I only know what these things are after reading the Bulbapedia article (I’ve never played a Pokémon game) – but it occurs to me: Mr. Fish has eaten all kinds of Pokémon. Their essence is now his. I can’t even imagine the consequences of what’s going on here.
Really? I, unlike Bryan Elliott, have played a Pokemon game, and thought it was the most boring thing I’d ever played. Like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest — a hugely boring game-on-rails with a similar elemental enemy system — and grafting on the most tedious parts of Final Fantasy VI and VII (which is to say Rage and Lore collecting in VI and pretty much everything to do with chocobos in VII). I’ve always been mystified at how people more than two years younger than me are almost uniformly googly-eyed over the series.
That said, I still think these comics are hilarious.
Yes, a fan faux-dramatically suggesting a favored game to someone who enjoys a comic featuring some inspiration from it but who has no experience with the game either good or bad is clearly cause to openly and unapologetically bash that fan’s game of choice.
Just because you find elemental-energy type-matchup style games boring does not change the fact that such games remain popular with the audience at large, and it is massively condescending to be “mystified” that people have different tastes than you. I cannot stand first person shooters in any shape or form, and no matter how different fans can tell you that they are, every last one of them feels exactly the same to me. But that doesn’t change the fact that they are one of the biggest gaming markets, and it doesn’t mean anyone has bad taste or make me wonder how people can enjoy them.
People just have different tastes, and that doesn’t make anyone’s any better or worse than anyone else’s. There’s no need to follow-up a suggestion to try a game with tales of your personal distaste for it; everyone is already very aware that not everyone enjoys every game. Really, there’s no need for the suggestion for such a popular series either, technically, but at least that’s encouraging and positive rather than discouraging and negative.
TL;DR: “If you don’t have something nice to say…” :P
You’re overreacting, and appear to have either misread what I wrote or else got so defensive that you were unable to parse statements properly.
It’s perfectly legitimate to be mystified by other people having tastes opposite to yours. If you could understand why they had those tastes, you would share them. What is inappropriate is assuming that those other people are inferior because of those tastes, and you’ll notice that I didn’t do that. I’m mystified that people enjoy eating curry, too, but that’s okay — I can just eat something else.
Uh, no….you wouldn’t share a person’s tastes if you knew why they had them. I understand why people like games such as Call of Duty, but that doesn’t change the fact that I myself can’t stand them.
You can only have 1 pokemon Mega-Evo’d at a time during battle, but as long as they hold their respective Mega Stone, you can use their Mega Evolution as much as you want.
yet he can still “fly” since he can still participate in sky battleds… thats something that has been bugging me. Hawlucha can fly but cannot participate in sky battles, yet Gyarados cannot fly but can participate, it makes my head hurt a little.
The real logic behind this is actually really disappointing: the Pokemon that are eligible for Sky Battles are those that can be at least vaguely justified as floating or flying that are already animated as doing such. So any Pokemon that stands on the ground, like Hawlucha or Pidgey or Fletchling, are banned from Sky Battles for the sole purpose of saving the animators from having to make a separate flying model for it.
Not exactly–they don’t have to be flying type, they just have to be capable of flight or levitation. Basically, any pokemon that doesn’t touch the ground in a regular battle is eligible for a sky battle.
Why am I picturing hiccups and hyperbeams now? And then, when most dramatically appropriate sometime down the road, a totally awesmazing new form for Mr. Fish?
No, no, you misunderstand: /Mega/ Evolution isn’t normal evolution. In the Generation VI games (X and Y), when certain Pokémon hold their respective Mega Stone they Mega Evolve: they take on a more powerful form for the duration of the battle. Gyrados is one of the Pokémon capable of this.
While aetherGaze is trying to explain that it wouldn’t BE an “evolution”. It’s more like going Super Saiyan. You power up and look slightly different, then go back to normal. You’re still normal the vast majority of the time, meaning Mr. Fish would still be Mr. Fish as we know and love him. It would just be with the addition of his optional power-up mode.
