Don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone

Lotsa “Oh man Navi was annoying I wish she’d die” comics out there, very few “Navi was actually a very useful companion in the OoT-verse.”
I encourage people who believe the former to complete the game without using the Z-target.
So yeah, here’s some Zelda to celebrate Skyward Sword. Which I’ve already gone over my initial impressions of on tumblr. Only got to play for about an hour, then I had to stop so I could draw Zelda comics.
And I got interviewed over at Nerdcenaries! First half up today, more tomorrow!
Discussion (225) ¬
Awww yeah! Thank you for addressing the necessity of Navi. I really didn’t think she was THAT annoying.
Where did the name Navi come from?
My best guess would be “Navigator”.
I actually really like Navi and i have never found her or Tatl annoying :)
well there IS a reason we deal with her….still hate how she’s always piping in with the obvious..don’t wish she’d die…but I do wish she’s SHUT UP every now and then.
Well, one could simply not clap their hands. That may take care of it.
That. Just that. She’s great to target, and to talk to people (Link’s a social outcast), it’s the constant stopping everything to point the obvious that’s annoying.
And who needs Navi to target? I fight well without her.
Using the grappling hook, though…
Er, she is probably there so if you forget what you were doing, like say, after stopping playing the game for a while, picking it up like a year later…there isn’t really a quest log or anything…so…”oh crap where was I???…”
Hey! Hey! Listen!
anyone else figure out how to use a mute button?
And miss out on the awesome soundtrack? Hell, Navi’s worth putting up with for the music.
I second that one, Tcomm Lion. The music in OoT was incredible, and suited the mood of the game pretty well.
Specially the Song of Storms. =D
That’s a problem that seems a bit too common with game developers & D&D GM’s. They give you something extrememly useful, but at the cost of your dignity & sanity being challenged throughout the whole game.
…Pretty clever way to constantly troll the players with no mercy, if you ask me…
Navi could become annoying, yes, with her “HEY!” or “Listen!” but that never discounted her usefulness. I always heeded her squeaky advice. I actually missed her when Majora’s Mask came out and then we had Tatl. Navi was so much better than Tatl in retrospect.
Nah, Tatl’s better.
Yeah. Tatl doesn’t go “HEY! LISTEN!” She jingles. …That said, I wish she wouldn’t insult me…
Tatl’s definitely better.
Nah, Tattl had spunk and personality. Navi just shouted a lot and plainly stated the obvious. Actually, I’m wondering if she was retarded or something. Maybe that’s why she didn’t have a Kokori friend and got assigned to Link.
^^^^^^^^^^THIS
I actually really liked Tatl. When I was a kid I kind of had this weird crush on her, which now I look back on and wonder if I was insane or something.
Tatl never gave as many tips as Navi. She doesn’t give as useful advice as Navi and to be honest, I find her “spunk” annoying. One doesn’t have to be a jackass to be spunky. Therefore, inclined to agree with you.
To be honest, the only helpers more useful than Navi are the ones that help Toon Link: The King of Red Lions, Tetra, The Minish Cap, etc. Oot-verse helpers are no match for Navi.
I likses all the fairieses. :(
I really enjoy the nerd world problems you address in this comic :D they’re the sort of things I discuss in a bars with a beer in my hand and a bunch of people clapping hands to their forehead saying, “Oh, man, I KNOW!” Thanks for bringing the bar to work, sort of. :)
Oh you’re just going to LOVE the companion in Skyward Sword. She bitches ALL THE TIME and doesn’t help out in combat at all.
The companion in Skyward Sword is pretty useful in her own way. Giving you analysis of opponents right down to how well you fight against them, telling you how well your current set up will work in in an area, and offering a bunch of hints and rumors. Plus she can be pretty funny.
She Dances/Skates/Sings pretty good too.
I heard she was Nintendo’s attempt to have their own benevolent Glados.
That would explain why I was getting such a GlaDOS feel from her voice. It doesn’t endear me to her because it’s actually kinda creepy to me.
I like this idea far too much.
The Fairy Enrichment Center is required to remind you that the Pushable Companion Stone cannot talk. In the event that it does talk The Fairy Enrichment Centre asks you to ignore its advice.
Best short paragraph I’ve ever seen in these comments :D
So I’m not the only person that calls her ‘GlaFi’?
You seem to do a lot with Zelda. Not that you have in a while; but it seems like he was in many of your earlier works. Is Zelda a particular favorite of your or is it just easier to pick on?
Your strips aren’t just funny. I also find my self learning about things I otherwise would know nothing about. Thank you for making this nerd more well rounded. :D
His name is Link. Zelda is the princess.
I know that. When I was referring to Zelda I meant the game as a whole. I referred to the game mostly as “it”. When I started to talk about Link I should have said Link instead of “he”. It was unnecessary for you to correct me as well as annoying as seeing there was a comment I had my hopes up that my ACTUAL question was being addressed. Instead you tell me something I know because you assumed I didn’t know it based on an error I made while typing at 4:28 am. There are plenty of other people being wrong on the internet elsewhere who actually want to be corrected. Go find them and leave the insomniacs in peace.
