Well, I just laughed out in glee. Wonderful work on expressive Mr. Fish, and the first panel does an amazing job conveying the chaotic battle conditions.
Damnit, now I can’t wait for next week.

Now we’ll never know.
I have to say, this particular sequence made me want to see a slightly different sequence: Scooping them up, then using Hyper Beam instead of chewing his food or spitting it out.
Which promptly made me wonder why the games never gave mechanical bonuses for such brilliant freestyle combos… :’D
Actually, it does with certain moves. For instance, using roll-out, after using defense curl gives you pretty much an instant crit.
And Discharge, after using Charge :D

Actually, Defense Curl simply doubles the power of rollout for as long as the pokémon that used it remains out. It’s a tag. If [it has defense curled] then [rollout deals double damage]. But rollout starts out with a power of only 10, so that doesn’t really “instant crit” (actual critical hits have additional effects).
Furthermore, Charge doubles the power of ANY electric move used directly after it, not just discharge. They simply have matching names.
GEEZ you GUYS.
Actually, roll out’s starting power is 20. This means defense curl turns it into 40-80-160-320-640 (I think). Pretty insane.
Combine with +accu lens or something for massive lulz. Flying / fire / ice / bug gyms won’t know what hit ’em.
Guess I wasn’t the only guy who figured out you can ROFLstomp over half of Johto with a pissed-off Geodude.

Well, how about Rain Dance/Thunder to ensure that Thunder doesn’t miss. Or Sunny Day/Solar Beam so you don’t have to waste a turn charging up the attack. Or Sunny Day/Morning Sun to completely heal HP.
That works with sunny day/moonlight too. As the sunny day move in japan actually just means clear skies.
I’m predicting a horrified reaction by Jared, or a skyward NO!
Horrified reaction? This is going to be awesome above and beyond any pokemon ability ever.
Jared was happy when his head-smacky fish turned into a giant seamonster. Now that giant seamonster forgot how to shake, but learned how to channel the power of a distant unholy star through his mouth? That would cheer up any trainer ever.
Well, I’m sure Jared worked REALLY HARD to teach Mr. Fish to shake.

I gotta admit, I had not thought of that. Pretty clever.

My mom has taught all of her dogs that “shake” means “shake the water out of your coat,” so I assumed Mr. Fish shakes in that sense. Causing a small earthquake in the process.
But Gyrados can’t learn Earthquake…
He doesn’t have to know the move Earthquake to start one.

your out of moves the Pokemon uses it’s reflexes. Are you surprised that the Pokemon Jared used to whack other Pokemon with has head butt as a reflective move.
On that note I’m glad “Don’t eat wasn’t taken off the list. Seems important.
“Don’t Eat” is actually the secret to Jared’s success with Mr. Fish. He’s trained Mr. Fish to the point that he defaults to a normal attack, he actually has to use a command to get him to NOT attack something. Hence Mr. Fish’s ability to chomp and squish goons without Jared telling him too.
“Don’t eat Jared” is the full name. Equally important, but and for a second I thought the punchline was going to be him forgetting it.
The move is actually “Don’t Eat Jared”. It’s two lines.
I always read that as “>don’t eat” and “>fetch Jared”…
I could see Jared training his sea monster to come get him if he gets into trouble…
I think “Don’t Eat Jared” is important to Mr. Fish’s success anyway. I think “Don’t Eat Jared” is shorthand for “Eat Everything BUT Jared”, thus explaining many, many scenes involving Mr. Fish eating things that are generally frowned upon for Pokemon to eat. Like Pikachus.
I’m pretty sure it was don’t eat [thing/name here] and fetch Jared.
See he has a move called don’t eat which by logical conclusion means that if tha move is not used he will eat them by instinct
the move is “don’t eat jared” not “don’t eat” pretty important one to keep.
I unknowingly taught my dog the wrong action for “shake”. See, upon command, he will not hold out his paw as if initiating a hand shake. He will literally shake his body from snout to tail. This was mainly for the purpose of not having to wipe him down after he took a swim or got wet. It had the extra effect of being rather funny to randomly tell him to shake. Because of this, I imagine Mr. Fishes shake is something like that.

epic, adjective definition 2. Heroic or grand in scale or character.
Epic was used incorrectly as a noun there, I would have been forgiving if it had been saying to prepare for something epic, not just prepare for epic. I do believe this is a dollar in the jar situation.
The use of the “dangling adjective” as above is in fact an acceptable construction, as implicitly understood to imply a truncation. Whether or not the OP understood this is up for grabs however.
Also, this post is off the edge of the box and I can’t see what I’m typing, what’s up with that?