To be honest, I’ve never cared for the name “Mega Evolution”. When the first one was revealed, there was something going around about Mewtwo’s “awakened form”, and I really hoped when Mega Evolution at large was announced that it would get dubbed into Awakened Forms and we’d get such things as “Awakened Mewtwo” and “Awakened Gyarados” as opposed to “Mega Mewtwo” etc. Mega-Name just feels very cheesy– though the designs are typically cool enough that it’s hard to care TOO much what they call it, heh.
Not that his parents don’t deserve it but how can they not notice something like that? I mean I’m a heavy sleeper myself but I’m pretty sure if a Gyarados came and started trashing my house I’d wake up real fast. LOL
Actually, EV raising items are basically just what they’re called. A bit more extreme, but that’s what they are. Now, Battle Items (X attack etc, Guard Spec and Dire Hit), THOSE are like steroids. They only last one match each.
I’m no expert, but my understanding of anabolic steroids is that using them while training speeds up muscle growth. They don’t magically make you stronger if taken right before/during a competition.
Well. Um. I’m not really sure how that would work. I mean Jared needs the bracelet thing to resonate the stones, but I suppose if Mr. Fish ate that he could just sort of… poof? Anytime he wanted to?
I intended to ask the same question.
Ignoring what eating all those stones will cause to Mr. Fish, Lysandre didn’t care to include the Mega Ring? Guess he assumed Jared is so good that he doesn’t need Mega Ring.
Yeah, I had a cat like that. Everything was divided into food and not-food. And every so often she would have to check to see if something had moved from the not-food to the food category.
Let’s be as creative as possible about the consequences of consuming massive quantities of mega stones.
He’s gonna grow ARMS! Mr. Fish will look like Trogdor.
It’s apparent that Mr. Fish is about 5-8 times larger than an average Gyarados.
A normal sized Gyarados(game) is about 6’5 as is a mega evolved one.
Assuming that Mr. Fish is at least 5 times larger than an average Gyarados, that would make him 32’5 and 2590.5 lbs… The longest Pokemon in the games is Wailord at 14.5 and the heaviest is Groudon at 2094.4 lbs.
That would make Mr. Fish the largest Pokemon in existence to date.
Going by game standards, Mr. Fish is probably the longest and heaviest Pokemon to have ever existed making him legendary in his own right.
Now imagine the largest Pokemon to ever exist mega evolve. While a mega Gyarados is the same height as a normal one, their weight is about 672.4. It is still scary to think what all those mega stones will do to him.
I bet Mr. Fish will be as majestic as fuck though. Same blank look on his face and majestic as fuck.
I’d find it amusing if we see the Mega Stones in future comics in the background. As paperweights, keeping doors open, as impromptu weapons, night-lights, pet rocks.. just anything aside from their intended use.
As nobody understands what the hell they do or what they’re for, least of all Jared.
If any of these stones that aren’t garydosnite affect him, somehow, I’m looking forward to seeing what ampharosnite, gardeviornite, and abomnasnownite do to him, at once. Then again, it might turn out like the big bloated ultimate form of that pretty boy person that Mr. Fish hyperbeamed.
Not applicable here but let’s play with it Xkcd tangent style.
Mega is an actual metric measurement at 10 to the 6th. Now if there’s 600+ stones there (13 long X7 up X7 deep as estimate for 637) that moves it to 10 to the 6X637=3822 oi. Not counting any evolutionary features you’ll have a midgard serpent on your hands at the least.
Oh lord, I love the nordic myths and legends. I can juist see Mr. Fish getting that big and Jared is gonna get all big and teary eyed again like he did here during The ballad of the laser fish
And then say some thing to the effect of “I didn’t know he was a GIANT WINGED laser fish”
I don’t know whats gonna happen on the page, but I think I wanna be on a different continent than Mr. Fishy right now. Any where but japan at least, japan doesn’t have such a good track record when it comes to giant reptiles.
There is one thing Mr. Fish will not eat. At least as long as Mr. Fish still knows “Don’t Eat Jared” – however if he ever forgets that move to learn a new one, all bets are off.
We can only hope that his evolution into Mega Mr. Fish(provided he doesn’t go PokeZerg) is a permanent thing because that would be amazing! And with all of those Mega Stones…
Please for the love of god tell me that Mr. Fish will permanently evolve in to mega gyarados. I want to see everyone’s reactions to it, from the Commander to Kratos.
