see a lot of fledgling manga artists who try to be CLAMP or Hirohiko Araki.
I guess what I’m saying is, pick up a volume of Popgun sometime and tell me that’s all drawn in one style.
And even within Marvel/DC, you can get some amazingly different ones. Neil Gaiman’s was published under DC, is canon in DC, had characters from DC acting in the plot, but is very different from the “all about fighting” stereotype of comics.
interesting, got into paheal a few minutes ago, saw the feature, read the comments and want of em send u to an image related to the feature (ugly americans) which is marked as done by coelasquid….man, the world have strange ways to be funny
I was one of the designers and animators on the first season, I wasn’t on the new season starting tonight at all though. Still, I’m proud of it, I was there for the early days, it’s nice to see it succeeding :D
Oh Paheal, that’s the rule 34 place? I think the closest thing I did to UA porn would be the Clockwork Orange Milk Bar parody with all the naked Callie statues.
actually thats the one im talking about, nice art by the way, would be an awesome wallpaper :D although thanks to that i forgot what i was looking for in the first place, stupid mosquito memory i have XD
It was a wallpaper, every month I drew the characters doing something different to be my desktop at work.
You’re so awesome!
This is almost your best comic yet, topped only by the Magikarp Pokemon battle.
Coming soon, more on the UN investigations into SHIELD’s questionable treatment of prisoners. Is the big house the new Guantanamo bay?
Right after this report on Environmental activist riots against Black Mesa research, due to fears of an ecologically catastrophic resonance cascade, Reporter April O’Neil talks with inside man Gordon Freeman.
I laughed heartily.
Every time I read that last greed-rage panel, I laugh harder than the time before…
Please for the love of all things manly, never, ever retire.
Monday’s WILL suck again.
So if the whole of them are together… does that mean they’re all gay, since they make up a rainbow? o_o
I saw the movie, but I don’t get it. Really I don’t, someone mind explaining this to me?
In the comics there are several different Lantern colours aside form just Green/Willpower. There’s Red/Hate, Orange/Greed, Yellow/Fear, Green/Willpower, Blue/Hope, Indigo/Compassion, Violet/Love, Black/Death, and White/Life in total. A representative of each energy is attending a summit and debating the benefits of their choice power in much the same way you see current energy conferences debate the benefits and drawbacks of fossil fuels, bio diesel, nuclear power, and renewable energy sources like wind or hydro.
hehe. Pretty colors.
Ah, and I just started liking that sexy orange guy
Ehh, yess, communists, that’s the reason of all problems! *sarcasm mode on*
FUCK YEA, LANTERN CORPS! That is all.
Although, I think that Guy Gardner easily fits the manly-man-of-manly-manliness mold… in his own mind.