Hi there, long-time reader, first-time poster here. Just wanted to say that I’ve been a huge fan ever since I started reading MGDMT over a year ago.
That said… Shit’s gonna get real here, now that Mr Fish has Hyper Beam in its arsenal. On that note, I wonder what a Pokemon game would be like if there were actually moves like “Roll Over” etc.
No comments like “First!” from me, but I am surprised that you got this week’s comic up surprisingly early.
I cannot wait to see how everybody reacts to the docile, silly Mr. Fish gaining a level in badass and blasting Hyper Beam like a boss after only having kinda useless moves like Roll Over. On the other note, it’s rather frightening… hopefully Mr. Fish doesn’t get too careless with his newly acquired skill.
This comic is one of the finest I have found on the internet, and I cannot even express my delight for this early comic enough.
(And on the Pokémon game with moves like “Roll Over”, that made me imagine a poke-agility game with Mr. Fish rolling over the props… cute.)
I would imagine that in a Pokemon battle, using “Roll Over” would go something like this:
MR FISH USED ROLL OVER
MR FISH ROLLED OVER [your trainer name]
[your trainer name] FAINTED
~Game Over~
In fact, I would say that “Roll Over”, “Shake”, “Don’t Eat [your trainer name]” and “Fetch” would all end up with a bad end, and the only way to level up Mr Fish in battles is to keep switching him in and out.

I think the best part of this is yet to come; Mr. Fishy-fish (Believe I’m quoting Jared here, not sure) is about to use hyper beam, yes, and mercilessly slaughter a large group of Rainbots, yes. But what happens when he falls asleep after firing his laser?

Jared didn’t tell him not to eat the pokemon in the park. He was too busy arguing with the girl in charge.
That’s why I said it was like a buffet. Jared probably used Don’t Eat off panel once he realized this.

Me too. I figured “Fetch Jared” was how Jared gets rides, and “Don’t Eat” is a command Jared to give to keep Mr. Fish from eating stuff that Jared would rather not have eaten. Works either way, to me.
I wonder, does Mr. Fish have the ability Intimidate or Moxie? Gyarados can gain either one in GenV now, and if he has Moxie then the more Rainbots he kills, the stronger he gets.

I don’t think it can be Intimidate because everyone just kind of ignores him. And since Moxie’s a Hidden Ability, Jared must have inadvertently hacked Mr. Fish with all the pre-evolution bludgeoning.
There’s an ability that does that now? I feel bad for the guy that messes with me when I get generation 5! Watch me eventually get an already-great pokemon with that ability. Perhaps Rayquaza or something if possible. Or a really weak one like a Magikarp that I can use to give me a reason to laugh in the enemy’s face when I win with it. XD

I guess you can expect to see a lot of comments about Gyara for games that aren’t Gen 1, but that seems to be what Pokemon generation Jared is playing. So he probably doesn’t have an ability, and Hyper Beam is actually good (and physical as well)!

before the introduction of giga impact, hyper beam was a phisical move you know? :S
Sadly, Hyper Beam isn’t very good for Gyarados any more. However, I’m pretty sure Mr. Fish operates on 3rd gen or older rules, which would make Hyper Beam pretty fantastic.
I get this feeling Mr. Fish is looking around because it’s as though a voice is calling those text blocks out and he’s looking for the voice. Also, is anyone else afraid he’s going to miss or it’s going to be pathetic?

It’s about time I commented on this comic again. I must say, Mr. Fish is the leading authority on bashing his own face in just to crush the remains of his enemies. Who else thinks that would look undeniably funny? XD Also, I like how Mr. Fish seems confused about the words at first, and then he sees them, chooses what to get rid of while making a derp/me gusta face, and then suddenly looks like he’s about to explode but doesn’t care. XD

This does make me wonder two things… One, how did he learn to shake, as he has no arms, or limps of any kind? Two, will he hyper beam Jarid next time he asks for “shake”?

grumpynormal face.I’ve loved Mr. Fish as a character since he was introduced. His dour-but-obliging relationship with Jared has been awesome, and this strip continues that trend. We’ve got the attacking-with-his-face that is the primary attack Mr. Fish has been ‘trained’ with. :D We’ve got Mr. Fish having ‘Don’t eat Jared’ as one of his four tricks, which says a whole lot about that relationship. And now we’ve got 100% pure awesome in the form of eager, squee’ing Jared as trainer to Mr. Fish, force of utter hyper-beaming devastation. If that doesn’t earn Jared some ‘manly’ points, nothing will. ^.^

Mr. Fish’s expressions! Oh my Lord, this is hilarious.
I know, I this is the most emotion we’ve seen in any given strip of Mr. Fish.