Mr Fish will evolve into its Mega form for all of one second, right before shedding its body and evolving into an incorporeal form of pure, undiluted manliness that’s so manly. This, in turn, will cause the MGDMT universe to start imploding due to the excess manliness, forcing Commander Badass to embark on another *inserts $2 into the epic jar* journey in search of a means to contain (not destroy) the manliness, some of which will be used to revive Mr Fish’s body.
Obelix can’t drink those potions, too much would have his own super strength rip apart his bones and muscles, this is an explicit plot point in the narrative.
Huh, we reading the same Asterix comics? I took it Getafix was more concerned with Obelix getting too strong and being a clumsy menace to society. He does imbibe some potion in ‘Asterix & Cleopatra’, the whole joke being that after all the build up Obelix simply feels nothing.
“Rip apart his bones and muscles”? Maybe I haven’t read Asterix and the Legend of the Demon Womb yet…
Well, after following this comic for a while, it finally got me to post, just so you know how much I laughed with it.
I seriously hope mr Fish stays permanently in his mega evolved form, or at least gains the ability to evolve to it at will, rather than only during battle. I actually like the mega evolution design and would have no problem with making it a perment one, except that lots of people wouldn’t know it. Gyarados has been a staple since the 1st game, after all, while lots of people dont even know megaevolutions exist now
Bah, that horrible moment when you realize you could have said something else. Sorry for the double post.
Why not make Mr Fish’ move list… LONGER after all those megastones? It would be representative of his new awesome power for all those who know the games, without needing to change his appearance!
Now, you’ve done it. Mr.Fishy will achieve conscience and join the Olympus as a semi-god. He will hold enlighted tournaments with Kratos in which myriads of Pokémon will battle to death for the glory of the gods.
Nah, just kiddin’. You had me rolling on the floor with Mr.Fishy stoically chomping away at the Megaballs.
I have no idea how what Mega Stones are, but that image of Mr Fish eating them is hilarious. I’ve been arguing with idiots all day so I needed a little humour, thanks!
I’m curious as to what is going to happen to Mr. Fish now…
I supremely hope that he gets all huge and immune to electricity.
Evolve… No, scratch that. REVOLVE into a Mega Gyarados Mr.Fish!! XD
How awesome is that?
Mega Laserfish
Super Mega Flying Serpent With Lasers
Mr. Mega HYDRA Laserfish = many heads = many lasers !
Mega Laserfish –> Mega Mega Laser!
(If anyone gets this reference, I am impressed. Took a lot of grinding.)
with Jared and Mr. Fish any thing is possible (i’m guessing for some kind of Mr. Mutalisc Fish)
lets spell “overpowered” and “extreme overkill”
There is no overkill. Only “fire” and “reload”.
There is no such thing as overkill precisely because there IS such a thing as underkill.
No, that’s not from Schlock Mercenary. I made it up myself.
I only know what these things are after reading the Bulbapedia article (I’ve never played a Pokémon game) – but it occurs to me: Mr. Fish has eaten all kinds of Pokémon. Their essence is now his. I can’t even imagine the consequences of what’s going on here.
Mr. Fish is Zerg! And has kidney stones!
ZERG kidney stones
They will evolve O_O
Mr. Fish was Abathur’s greatest creation. Spun many strands, powerful essence, efficient.
This reference, I get it.
Absorbs essence. Grows stronger. Evolves further.
Exponential growth potential. Beyond biological constraints. Must add lasers.
He already has lasers!
He needs MORE lasers. He only has the one!
MOAR LASERS!
… is the name of a track by edIT of the Glitch Mob fame ;p
I think the only real consequence here will be the trouble Mr Fish will have with his next bowel movement.
Well, is there still hope that Mega Evolution will happen at some point?
I kind of hope he becomes permanent mega evolved but part of me would hate to see Mr. Fish change at all.
hyper evolved poo?
…Is he going to give birth to Muks?
Not a situation you want to hear “prepare for trouble, make it double” in…
“I’ve never played a pokemon game”
That sounds like a serious problem that you need to work on, immediately.