Also, another error I made was the place this comment wound up so if there is a way to move it out from where it is I think that would be nice.
Lol, it’s that time of month again…
Also, I agree, the strip from two weeks ago about Mortal Kombat made me research EVERYTHING MK related. Makes me wonder if I had a terrible childhood…
Cool story bro.
There is a 90% chance that this assessment is correct. Don’t ask me how I calculated this number. I am a machine (?) and therefore capable of calculating probability in situations when there are no variables in which to actually calculate. Beep boop I am a robot.
Err, good luck with combat without Fi.
Actually, I’ve gotten past the first couple of hours without her, easily, because this inspired me to try it out. When I get back to uni and can steal my friend’s copy of the game, I’ll carry on, but I’m adamant that I’m going to fight for as long as I can without targeting or asking her for advice.
i hardly ever use z targeting. i like the challenge of aiming.
Yeah, it’s the same with me. I liked the game a lot better since you actually COULD aim carefully and not just press a button or two and just run around. I never though Navi especially annoying, more like I hated that scream young Link makes all the time in OoT.
“NYAAAAAAAH!”
And somehow I get the vibes that Link is not Coela’s favorite hero, same with the older comic with Canon and flower pots…
I can’t disagree with that though, I really don’t like how Link is handled with his fanbase and in games he’s pretty much a vegetable.
I actually like Link a lot more than this comic makes it seem, I think I just use him as a venue for the assholeish things that pervade the Zelda fanbase
You mean Gannon? You might mean Cannon but i’m not sure.
I actually found the game _easier_ without Z Targeting.
Do you know how many enemies only turn on their battle AI when they are targeted?
So many enemies drop their guard as soon as you fight them un-Z Targeted.
But I tend to find OoT WAY too damned easy to play, that I start challenging myself. My latest one involves having Kid Link using only his knuckles. How do you use Knuckles as a weapon? Break a Deku Stick at the exact right time. It stays broken in your hands, and use of it looks like you are punching stuff.
Yeah… I hate Navi… but I love Tatl and Midna. Especially Midna. Something about an imp completely doming the frak out of a furry… er… werewolf… touches me in a few special spots that I shall grab a doll if any of you want me to point to them.
I actually like most of the companions in each Zelda game, even Navi. I just wish some of them would have an option to turn off hints.
As a side note, is anyone else pissed off that Link is RIGHT HANDED in Skyward Sword? As a fellow lefty, I feel kind of put off…
If you played Twilight Princess on the Wii, he was a northpaw then too.
I really wish there were an option to play with the normal controller on all wii games. If I wanted to move, I’d go outside and play bucketball. Or something.
(Video games are supposed to distract me from things like “Oh, hi brain… We can’t stand up today without Problems? You are going to make my blood pressure get weird when I move more than 5 pounds of myself at a time? That’s really lame, brain.” They allow me to say, “Fine, I will do something else. Oh, hey, my fingers still work.”)
When motion controls are involved, you need to account for player handedness (and not just the majority of players are right-handed write-off). It wasn’t that big of a deal in Twilight Princess, but I can’t imagine playing this game left-handed (given how Link mirrors your movement), nor could I imagine performing the trickier maneuvers with my off-hand.
You can play Skyward Sword without moving much, actually. You don’t even have to point at the TV. I’ve honestly played Skyward Sword laying down. It’s because of the new pointer system.
yes, but the main mark of the Hero in the zelda universe is being left handed, almost no one else is left handed in that universe, him being right handed means that he is not truly of the hero’s line
Um… wat? not being left-handed means he’s not part of “the hero’s line”? I have three siblings. One of them is left handed. Does that mean he’s not my brother? No. It means he’s left-handed and my brother.
Calen, reread post and note the line “In the Zelda universe”. She is talking about the game. I doubt you live in the Zelda universe, and unless you do, it has nothing to do with you and your brothers.
Thesaya, my point was that being left or right handed doesn`t really make a difference in whose “line” a character is from. The fact is, the games are about characters from “the hero’s line”. You might as well say, “Link isn’t exactly blonde, is he? So obviously, he’s not of the hero’s line” because in most games, Link is blonde. If you’re going by things like right/left-handedness and appearance, you need to take another look at the cover of the game.
left handedness is genetic, not all descendents of a person who is left handed will be left handed themselves but, it does greatly increase the chances of it happening, the only other character who has been left handed to my knowledge in the entire zelda series is the HERO’s Shade from Twilight Princess(which no matter what you say, i’ll only count the gamecube version of it which is obviously the one that was meant to be the real one)
I wish I knew the name of the study, but the last research I had heard suggested that handedness is likely not genetic or learned, but rather a strange wild card. Animals display the same preference for one paw over the other, and in an experiment done with genetically identical cloned mice, there was pretty close to a 50/50 split of “left handed” mice and “right handed” mice. They suggested that humans display less of an even split because the world has been designed with such a bias towards right-handed people that children are subconsciously herded towards learning to do things with their right hand at a young age, even if their parents didn’t actively intend to. Right down to little things like parents putting a crayon in their toddler’s right hand when they drop it, or the number of tools designed to fit a right-handed grip.
