MANLY TEARS
I have an immense respect for Remy’s extremely prolific rate of production and PEERLESS ability to hammer out real, tangible emotion onto these characters. And O LAWD that atmosphere. Look at that third panel, there are like three lines drawn in the back of that room with some tone slapped down and it FEELS like you’re hangin’ out in that bar listening to that dusty ol’ cowboy croon.
If you’ll excuse me, I think I have to go watch Honkytonk Man again.
I was also instructed to pass this along to those of you in the audience who were having a hard time placing the song he’s singing. I have to say, I also appreciate the way this takes care of pretty much all of the characters people keep saying need to run in this comic.
Thanks guys! There’ll be another new guest comic up tomorrow! And remember to check out more of Remy’s amaaaaazing stuff over at Pseudofolio!

Wasn’t expecting to see Rau from The Mark of Kri. Awesome character to see, even if only in a guest comic.
And I certainly wasn’t expecting anyone to recognize Rau right off the bat! Hats off to ya. Rau is indeed one of the manliest characters ever to grace a videogame, being basically a Polynesian Conan the Barbarian as if an animated cartoon… Actually now that I think of it, this kinda sounds right up your alley Coela.
Yeah, I loved the game. Just a pity I never got to play the sequel. Never got released in New Zealand. Still, I heard it has new characters, so no big loss.
The sequel was pretty much more of the same with a shittier control scheme. It was sort of fun playing as Baumusu, and Tati all grown up was interesting (as well as hot) but in the end it was sort of eh. If you’re a fan and can get it for cheap, pick it up. Otherwise steer clear.
I also recognized Rau immediately, The Mark of Kri is one of my favorite games. And yeah the sequel is nothing compared to the original, it was so glitchy and less interesting, despite the added characters.
*spits out drink all over best freind* WOLFWOOD?! Do you like TRIGUN bro?
Just askin’, because Vash and Wolfwood are two of the best shots in anime, that I’ve ever seen. Not including Spike from Cowboy Bebop, and Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist.
…I recognized him right off the bat :’3
Same
Wow, Cmdr. Badass crying, now I have seen everything.
‘Course it is allowed given the circumstances.
And Jared got what he deserved for being a dick ’bout it.
Indeed. Jared’s comment was very much ‘head-meet-table-shut-up’ worthy.
There is nothing manlier than silent, slow tears above wide, wide shoulders.
Ask Kenshiro.
Oh gawd, I know exactly what you mean! Fist of The North Star taught me that it’s possible to cry and still be manly about it. (link very related)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y91/kelzero/1179660823996.jpg
A limerick from Kenshiro to you:
Scars are red…
Bruises are blue…
Omae wa mo
Shindeiru.
What the f*ck are you sa-” *head explodes*
wow, even jared looks manlier in this one.
also lol.
I love this song so MUCH.
I LOVE IT
This is gorgeous I LOVE it! Gonna have to give this style a shot sometime soon!
I found this to be a particularly satisfying comic.
I concur.
dat ending
oh god dat ending
brb totally having seizures at how great the ending to that game was
It is totally fantastic!
I really really REALLY want to make some insightful and brilliant commentary on the artwork…but really, all I can think of to say is that those last 2 panels had me cracking up.
the commander shedding a tear makes him even more masculine in my eyes
awesome work, loving it
Is that Wander from Shadow of the Colossus in that middle panel there?
Does he count as manly? On the one hand he’s scrawny and can barely wield a sword. On the other hand he fights building sized stone giants in melee combat and wins.
its the big daddy you play as in bioshock 2 by the looks of it (awesome game btw, check it out)
shit sorry, posted reply on the TOTALLY wrong comment
Wander? yeah, he fought against all odds, he fought even though it’s killing him, he fought for his beloved girl, and he stabs collossis for breakfast.
Now, that is MANLY
Not to mention he takes down things the size of skyscrapers with a longsword and a horse, with judicious application of arrows where necessary.
I’m wondering who’s the man with the raven on his shoulder.
Shit, is that the original Turok?
I’d like to hear this song sung this way, by a man with a voice and a guitar. None of that violin and piano, and little wispy voices singing at once. Somebody who can sing with emotion.
And yeah, the painting is great. Conveys everything very well. I can’t help but feel that the linework should have been in a brown tone, though. Not that I know much about this sort of thing besides in theory.