story is 3/4s of the game
its the story we love more then the gameplay grinding stuff
It…it has a story, past, you know, CATCH EVERYTHING! STOP EVIL ORGANIZATION OF THE WEEK! CATCH MORE THINGS?
What if the only food in the world was curry? Would you eat it assuming that it contained nothing you were allergic to?
Uh, no….you wouldn’t share a person’s tastes if you knew why they had them. I understand why people like games such as Call of Duty, but that doesn’t change the fact that I myself can’t stand them.
I thought it was if you don’t have something nice to say then say something really nasty. I guess I know what I was doing wrong the whole time now.
The concept of not saying anything if you have nothing nice to say is inherently flawed, removing criticism just festers stagnation.
Huh… I can’t imagine this going into terrible, hilarious places
Watch Mr. Fish end up having a mega evolution whenever he feels like it now rather than once per stone.
Mr. Fish does what Mr. Fish pleases.
pretty sure the stones dont get used up when you use them in game…
He’ll get an octuple mega evolution, with about 6 heads and 18 wings
ONE WINGED ANGEL FISH?!?
That’s Mr. One Winged Angel Fish.
Mr Fish, devourer of worlds
And I am become Mr. Fish, Destroyer of Worlds.
Now we are all sons of Mr. Fishes…
I wish to point out that that fin does indeed resemble a single wing…
http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131116112850/pokemon/images/7/71/Mega_Gyarados.png
Holy crap they don’t? I thought they were like fire stones etc. one shot wonders! I need to start mega evolving every match O.o
You can only have 1 pokemon Mega-Evo’d at a time during battle, but as long as they hold their respective Mega Stone, you can use their Mega Evolution as much as you want.
Hm didn’t know that. Neat.
Wait, you’ve played through the game, thinking they were a one-use item? Wow.. You need to get on that. Now.
I can see Jared getting the Pokébel Peace Prize next year and being completely befuddled the whole time.
Kind of like Obama…
Maybe Mr Fish will just randomly mutate now?
I want to see mega Mr Fish drawn now.
Oh god, imagine the Alakazamnite, or whatever. He’s going to be smart, psychic, and strong. He’ll be hell to take down.
This made me laugh out loud.
(And I don’t even play pokemon, much less know what those stones are.)
Mega stones in pokemon make them evolve into a mega form version of themselves i can link u Mr. Fishes one if u want :D
Please do!
I’m not LittlePink0ne, but this is Mega Gyarados:
http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131116112850/pokemon/images/7/71/Mega_Gyarados.png
A FLYING Mr Fish?!?! All the other Pokemon just had something blue and scaley (and slightly fishy smelling) fly over their graves
Actually, he loses the ability to fly and becomes weak to bugs.
Actually, he turns into a dark type. He loses the flying type on Mega-Evolution.
yet he can still “fly” since he can still participate in sky battleds… thats something that has been bugging me. Hawlucha can fly but cannot participate in sky battles, yet Gyarados cannot fly but can participate, it makes my head hurt a little.
Dude. Pokelogic. Enough said.
Besides what EssGee said, there’s the fact that you go into the battle with a Flying type, which THEN Mega Evolves.
Not exactly–they don’t have to be flying type, they just have to be capable of flight or levitation. Basically, any pokemon that doesn’t touch the ground in a regular battle is eligible for a sky battle.
Oops! All berries.
At least Mr. Fish will get REALLY healthy
Why am I picturing hiccups and hyperbeams now? And then, when most dramatically appropriate sometime down the road, a totally awesmazing new form for Mr. Fish?
*hic*
*PEW*
*hic*
*PEW*
*hic*
*PEW*
*hic*
*PEW*
HA!
Eventually he’ll run out of PP, though, right?
…right??
**cowers**
Mr. Fish has plenty of Laser Breath even without having hiccups. Probably be more practical to hope that he runs out of hiccups first.
Maybe he’ll megaevolve ala-legendary super saiyan.
It’s over.
To those saying Mr. Fish might evolve: I’m sorry, but it just doesn’t get any better than a Gyarados.
I think he means you just can’t top a gyarados like Mr.Fish with such flimsy things as ‘evolutions’, no matter their size.