The research I read last said that it was genetic, but I guess anything’s possible regarding that, I mean every attempt at explaining how humans are able to ride bikes that I’ve seen has been disproven shortly afterward and there are so many other things which are as of yet unexplainable
one of my science teachers claimed that it is based on a combination of left-brain/right-brain dominance and which hand you first grasp something. supposedly whichever hand you first grasp something will be your dominate hand. If you reach out and grasp some thing you will the hand opposite of your brain dominance, right brain=left hand. supposedly if someone places something in your hand at that time they can screw up your eye hand coordination for life if they place in the wrong hand.
I was told this eight years ago and have not done any research on it. My teacher could have been testing to see if any of us do research on it, i know another one of my teachers has done something like that. so no i’m not BSing you but i will admit i could have been BSed on this.
The research I’ve read suggests that a likelihood is inherited. There are other genetic traits like that. You inherit some loaded dice instead of a number.
I’m not a lefty but I do sympathize with your plight. I live with a left-handed cousin who I think wanted to play Skyward Sword.
Of ALL games not to make a left-handed mode…
The ironic part is that in Twlight Princess, it was not so much important, since it was a port, and the controler’s movement just activates an attack that can be used with just the control’s buttons normally. I really wonder if they couldn’t just program both left/right animations in it.
Now, Skywards Sword is trickier, with the whole mirroing movements and weak points thing.
I heard that they actually mirrored the whole game for the non-japanese market, so internationals went east when japanese went west.
I want my Links left-handed, and I’m not even left-handed.
i was shocked when every one called me an ass hole of a nerd for pointing this simple fact for the first time
Haha. Funny because it is true. Dunno if Raid would work. They have a can for ants, another for roaches and spiders… None for fairies. D:
All kidding aside though, I really like the large panel with the scarecrow. Very pretty and a good angle too! Nice perspective. ^^
Bee raid would probably work, maybe wasp spray. If that didn’t work, just take a lighter and the can of spray, and TADAAA: mini-flamethrower! What fairy can take that?
Also, the Zelda games on the original GBA were WAY more fun, the DS versions’ controls were so much harder to master, even with the targeting.
You’re forgetting; Without Navi, you wouldn’t be able to target Navi to rid yourself of her. =O
I personally never found Navi that annoying, but upon hearing how everyone else seemed to think she was, I began to believe that the reason why Navi was the auto-targeting was because Link found her just as annoying and was actually trying to shoot her.
Haha, I was just thinking about it today. It’s just perfect.
Spider poison is people poison! Should work fine on fairies!
I liked Navi. She was a plucky fairy who didn’t afraid of goddamn anything. I didn’t even know she was ‘supposed’ to be annoying to players until The Internet.
lol. yeah, first time through, she wasn’t annoying at all. I was um… what, twelve? I needed all the help I could get. But then OoT was AWESOME. and AMAZING. And I played it over. and over. and over.
and then she got annoying.
The nostalgia from this comic ;__;
Another amazing one done. Good job :)
I agree that Navi was pretty useful and her bitching wasn’t so much as the newer sidekicks like Midna and Fi.
Hehe I love the expressions on Link, you draw him like some ***hole who whines a lot. That’s the first thing I noticed it in the comic with Ganondorf.
didja notice that like never whines in the game as he is a silent (mostly except for the grunting) hero? so basically the ***hole part comes from all the whiney players who cant appreciate a good thing till its gone…..
SKYWARD SWORD!!!!
Well excuuuuuuuuuuuse me, Princess.
In my mind he will ALWAYS be the whiny excuse me 80’s Link. Just to mess up his ‘heroic’ appearance in the game.
Hey, I loved Midna. Her black humor was so amusing.
She’s great, but without her Link’s more of a boss. Especially Skyward Sword he seems to take control of the situations with the main enemies.
Meh. I always figured Z-targeting was a thing Navi went along with, not a thing she directly enabled.
All he’s doing is looking at his enemy. Unless he’s suffered a severe head trauma, he should be able to do that on his own.
And I always used Link’s ears to gauge where arrows and deku seeds would go. Z-Target wasn’t really necessary there.
Funny comic, all the same.
Wait, maybe that was the boomerang.
I have to go play that game again.
Nope, you could only Z target because of navi.
In the fight against Ganondorf near the end, he uses his magic to stop navi getting close and you can’t Ztarget anymore
The first time I played through OoT, I really didn’t use Z targeting. It’s been a long time, so I don’t really remember why…I probably forgot about it or something. It was…so bad. I had a ridiculously hard time with everything. Everything killed me. However, I wasn’t bothered in the first Ganondorf fight when he bans Navi…I didn’t even realize what difference it made at the time. Now? Now I know.