Would this be better?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkAvVqjbUG8&feature=related
I actually agree with Cruxador, needs to sound a bit more rugged and manly, not even the original is enough. Maybe some classic country singer? I don’t know, the song is still good, tho.
Someone like johnny cash would be perfect.
Actually, I like to think that’s the Commander Badass world’s Johnny Cash, and he’s performing it with the same cadence of When The Man Comes To Town.
Cash is really one of the few musicians that fits the comic in my eyes.
I’m glad I didn’t have to be the first person to say that these lyrics deserve a different/better quality of musician.
Even if you were the first, you wouldn’t be alone. Cash just has that classic quality that makes any song sound more like an epic poem. (In this case epic being used in the classic sense.)
For those who have played the game, Perhaps Landon Ricketts voice would work?
I do agree to some degree that the music should be more powerful, with someone
Cash. But the original version is still very good.
and knowing that, and wanting to hear it with a stronger voice and just a guitar, i’ve
found this cover. It’s not like Cash is singing it, but it’s a very good cover:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXWFenMfSHI&feature=related
yeah, Cash was the first thought to my mind as well. Not that he’s the only one who could do it, I can think of a few others that would be great, but he’s the one that would fit it best I think.
not really.
Maybe something like this? It was the first song I thought of when you said man with a guitar. I think the whisky haze coming out of the voice would work well.
And just to stress what’s already been said, utterly fantastic comic.
I have not heard the original (Red Dead is on my long list of games to eventually buy.)
But I have a version of this song played by a man with his guitar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zQmjpT7Naw
I was thinking Ray Lamontagne would be a good fit for the song. Since Johnny Cash is no longer with us.
(for reference. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VBVqE-UtHw )
This was damn awesome.
I’m tempted to call this epic. And yes, I’m putting money into the epic jar. It’s so totally worth it.
Considering what you have to get through to finish the game and get the credits (and the song), I think “epic” use might be justified here.
Never before have tears this manly been wept.
;_;
How many guys do I know?
I see Master Chief, that Splinter Cell guy, Snake, I think that’s the Shadow of Colossus guy, and Gordon Freeman. So who’s the Robot with Chief and the Asian dude with the hawk?
Huh. Coulda sworn it was Big Boss or whatever and not snake and the robot thing is Big Daddy from bioshock? I recognize the Indian(I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s suppsed to be; not asian) dude with the hawk is from that one game… Can’t remember it’s title at hte moment…
He’s not Indian, he’s polynesian. Maori, to be exact. Or at least, a fantasy counterpart to Maori. That’s Rau from the Mark of Kri, one of the best PS2 hack and slash games out there. It’s dirt cheap these days, you ought to check it out if you like Conan-ish action games.
Sweet! Games are getting more and more exotic!
Actually, that is Snake, Naked Snake, known as BIG BOSS. So, yeah, you were right.
My first thought was Revolver Ocelot, or Old Snake.
The “robot” looks to be the big daddy you play as in bioshock 2, but i don’t know about the other guy
Oh I thought it would be some megaman character or something. The lines on his helmet window look like cartoon eyes.
Isn’t it John Marston on stage?
Fairly sure Nick Furry is there. The not Ultimate version.
Oh damn, everyone is going furry these days… :P
Actually, I think that’s supposed to be Big Boss as seen at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4
i feel like in the third panel, one of the scribbly characters is reminiscent of Kratos..
Halo isn’t a man though, he’s a robot
Isn’t he a cybernetic Supersolider?
you got trolled. in b4 “where is metroid? he’s a manly guy”
Sadly, Samus is manlier by deed than a lot of the namby pamby male protagonists in games nowadays. We’re just fortunate that the influence hasn’t spread further than it has… thank goodness for Bioshock and God of War.
…. Isn’t Samus female?
Yes. That’s exactly the point.
Cue rimshot!
No. Supersoldiers that were genetically altered in supersuits.
This song is worthy of manly tears.
My favorite so far. Bravo. Brought a little tear to my eye.
Awesome seeing Psudo’s stuff here. Great job all around!
i love you :’)
*single tear* this is an amazing strip <3
Manly tears were wept. Besides, Sam Fisher and Big Boss in the comic? That’s amazing.
I’d put a tip in the epic jar if we got a wallpaper of this…
Oooh, it’s Sam Fisher… I thought it was some miner dude… :)
I don’t think the Commander would actually hit Jared in canon strips though, would he? I don’t think he’d need to.
I love his Question Duck and I can’t even understand WHY.