The fourth panel cracked me up so much. I can just picture Mr. Fish using his face to flatten his enemies over and over. I have not laughed this hard since you showed Jared swinging Mr. Fish like a bat!

The last time we saw Mr. Fish “Shaking Hands” was in strip 420.
“Roll Over” occupies the same spot as “Splash” would, so it is either splash or whatever move Jared used in strip 150.
“Don’t Eat” is Mr. Fish’s understanding of the pokemon move “Bite.” “Bite, but Don’t Eat.”
The last move is either “Fetch” or “Fetch Jared,” but it wouldn’t make sense for Jared to teach him to do that, unless “Fetch Jared” was Mr. Fish’s understanding of “Help, Get Me Out Of This Wacky Situation!” Still, if I had a pet fish, one of the first things I would teach it is how to fetch coins at the bottom of fountains and stuff. That would teach it the basics of “swim to this spot” needed to master pokemon moves like “Surf.”

Looks like you followed one suggestion Can’t wait to mine! (kid Icarus Uprising characters in the comic) who wouldn’t want to see those characters in here, most of them are badass particularly Magnus and Dark Pit who with me.
This demands a photo in sepia of Jared taking a photo of Mr. Fish doing SHAKE in front of a bunch of scared Jigglypuff and other cutesy PKMN fauna.

I kept reading the movelist as “Don’t eat” and “Fetch Jared”, haha. I love the expressions throughout the comic. And how Mr. Fish just slams on the enemy like he did as a magikarp.

D’aww… That’s actually kind of adorable: He had the option to forget Not Eating Jared, but chose not to.
Mr. Fish was using Headbutt over and over before leveling up, despite not knowing Headbutt.
Oh well, I take pleasure in seeing him smash his face into the ground over and over, just like Ed does so well.
Just came across this today & read it from beginning to present. This is the most awesome comic I have come across in awhile. Only bad thing is, now I’m caught up with my reading and have to get my fix in one little page a week. :(

He rolls over, of course!
At some point Jared will die and Mr. Fish’s tears of sorrow will bring about the Care Bares. Mr. Fish will promptly eat the care bares and the joy of them being gone will bring Jared back to life.
Or he’ll be zombie. Whatever.
Words cannot describe how awesome it is to watch Mr. Fish chew ’em up and spit ’em out, and then bash them with his face repeatedly.
I have a feeling we’re about to see Jared’s glee face taken to a whole notha level…

Absolutely. My first assumption was the facial expressions were basically him going “da fuck is this”. And then derp, he forgot.
The brilliance here is that to forget a move Mr. Fish first gives himself the “blunt force head trauma” that was mentioned in an earlier comic.
In my day the skies darkened and hopes were dashed when hyper beam was launched, the cataclysmic roar crushed even the strongest of wills.
Now all I want to do is see the results of Mr. Fish using Roll Over.

I was just playing Full Throttle for the first time in probably… lets say 9 years, and realised how much Ben is like the Commander! Awesome.
I seriously love that game but not enough people know it… and ot was released the year I was born hehe

I can picture Jared riding Mr. Fish to glory, while Mr. Fish lazers everything in sight. The Commander will be so proud.

Really, no one wants to see Kid Icarus: Uprising characters?…………. thats kind of saddening, and rather dissapointing… not one person wants to see those characters?
Hey, could we get a Mr. Fish Expression pack? Cause I love his expressions more than just about anything.
It’s those awkward moment I realize Jared takes such a good care of Mr. Fish, Mr. Fish might have absolutelly maxed EV/IV, I realize 255 EV on everything is technically impossible(“techinically” because you can always hack your way to it), but wouldn’t be the first time Jered completelly ignored the game mechanics…
Also, if the fact Jered lives in a secret base is any indication, Jered is a 3rd Gen trainer, which means Hyper Beam is still a Physical move, and given a Gyarados epic *pays one dollar* base Attack AND the fact Gyarados learns Hyper Beam on lvl 55 in Gen III… I don’t know who it will hit, but it will hurt… a lot…
The worst part about this, of course, is it only has 5 PP.
I’m surprised no one noticed that yet.
I guess “Don’t eat” really would be on that list. And it gets, what, 5 PP?