Am i the only one who thought that Navi’s “hey listen” and “watch out” weren’t so much annoying as incredibly adorable, even after hearing them for hours?
Probably. I couldn’t deal with it for the brief amount of time my second-hand cartridge would let me play (it died every time I got to Hyrule Field. I don’t know anything about the OoT world after that bit).
But then I was extremely frustrated since I was essentially stuck playing Kokiri Forest forever.
My problem wasn’t so much the “hey hey hey listen hey!” as the little flashing signal for “Navi wants to tell you something.” I’m a little obsessive about that sort of thing; I HAVE to check what she’s trying to tell me every time, even though I know what it’ll be.
Agreed. ‘Cause y’know what, Navi? I really DON’T care what Saria would have to say about this. You don’t have to ask me over and over and over and over. I’d rather you tell me something new.
Seriously, Navi. Just because we’re saving the world doesn’t mean we should let basic social skills go down the drain. Come on, it’s like, an entire day’s walk to Lake Hylia, would it kill you to have a conversation?
(Sometimes I think Link would have talked more in the game if Navi had just once asked him how his day was going. Lolololol)
The only annoying part was in the Deku Tree when you couldn’t just not press the button. I’ve tried non-targeting runs and it is HARD.
I could look at your work on facial expressions all day long.
Hear hear. It’s one of the more unique (to me at least) things about this comic. Well that and.. pretty much all the rest. Ehum. I think I misplaced my point somewhere here.. Well whatever. Good comic as per usual :)
Absolutely. The only problem I ever had with Navi was when she told me where to go when I was already there. But hey, maybe I didn’t know where I was going, and in that case it would’ve helped a lot. And not only does she tell you where everything you might possibly think is interesting is, but she goes color-coded as well. In my book, Navi’s one of the best sidekicks I’ve ever had.
I’ve actually always loved Navi and didn’t find her annoying at all.
Perhaps I’m a bit odd?
Besides, her voice is rather cute.
So Link really is a Jackass? I thought that the first Zelda related comic might have just simply been a bit of an out-of-character moment for him.
Weird stuff happens when you give the silent characters a voice.
Honestly, in Zeldaverse I prefer the take on Link that he’s duty-bound sincere, and at least a little naive. But for the sake of MGDMT, yeah, he’s a dick.
You,ma’am, have made my day with this. I expect to see more asshole Link in the future.
I’ve always thought of him as a playboy, since around Link to the past.
The proof (in my head) is when he was running away from Ruto in OOT. I claim that he fears commitment.
Hmm, considering how Link usually looks pretty I’m guessing he gets a pass in the comic because the character himself is… manly? Or maybe Link is just too awesome.
I never considered Navi annoying, I blame VGcats for spreading that depiction. I was actually sad to see her go at the end.
I never thought Navi was annoying. To me annoying was inability to skip text/cut scenes.
Wind Waker Link didn’t need no stinkin’ companion to Z-target, and Twilight Princess Link only needed help with that as a wolf.
When I was a kid I hated z targetting, I honestly think I did complete the game without using it. I can still remember how horrible it was to hookshot morpha and hit Ganons tail.
When i got back to playing it recently i found out that it is impossible to accomplish as a child. Just like playing rpg games in a different lenguage(I’m brazilian, we had to guess what the fuck we were supposed to do since none of my friends spoke english)
I still complete the game without z-targeting. I have impeccable aim with the bow and hook shot and it seriously made Dark Link laughable.
Seriously, children, fight him without Z-targeting. Takes 3 or 4 hits with the biggorron sword.
For the record: Navi have a bad image BEFORE VG cats.
I hated her when I was 7.
I hate her now, when I’m 21.
“BITCH I WANT TO LOOK AT SOMETHING! NOT TALK TO YOU!”
Oh God, I lost it on the first panel alone, the rest was just overkill. At this rate I’ll laugh before checking the site.
I’m a bit surprised at your reaction towards the controller. Coelasquid. I just checked the game yesterday, surprised of what Gamespot had reviewed on it, and I was completely in love with how well it responded. The bird thing was just plain shit to me, even if I had a airforce-sim joystick (and the falling down from great heights controllers are awkward as hell), but the combat, pointing and such felt really solid and responsive. I quickly dismissed the reviewer as “A man that has not realized his early stage of Parkinson’s”, or just did calibrations awfully.
I, personally, am not a Zelda fanboy, or even own a Wii. Now I’m gonna have to get some people to try this thing too. Explaining to others that the nunchuck only has an acceloremeter and what this entails could help, but the fact is this shouldn’t need STUDY to PLAY.
Lastly: What the FREAKIN’ HELL does the Stamina Bar brings to the game?! At the very least limit it to COMBAT or something! JESUS! I know, I know, it worked for a puzzle on the “Earth” (more like Fire) dungeon, but it’s all around unnecessary everywhere else given the track record in Zelda games. Nightfall would’ve caught you trice before getting to Hyrule for the first time from Kokiri Forest!