Oh right and the comic itself. Nothing that hasn’t been said. Fan-freakin’awesome-tastic. Even Jared looks so damn awesome it’s almost unsettling.
If we are guessing scribbles too, panel nine has a hooded guy. Could be Altair… or one of them “brothers”.
I think I spy a Guile in the first panel too. Who the hell wears that hair? Excluding movies?
Maybe it’s a sign for future Jared perhaps? manly Jared replacing retired Cmdr Badass?
Maybe the guy from Prototype?
Nah, the peak of his hood’s too pointy. It’s Altair, I’m pretty sure. It’s not fancy enough to be Ezio.
Has to be Altair. Ezio is not manly. He is simply macho.
Btw… Love. Bought the soundtrack on release day and can’t quit listening to it.
I think you’re right. He has the popped collar Mercer is known for.
…. this is one of my bands songs, and i couldn’t be more psyched for the piece. fucking great.
I was in love with the song upon first hearing it driving a long way from home. It’s really a fantastic song and I love you guys for it. Just about the softest saddest song about shooting a whole lotta people I think I’ll ever hear.
I’m very glad to hear you liked the comic, it was a real pleasure to work from those lyrics but I was worried I wouldn’t do your great work justice.
….we LOVE the comic… I was in the studio recording, and my writing partner chris came in at like 4 in the morning to show it to me…. we were both pretty blown away. Hit me up on faebook, BrianLiesegang, would love to talk about getting a copy of it for framing at the studio, and my brother works for bethesda, so we are also video game junkies as well and caught all the references…. but your work totally made our day… thanks!
And I’d love to send you guys a copy!
But alas, I’m not on Facebook. I’d love to work it out though, if anything I could send you guys the full resolution image.
As it is, it’s also a very odd proportion, being about 5 and a half inches wide by 22 inches tall. It wouldn’t be too hard to split it in half though, and push the print size a bit more horizontally.
this is so brilliant. seriously i am at a loss for words to describe just how much i love this page. Remy you are awesome same goes for you Coelasquid
*Cries manly tears*
Oh Jared you deserved that. Good thing you are made of rubber or noodles or something and won’t get seriously hurt.
Try this, put the song on in a background tab and follow along with the lyrics in the comic! Makes it even better.
We love you dearly, Miss, but if you keep this up, we are unfortunately going to have a mutiny. Seriously… I just… wow. Anyone who doesn’t listen to Dead Man’s Gun while reading this webcomic is missing out…
wait, mutiny, what?
Mutiny? Wat. I’m perfectly okay with the guest strips so far. They look friggin amazing.
Awesome song, awesome comic, and definitely a wonderful addition to the amazing stuff Coelasquid has done herself. (I love this comic so hard.)
Gordon Freeman Nick Furry and the Master Chief all getting teary eyed. That’s how touching this song is. I’m so glad my big bro showed me this comic. It’s EPI- I mean -AWESOME!
Awww poor John Marston ;A; He’s so cool…I really love this page!
Jared doesn’t have a right to say stuff like that. he DESERVED that table to facee relaionship! ;A; Bravoooooo
Manly tears.
They have been shed.
I think Guile is in the first panel, next to the Big Daddy, but then in the 3rd panel he’s nowhere to be seen…
I was, in a way, genuinely moved, until the last two panels, where I burst into laughter. Good strip.
Beautiful comic.
*manly tears*
Jared ruined it.. not just in a funny way, but really ruined it.
Damnit, Jared
Dear God, I was cryin’ manly tears after that sone. Thank you Coelasquid for putting that link up. It resonated so well with all the guest charicters on this strip… and he got almost every manly charicter I could think of.
People are praising this up and down, but I guess I’ll point out some smaller things I love.
Cool to see the two besuited guys, Chief and Alpha, bonding.
Sam and snake are just like “Yeah man”. Probably talking shop as well.
Last, I almost got seriously choked up at Gordon Freeman’s face, that song was hitting him hard.
My favorite guest bit so far. Beautiful style, and wonderful little scene.
Wanderererer….. Yeeeeeeeeees. You don’t get much more manly than running around a huge isolated land fighting giant monsters while slowly sacrificing your humanity to save the girl from death itself. Also you have to hunt for own food with a bow. Bows are hard to puuuuull.
I was touched too. Love that the wanderer made an appearance.
Thank ya kindly everyone!
It was a real pleasure to doodle this up, especially for a comic as excellent as Manly Guys for Coeala.