Now I want him to Mega-evolve and trash Jared’s parent’s house while everyone sleeps.
Not that his parents don’t deserve it but how can they not notice something like that? I mean I’m a heavy sleeper myself but I’m pretty sure if a Gyarados came and started trashing my house I’d wake up real fast. LOL
Serves them right, after disowning him for having “4x weakness to Electric”.
Forgive my ignorance, but aren’t mega stones basically poke-steroids?
No, Pokerus is pokemon steroids.
No, Rare Candy is Pokemon Steroids.
Pokerus is more like the flu, where instead of a fever, you get superpowers. EV raising items, like HP-up and PP-Max are more steroid-like
Actually, EV raising items are basically just what they’re called.
Friendship is pokemon steroids.
Mega stones are more like “my other final form”. Think Freeza, especially since Mewtwo totally does it, too.
In fact, Mega Mewtwo X is kinda like Frieza’s second form.
Meanwhile Mega Mewtwo Y is what Majin Buu would look like if he ate final form Frieza.
Well.
Mega rings are made of mega stones.
This is going someplace extraordinarily awesome, I can feel it.
This is the beginning of an evolution caused by a gyarados swallowing too many mega stones into a new dragon type.
This is going to be like Tera Gyarados, or even Exa or Yotta Gyarados
Yah know we won’t get a Mega Mr. Fish, we’d get an ULTRA MISTER FISH.
It’s funny how Jared gets a whole dumpster of them.
Apparently Mr. Fish eats the content of any dumpster instantly and instinctively, even if it’s not edible…
Which explains a lot about his menu.
With Mr Fish, everything is edible, even if it normally isn’t
Yeah, I had a cat like that. Everything was divided into food and not-food. And every so often she would have to check to see if something had moved from the not-food to the food category.
“Its diet consists of fruits, plants, small woodland animals, large woodland animals, woodlands, fruit groves, fruit farmers, and small cities.”
It’s funny. I knew I recognized that description when I saw it, and though the card looks brutal and all…it’s not that impressive.
I have seen and approved of your Magic: The Gathering reference.
The Enormous Báloth? I loved that one!
HAHAHAHA THE COMMENTS ARE THE FUNNIEST PART OF THIS!!!!!! The comic is great but it gets better when you read the comments!!!
You all rock!!!
Let’s be as creative as possible about the consequences of consuming massive quantities of mega stones.
He’s gonna grow ARMS! Mr. Fish will look like Trogdor.
http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/comic/double-brettbow-all-the-way
The prophecy…it’s coming true!
Holy fucking shit.
This is going to be… I don’t even know, but I can’t wait to see this.
It’s apparent that Mr. Fish is about 5-8 times larger than an average Gyarados.

I bet Mr. Fish will be as majestic as fuck though. Same blank look on his face and majestic as fuck.
Just pointing out that scaling something 5x doesn’t make it 5x heavier (I think that’s what you’re doing, right?), it makes it 125x heavier.
Oh god… with all those mega stones being consumed, is he gonna perma-evolve? *crosses fingers* o -o
I’ve read the final panel at least six times now, and I still laugh out loud at it. Kudos!
I’d find it amusing if we see the Mega Stones in future comics in the background. As paperweights, keeping doors open, as impromptu weapons, night-lights, pet rocks.. just anything aside from their intended use.
As nobody understands what the hell they do or what they’re for, least of all Jared.
That would be magical and hilarious.
… Huh. I guess we can add “the countless souls of slain pokemon” to Mr. Fish’s diet.
If any of these stones that aren’t garydosnite affect him, somehow, I’m looking forward to seeing what ampharosnite, gardeviornite, and abomnasnownite do to him, at once. Then again, it might turn out like the big bloated ultimate form of that pretty boy person that Mr. Fish hyperbeamed.
ampharosnite will give the power of fabulous 80’s hair bands.
Not applicable here but let’s play with it Xkcd tangent style.

For Scale.
Ack. Seeing the Commander like that again, even just for a back link, was a bit jarring. Sorry, that’s hopefully just me, though.
*Your invaluable contribution
I wonder what Lysandre thinks he’s going to accomplish by giving Jared those, considering Jared doesn’t have a Mega Ring.
this is going to make mr fish transform into a permanent giant supercharged gyarados.