SKYWARD SWORD!!!!!
now you gotta swing your sword for real. trollolol
also playing the game without z targeting is do-able but very very annoying.i need my quick turns and backflips and how else am i supposed to beat dark link?!!?
With the hammer.
Din’s fire and biggoron or hammer.
You’re actually not supposed to use z-targeting on Dark link. The idiot dosen’t mimic you if you don’t.
That’s what they meant by ‘DON’T LOOK AT HIM!’
So next time you fight dark link, just swing your sword at him as he pops out of the ground and runs at you. No z-targeting. Most difficult ‘boss’ becomes a piece of cake.
Haven’t seen Link in this comic in a long time. Like his first (and only other) appearance, he comes off as a complete douche bag.
all he really has to do is say he doesn’t believe in fairies and not clap.
i actually play zelda games on a modded psp…. and because of hardware issues i have the sound off… so.. navi is actually pretty ignorable. :P protip with navi.. mute the system
Except if you mute the system, you miss out on everything audio about Zelda. And if you aren’t listening to the music in a Zelda game, I don’t think the game is worth playing.
just buy the soundtrack.
This isn’t particularly manly.
Be careful, you’re drifting off-message!
if he doesn’t believe in faires and clap how will he be protected from STD’s….
Ba dum dum kish!
Being incessantly pestered is a small price to pay to be able to hit shit.
hmm, thinking back replaying Ocarina of Time on the 3ds left me with less opportunities to hear her prattle on. I kind of miss it. Also try aiming on that ridiculous little handheld and then praise Navi for the gift that she is.
Am I forgetting something, or is this only the second Zelda strip we’ve had so far?
This is the epitome of manliness.
Man gets angry for some simple suggestion. Then refuses to admit he actually does need the help. Suffers the consequences because of his pride.
Lol trufax!
This is so wrong of you!
He is mad because he was given directions!
No real man takes directions! Directions makes us ANGRY!
I don’t think it’s possible to complete the game without ever using z-targeting. Since a coup[le bosses require you to lock on in order to hit them.
That being said, outside of those specific cases where it’s mandatory, the z-targeting is quite possible to avoid using.
You know, I was kind of ADD while I was playing OOT as a youngin’, so I really didn’t mind that she would tell me what to do ever two minutes or so. I would being running around in the field going “Oh look! A fence! I’m going to go state at it for no good reason!” but then there was Navi to tell my ass off…
I always did have some sort problem with Navi telling me to go to Death Mountain, though. Why the hell would I activity seek out a mountain called “Death”? Why would I want to go to its crater? Why would I want to climb it? I know I’m the hero, and I know I have the triforce of courage, but I’m also not suicidal…
A friend of mine recently finished his no-Z-target-no-lens-jump-attacks-only-also-hover-boots-and-giants-knife runthrough. It was…entertaining.
Wow, must of been tricky using jump attacks with no z-target, what with the fact you need to hold down z to use jump attacks.
No, I’m pretty sure the Z-Target would still be useful without Navi’s presence.
In OoT Navis IS the Z-Target, you can’t do it without her.
Y’know, that brings up a hilarious interpretation all its own.
What with Link only being accurate if he’s aiming at annoying ol’ Navi.
IIRC, Link couldn’t target without Tatl in Majora’s Mask, either.
Makes me wonder how he managed it in Wind Waker.
In Wind Waker it was L-Targeting, Link’s only need fairies for Z-targeting.
You completely missed my point.
This strip makes me so happy. <3
I've always loved Navi. I mean, sure she could be a little annoying but she's a great help. She's also really cute in the comics by Akira Himekawa. -takes Navi and hides in seed vault-
Oh. My. GOD. Coela, my love and admiration for you increased ten-fold.
The Zelda games are so empty without Navi. And Tatl didn’t compare. :(
I didn’t think Navi was annoying, but I’m gonna play without Z-targeting now just to see how difficult it really is. It sounds like fun!
At first I was like “Oh great another ‘hey listen’ comic” because every video game webcomic has to take a jab at that, BUT then you did something totally different and way more hilarious with it. I love you for that.
Oh, she’s useful as the z-target, but then the annoying ‘hey listen’ thing just pissed me off.
Then again, that dumb owl was way more annoying…
HATE THAT OWL. SO MUCH.
After reading some of the less “fanboyish” reviews on skyward sword, i’ve decided i’d rather go through the nightmare that is killing Zeta Prime on hard mode in Transformers:War For Cybertron (which is actually a really good game), then play with those horrible controls.
You know, I was with you until you mentioned War for Cybertron. Then I was suspicious of your taste in video games.
I enjoy the game, do you have a problem with that?
I’d also like to note that i’m not a generic “shooter fanboy” I actually prefer RPG/Strategy games, I just liked War For Cybertron.
I read that interview you linked to in your comment on the page and I agree with the statements you made about female character design in the industry. Anyone who actually steps outside their box will see millions of us all over the place. It’s a crutch saying we don’t exist to design bland female characters that cater to the lowest common denominator.