And to be fair to Jared, I may have written him a bit out of character. I basically gave him that kind of internet wise guy comment that every teenager I know has made once or twice to kill the mood. And of course, a violent headslam may not be normal for the calm and patient Commander. But well… I was laughing a little as I drew it so I took that as a sign.
You were pretty spot on, in my opinion.
I applaud you and this awesome comic, good sir or madam.
Oh, don’t worry, Jared will have his moments of surliness… And, yanno… Commander can only let it slide for so long before the negative reinforcement comes out…
He did almost lose it when he brought Chuck in his House of Brando. This was probably just TOO much, he made a serious mood killer.
In terms of Jared’s looks, it looks like a follow up to Vorked’s Guest Comic.
Cause Suddenly, Jared Had Muscles.
I think anything seems like muscles comparatively after you’re used to his noodle body.
Are you…are you the question duck guy? O_O
Pseudo, Is there any chance of Tango Tango getting a full treatment and web published? That’s certainly worth a sizable donation at the least. Your work is fantastic at minimum! keep up the utterly fantastic and mindblowing work! I saw the Chapter 5 page 1 and I freaked saying “Where’s the rest of it!?!?!?!?!?”
And yes, Pseudo is the “Question Duck” artist.
Just.Perfect. And Wander is indeed a badass
Was I the only one who mistook our cowboy as Jim Raynor?
That was my first thought as well…
Is Jared wearing a
a what? I’m on the edge of my seat here…
He has a 1-up t-shirt I noticed.
Noble Six, John Marston, Subject Delta, Gordon Freeman, so many other people, and one hell of a song. Beautiful.
The whole manly tears thing reminds me that the guest comics should really bring in Major Armstrong.
Excellent.
I’m going to postulate the notion that the Engineer was not present because of stylistic reasons.
This was a truly awesome and moving strip. I love Red Dead Redemption and that ending was just amazing. Honsetly Jared fully deserved the face slam into the table.
I love Pseudo’s work. Always ace stuff.
The only thing I can say I don’t like about this strip is that it reminds me how terminally behind I am with games.
Psuedonym now has a name and a website. i feel like all the mystery in my life is dying….
I think she had a DA forever, I just forget what it was.
yeah i’d heard of it, but never found it
My god, the one comic MC was in was the most beutiful one.
you hear that? that is the sound of my heart exploding
The colors and atmosphere are wonderful, and I love the sketchiness of the line work.. I wish I could say more about this, but all I can think is, “Hrrrrrrng, it’s Big Boss.” Someone please put me out of my Metal Gear obsessed misery.
I know how you feel, ‘cos I already passed through this. It sucks ‘cos I couldn’t talk about any other thing that wasn’t Metal Gear related. But it passes someday. You should start playing other things, so that the “Metal Gear Effect” goes away faster. And, believe me, Red Dead really helped me A LOT.
This comic calls for more Ryan Bingham. I think you guys can agree that Johnny Cash doesn’t need to be the Go-To voice. There’s so many ncredible artists, singers, lyricists, more relatable choices. Ryan Bingham, Lucero, Jamey Johnson, Chris Knight – to name a few.
Ryan Bingham – Weary Kind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8monRJzzvU
Oh, that’s the Jeff Bridges version! Oh Jeff Bridges :3 Here’s Ryan Bingham, the original artist of the song that Jeff Bridges sings there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soGNAEg1zps
This comic is great, one of the best if I may say so.
This was my favorite one out of the bunch.
The art is stunning, the joke is hilarious after such a tender moment, and the panel of Gordon Freeman crying is beautiful TT_TT I almost cried because of it.
I was so excited to see Gordan Freeman in this comic, and then I remembered it’s not an offical coelasquid comic. Oh well, still an amazing comic.
I love this…I actually got a little emotional when I read this with the music.
Bravo, psudonym for an amazing comic…and thank you Coelasquid for putting up an amazing guest comic…
Im going to go cry manly tears now…
This is really, really great.
For some reason I get the feeling that Jim Raynor should be in this comic.
I actually almost started tearing up when I played the song and read the comic at the same time. It’s still manly if you cry, as long as they’re tears of blood!…. or I have eye cancer, I dont know.
I recognize all of the video game characters except for the one before Freeman, I thought it was Shiek at first, but that doesn’t make sense, can someone help me out
It kind of looks like the guy from Shadow of the Colossus.