I hope this doesn’t end in a mega-gastroenteritis for the poor fellah, or that he doesn’t transform into a glowing blue Raiju from Pacific Rim :P
I don’t know whats gonna happen on the page, but I think I wanna be on a different continent than Mr. Fishy right now. Any where but japan at least, japan doesn’t have such a good track record when it comes to giant reptiles.
And then Mr Fish turned into a living hyperbeam shaped like a Gyrados.
Is there nothing Mr. Fish will not eat? I am uncertain but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say there isn’t.
Jared. Think that’s about it.
There is one thing Mr. Fish will not eat. At least as long as Mr. Fish still knows “Don’t Eat Jared” – however if he ever forgets that move to learn a new one, all bets are off.
Mr. Fish does not eat Jared.
I’d assume British food would be on that list.
Fortunately, he didn’t forget “Don’t eat”.
http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/comic/the-one-youve-all-been-waiting-for
Lysander’s faith in Jared’s understanding amazes me. He only sees what he wants to see doesn’t he?
An insane megalomaniac who only sees what he wants? How unusual! :P
We can only hope that his evolution into Mega Mr. Fish(provided he doesn’t go PokeZerg) is a permanent thing because that would be amazing! And with all of those Mega Stones…
Why do I see a Galactus scenario here?
He’s a good nemesis, he understands the power of a protagonist.
C’mon now, Mister Fish. You know better than that.
Mega Stones are a sometimes food.
Please for the love of god tell me that Mr. Fish will permanently evolve in to mega gyarados. I want to see everyone’s reactions to it, from the Commander to Kratos.
Is it me, or does he actually look older than his first appearance? Maybe it’s just close ups that make it seem that way?
This cannot possibly end well for anyone…
Can’t wait till nest week!
First “dumb” thing he’s done in the whole arc. I still count him as a genius among his peers.
You know, this is how I always figured that Held Items worked anyway. I just never want to find out how you take them back.
On a related note, is Mr. Fish going to Mega Evolve? Because I see all kinds of awesome, horrible things that can happen if he does.
Apotheosis of Gyarados. Needs merging. Gyaradeosis? maybe. Apotheyarados? better.
I imagine the texture like eating ice but hotter…?
Anyone else agree? Hurts my teeth to think about.
Imagine this is the equivalent of Obelix downing a potion, no real effect on Mr. Fish’s perpetual awesomeness… just a little roughage.
In one story Obelix drinks a whole pot of potion. He turns into stone for a few days. So no point in trying to guess.
No Keystone. No worries. Uh. No more worries then usual.
There’s a term for mistaking a moron for an eccentric genius, but for the life of me, I can’t think of it.
I’m gonna go with faith. Misplaced faith if you wanna be technical
I believe the term is “an election.”
I imagine Mr Fish would be able to Mega-Evolve an unlimited number of times during combat.
…I wonder if this means Jared’s parents will finally be proud of him.
(Sorry if this was already brought up in a previous comment, too many to read.)
What does he eat next? Dragon Balls?
Also he will clearly evolute from Mister Fish into Lord Fish
Nah, too fancy. Mr. Fish is a simple fish…dragon…thing….yeah…
Ahem,
Ya’ll crazy.
That’s all.
I guess you could say Mr. Fish….ROCKS!
I have no idea how what Mega Stones are, but that image of Mr Fish eating them is hilarious. I’ve been arguing with idiots all day so I needed a little humour, thanks!
Jared looks older. Perhaps it’s his random encounter with facial hair. I don’t know
I’m now imagining Mr. Fish fighting massive kaiju monsters, a la Ultraman/sentai…
Am I the only who thinks he’ll develop an addiction to Mega-Stones? I mean, just look at the way he’s chomping at them now!
As of Pokemon Omega Ruby/Pokemon Alpha Sapphire Delta Episode, eating Mega Stones to gain a Mega Evolution confirmed by Ray Quaza.
Sad thing is, I think this is sort of how Rayquaza Mega!s in ORAS.
Swallow the meteorite, Mega Evolves.
…Does this mean Mr. Fish will learn Dragon’s Ascent?