I’ve quit playing alot of games that just use tits as the core design in their female characters such as League of Legends, the newest Metroid, Mass Effects side characters (Giant clone butt). I just do not enjoy seeing it and have better things to do with my time. An Art II student that payed attention could flesh out a better character. Well their loss either way on the market.
Also agree, although I tend to be picky about what I read/play/watch anyway, so what I interact with tends to include solid, well-fleshed-out female characters. It was almost offensive actually, when just a few days ago I encountered that kind of stereotype in real life. I overheard the guy standing in line ahead of me (to get Zelda – lol, no strong female characters there, but it’s Zelda. I can forgive it almost anything) saying to the cashier how strange it was to “see a girl in here”. I kinda wanted to ask him when the last time he’d left his mom’s basement was – just to trade stereotype for stereotype. It was a distinctly uncomfortable experience.
Navi was a cool bro, I don’t get why people complain about her. I even got a shirt about her!
I like Navi, and I think she is underrated.
I thought Midna was a lot better, though.
So, I was never against Navi, personally, but I have this condition, and I have no choice but to play devils advocate. My sister, see? She’s not very good at games, but she beat twilight princess without even knowing that z-targeting was even an option. I don’t know how she did it, but holy crap, she did.
I liked navi, the “hey” “listen” thing just did a good job covering up my family saying the SAME THING!
Seriously though, I love your comic and would love to see you incorporate Richard Riddick into it some day! <3
Z-targeting? Please. Go three heart challenge without z-targeting.
When I was young, I thought Navi was great! She’d chime in, and I’d ask her what’s up, and she’d tell me the deal. Hey, Lon Lon Ranch time! Bet Epona’s waiting for us, gotta bust her out. It’s only now, as an adult playing for the umpeenth time, that I find her annoying. Can’t get her to shut up fast enough. I honestly have never held it against the character, though, she’s stuck in my memory as a really helpful character who tries super hard to get me out of binds! Seriously, I was dumb as a kid (and also as an adult), and she was great.
YAAAAAAAAAAY!! Now that I think about it, how much you wanna bet the only reason Link was able to use Navi to hit enemies was because he hated her so much he’d actually be aiming for NAVI instead of the enemy?
back when I played through OoT the first time, I kinda skimmed through the beginning bits without paying attention . . .that resulted in me not using Z-targeting at all. I was dumb. I beat the game, sure. But I was dumb. It wasn’t until I sparked up Majora’s Mask and Tatl popped up to yell at me that I realized that 1) the Z button did something and 2) I could use it to make the game easier.
and I’m glad you pointed out the importance of Navi — sure, she’s annoying like nails on a chalkboard . . . and her comments are about as useful as anything Saria had to say but Z-targeting . . . man did that make a difference when I played through a 2nd time.
I know she was useful as a targeting system, I just wanted her to SHUT. UP.
yaaaay! someone who doesn’t hate Navi! :D,
You are also someone who doesn’t hate navi? I really am not alone then!
I never quite understood what made Navi so annoying for some people. I find the sword spirit of Skyward Sword much more annoying when she’s telling me about my diminished hearts all the time.
lol. I find the skyward sword annoying in the way she tells you what just happened thirty seconds ago.
Pfft. Not like I needed her to Z-Target.
I did that on my own. All she did was hover obnoxiously around whatever I was targetting. It was so much easier in Windwaker without her.
And even in Majora’s Mask, Tatl was a total shebro.
Death to Navi!
If you don’t have Navi you can’t target a la Ganon fight.
Yeah, but why would you ever need to target when you have a sword twice the length of your body? Aiming shmaming.
Though really, I never had any problems with Navi. I just like to join the festive hatred. Tatl was still better though.
You can’t get the Biggoron sword until like halfway through the game anyway.
Halfway? You can get it before you set foot in the Forest Temple, but you do have to go save King Zora before you get it (that ice cavern isn’t very hard anyway) and have the hookshot to get rid of the Skullwalltulas on Death Mountain.
Bonus to that is if you get your respective tunics while you’re there and stop by the volcano to get the Bolero of Fire, you can go straight from the Forest Temple to the Fire Temple to the Water Temple without having to do any inbetweeney stuff. And everything dies so fast with that beastly blade.
To be fair, I think Z-targetting only worked because he was trying to hit Navi
Challenge accepted. As soon as I get another working TV, I’ll play OOT with only 3 hearts and without L (Z) targeting. I’ll admit, I’m worried about the Morpha fight.
I’m sorry, but as a large Zelda fan there’s just too many weird errors going on in the comic for me to fully enjoy it.
Link only needs a partner in Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask to Z-Target, and even then, Z-Targeting is not used for locking on to torches or hookshot targets because there’s actually nothing difficult about shooting torches. There’s also a Wind Waker Moblin in there who seems to be REALLY lost.
I’ll admit that within the Ocarina of Time universe this makes sense and you’re still a genius at drawing expressions. But to say Navi was uh-mazing just because she was linked to Z-Targeting is just plain wrong. Navi had almost no personality, she would never let you do sidequests in peace and quiet and I never felt like I really needed her as much as I need Fi in Skyward Sword at the moment.