Conan was indifferent to feelings, becuase he is a self-interested man with better things to do, when he found the Estro-version of Deadman’s Gun, which is Sara Bareilles’ Winter Song. Conan is an expert on risking all for fortune, not emotional continuance, but Conan feels that Crom himself(damn his black god;s heart) could not put these two songs back to back on a playlist without weeping great, silent tears in amounts that might drown Conan’s horse(whom he hates, that nag).
Cowboy: John Marsden (Red Dead Redemption)
Panel 1: Guile’s hair does seem to be present.
Panel 3: Master Chief (Halo series) and Big Daddy (Bioshock games)
Panel 4: Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell series) and Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid series)
Panel 6: Rau (The Mark of Kri, apparently)
Panel 7: Wander (Shadow of the Colossus)
Panel 8: Gordon Freeman (Half-Life series)
Panel 9: Could be Altair (Assassin’s Creed) or Alex Mercer (Prototype) sitting next to a….robot?
Panel 12-13: Jared’s Tabletop Faceplant = hilarious.
Commander Badass: It doesn’t matter why you fight, if you just have a reason to fight.
Well, you’ve done it. I’ve listened to the song for about four days out of the last six. Haven’t played the game, but it’s easily the best song of the year.
dont make me cry again i had a hard time seeing him die
I recognized everyone save the two blokes that are in the panels before Gordon Freeman. Should I be ashamed? D:
Personally, I want to see Marston around the office more…I feel he and Canada Guy can talk shop over skinning deer or something else along those lines…Plenty of potential for manliness there.
Where is this bar? I now need to give it my patronage.
i bought red dead redemption because of this comic.
Me Gusta.
That’s beautiful
So, is the guy from Panel 6 a Maori or summing like that?
I just finished RDR today, and suddenly the comic transforms from beautiful artwork to just straight up beautiful. Manly tears were shed.
Far left, third panel: is that Master Chief?
yup. Where’s Arbiter, though?… D:
Cant unsee… Bomberman, 3rd panel, next to Master Chief.
sweet. you even remembered to put Sam Fisher in there… :’ )
Nothing tender there, though it is nice to see the men show that they are not afraid to let out once in a while.
I’ve… got something in my eye. Really.
samus and subject delta….(sniff) awwwwwww
thats not master cheif its samus……right
cheif has a pointier helmet…
This comic… This song… So beautiful….
I’m.. yep, I’m crying.
*snaps fingers after song ends*
Thought Gordon Freeman was kicked out, due to being a nerd :P
Guest strips aren’t canon.
Who is that guy singing?
Feel free to rage if I missed something obvious.
Deadman’s Gun from Red Dead Redemption. I think the band’s name is Ashtar Command or something. Great song. :)
Er…I meant the character in the comic…actually.
Love this art style, what kind is it?
I still think this one needs some Jim Raynor.
Id listen to a John Marston album.
… I agree with Jared.
I’m allowed to criticise guest-strips, right?
Cos I don’t like this one.
In situations like this I’d be the one guy who loudly proclaims “BOORRRRIINNGGG” while walking out.
Just out of curiosity are you the kind of self-absorbed, unlikable fuckwad who doesn’t understand why people don’t like you or the kind that does and just doesn’t care?
Because if I go over to someone’s house for a get-together and they made this nice German chocolate cake and everyone there’s so excited to eat this cake, I don’t piss on the cake because I don’t happen to like German chocolate cake.
It’s just basic fuckin’ etiquette, bro. Don’t piss on people’s cake.
Holy fuckin’ jesus CHRIST. Did you bother to read your own comment after talking about ‘etiquette’? You can’t tell someone “LEARN SOME ETIQUETTE, YOU FUCKWAD.” That shit don’t fly.
Same. Not to that extent, I’d plug in my iPod or something until they were done though. The lyrics are good, sure, but if you actually LISTENED to the song it sounds like something straight out of Simon and Garfunkle. They don’t mesh well.
Not gonna lie, when I read this this first time I put it to the tune of Linkin Park’s “The Messenger” in my mind for some reason, and it actually doesn’t come out so bad.
I see a shaven Iskandar with large eyebrows ._.
Meh, went to listen to the song… not what I’d picture would be playing in a dive. Now, something like ‘In Time’ by Mark Collie from the Punisher movie… THAT would make more sense. Dark traveler with his six-string, playin’ something straight out of what you’d expect Johny Cash would come up with.
Five years down the line from release and I still have this bookmarked.
Excellent comic.