See the nice thing about having a whole menagerie of games to work with is that I can pick and choose what I want to draw at will. I can take Twilight princess Ganondorf, give him Wind Waker Ganondorf’s hair and stick him in Ocarina of Time Ganondorf’s armour if it so pleases me! I can make Ocarina Link fight a Wind Waker moblin for the sole reason that they’re my two favourites to draw! If your status as a “large Zelda fan” makes that impossible “for you to fully enjoy”, that’s more your problem than mine.
Gotta love it when people take their fandoms too seriously to enjoy them. :’3
Naturally. Just sayin’ your editing lacks continuity.
Perhaps your continuity needs editing. /guy who hasn’t played a Zelda game since the 90s
And not one single crap was given that day.
Yeah I came back from 4.5 years in the future to apologize, I was a dungwad little nerd.
My only real complaint is that she picks the worst times to remind you, i.e. whenever you’re trying to zoom in. Even if they had just put the command to listen to her advice on a different button, I wouldn’t have minded. I think they did better gameplay-wise with Tatl, though she was a bit rude.
I almost never use Navi unless it’s a tough boss fight….
i never had a problem with navi’s Hey listen. however, i did not like that my mom picked up saying it like her at random times. also i noticed in OOT 3D that they added new little gems to what navi said. something to the effect of you should take a break.
i do find Fi to be annoying. for the majority of the beginning of the game she would always chime in with something useful or necessary. but then when i hit the earth temple she started saying stupid things like in the middle of a battle she chimed in so i listened to her thinking it would be a good hint for this fight. instead she was just telling me my health was low and i should work on that. then another time i was digging around and she chimed again only to tell me my wallet was full. at least navi said useful things… instead of Fi’s no shit Shurlock.
So I hear in the new game, Link’s sword is sentient. I bet THAT’S no end of fun.
I know these comics are suppossed to satirize machismo but defending Navi for the annoying c**t she is, is waaay over the line… ummm… (?)feministic?… cuz you know… she’s a girl… or something… and because men refuse to ask for directions… and stuff like that… please don’t hurt me…
not even a little feministic mate, she’s useful as hell and most people judge her unfairly.
Picture this: You are naked in a room full of chairs and you have a gigantic blister on your butt. Now imagine these chairs are sprayed with deadly skin-absorbed poison. In the latest case the blister might increase your chance of survival, since you’ll avoid sitting, but it still remains a pain in the ass.
Maybe it’s because I played it when I was only a wee youngin’, but I always liked Navi. I REALLY liked her.
Or maybe because I always thought of her as a female character, which helped me identify with her more? I don’t know.
But I never thought of her as annoying until I saw stuff about her online.
Actually, when I was about 8 I beet the game without Z targeting (Didn’t really know how >.>)
….. I–how do you even.. I can’t understand how you came to that conclusion, I mean… What?
Put me in the Navi haters camp here. Just wouldn’t shut the hell up, and would want to talk and say the most inane things. I got annoyed with Z targeting after a while and used it as little as possible as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s possible to finish the game without it.
Really, the entire game has an awkward feel to it, as often happened to a lot of franchises that went polygonal in the N64/PS1/Saturn era. Navi was just the icing on top, if you will. I didn’t get past the Forest Temple, and never will.
I could never use Z-Target because I didn’t play OoT until recently because I did’t do Zelda when the N64 was out. Let me tell you, that game was not meant for emulators. It’s annoying as hell to do A N Y T H I N G. So I would try to Z-target but mostly just failed and then I was like “You know what? Fuck this. I’ll watch a Let’s Play.”
May I just say, I adore your backgrounds. And the little details, like the chunks of earth from all the OTHER times Link missed. and the facial expressions, and how you’ve got Navi’s… um… body, I guess, just right, and goodlord the backgrounds. It like they’re straight out of the game.
Not gonna comment on the Navi thing, but I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s had trouble with the SS controls. It’s not even my first game on the Wii, and I still had to look up how to equip my shield online because I couldn’t figure out how to do it on my own. So thank you, for making me feel better about myself.
As a Zelda fan, I’d say that it’s almost like the joke was missed…
Anyhow, Navi wasn’t *that* annoying. Sure the constant “Hey, Listen!” stuff was annoying, but honestly, it wasn’t enough to ruin the game. I love this interpretation of Link. Asshole link needs to be canon XD
I think he is dear, he’s only appeared in two canon comics (fan made don’t count, sorry guys.) and he was a dick in both.

That’s actually kinda adorable.
Can I have more info on this? I’d love to read it.
She WAS annoying as all hell… she was just a necessary evil.
inb4ninjadbymiles
It wouldn’t have been so bad if there had been, you know, a meaningful delay between getting bugged about doing stuff.
It was also annoying because LoZ is very much a game about exploring and finding stuff and continuously getting nagged while trying to collect the gold skulltulas is really aggravating.
I was going to say that is curious if Link can be qualified as manly. But then i noticed, something…
A navi joke, that is original and funny. My mind is blown.
Navi never really bothered me.
Links accuracy only improved with her targeting because he aims to hit her so she shuts up.
Really, the helper character in every 3D Zelda is only there so that Link and the player can “participate” in the story when he’s basically mute and will agree to do anything for anyone without a word. I can imagine that the dead, soulless world that has aged so poorly on the N64 would have felt a good deal more lifeless if you didn’t have a companion who talks and acknowledges what you’re doing every once in a while.
I never thought of Link as being his own character. Back when I played games like OoT, banjo kazooie, space station silicon valley and diddy king racing (8-12 years old) I role played, the character was me. Everything was personal. Navi was the soft voice that would pull me out of my thoughts while playing.
I wish I could still get so emotionally attached to video games. It was such a better experience then what happens now.
Maybe alcohol and diablo 3 will allow me to feel it again
I didn’t realize Navi was annoying until I visited the internet. I thought she was handy and I liked having descriptions of the villains. I was 11 and crappy at playing video games. IDK
I love your characterization of Link as a bit of a doucher. lol
XP I still think of Link as being racist thief ever since his first appearence in this comic.
i like how the moblin is the one from windwaker, lol.
anybody else caught that?
to me, navi was a mixed blessing, the annoying reminder was, well, annoying, but she did prove to be vital. plus, she was nicer than tatl. tatl was just a whiny pixie fag who was only nice to her bf or bro or wutever he is. but navi is complained at too much, after all she did help link save the world, she deserves more credit.
And this is why you don’t piss off help fairies. Or fairies of any type.
You know what’s a pain in the ass, that talking canoe.
There…there was a targeting system? ._.
I generally tried to not use Navi when I played OoT, preferring to aim the items manually, even in battle. I always considered it me telling my friends who were watching “Yea, that’s right, I’m better than you because I don’t need targeting to hit them with the bow. Suck on that.”
I love how you draw Link. :D So cute!
I used Z-targeting all the time as a kid (It was kind of a major game mechanic and made wrestling with the fucking awful N64 bananarang less of a chore). There was a lot of shit you couldn’t actually use if you didn’t z-target, wasn’t there? Like you’d have to be right next to someone to talk to them if you weren’t targeting them. I tuned Navi out most of the time, and her chiming in never really bothered me all that much. Hell, I actually LIKED her. I felt really bad when she got knocked out of the Ganon fight, and when she came back it was actually kind of a fuck yeah moment to me.
Maybe I just wasn’t a very vindictive kid. I dunno.
I actually love Navi. The saddest thing for me was when she leaves you at the end of OoT.
About Skyward, I totally agree with you on that Zelda-Statue-Falling scene… it IS horrible.
But I actually like how the “gimmick” controls play out. I really do. That’s actually my favorite thing.
But the thing that got me thinking was your “Quidditch” complaint… I know I screwed in it because of the control scheme… but I also remember that that was the same way I used to screw when I started to use a stick to play a spaceship or whatever (actually I still screw even with the stick). So, isn’t it just a sign that we are getting used to a new control scheme. Because for me a FPS with two sticks is a devil’s work while the rest of the world got used to it a decade ago.
PS: I also think the “lip” thing is interesting and looks good : P .
Last panel reminds me of Kate Beaton
WHAAAAAT
WHAT
SOMEONE AGREES WITH ME THAT NAVI IS USEFUL?
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
Eh, thanks to the crooked cartridge trick, I’ve beaten OoT multiple times without getting the Kokiri sword and I never use the lock on whilst doing it, it’s not that hard really….
darn it all the way to the water temple I wasted so much time reading all of the comments AGAIN!
Challenge retroactively accepted as of like 8 years ago, on account of 12 year old me being real dumb. challenge completed as of 6 years ago.
Navi + Midna = Tatl
Funny thing.
I used to practice sniping the two fire keese in the entrance to the Fire Temple in OOT. A torch was nothing.
Also? Don’t try using ice arrows on fire keese. Just turns them into ice keese.
;_; I’m sending a link (hah) of this to my little sister, who I thought was the only person on the planet who appreciated Navi. You have made my day.
I rarely if ever Z Target
So there
Can you “Necro” a web-comic? O.o! Anywho, I generally play games with “Lock On” without, unless that’s impossible. And the only place in Ocarina I caved was Bongo Bongo… Eff that Guy. ;P
Actually, Link CAN target enemies by himself. Ever play Twilight Princess? He can target enemies in his human form without a helper.
Greate pieces. Keep writing such kind of info on
your blog. Im really impressed by your blog.
Hello there, You’ve done a fantastic job. I will certainly digg it and individually recommend to my friends. I am confident they will be benefited from this web site.
All jokes aside, you can implement a targeting system without involving unnecessary “helper” characters. The two concepts can exist independently.
I have always liked all the companions in The Legend of Zelda series, and Navi is hands down my 2nd favorite companion in the entire series. FYI, Midna is my personal favorite. #TwilightPrincessHDHype
